Спасибо за урок, Настя! 😊👍 Can anyone help me with the grammar of this sentence from the short story please? "Когда она была маленькой...." What grammatical case is 'маленькой' here? According to Wiktionary it's either genitive, dative, instrumental or prepositional. I have been searching online for nearly an hour now, for suitable explanatory examples, including searching for variations of this sentence and searching Russian grammar pages for cases used when talking about size, age and time, but I can't find anything. I wonder if I am the first person in the history of mankind who wants to find out the answer to the above grammatical question. Surely not! 🤔 I also searched for information about answering the question 'when?' if talking about time, but that added to the confusion. I thought it might be connected to the use of 'года' later in the sentence, but that is in genitive case whereas the information I found suggested that 'год' is used in prepositional case, with the preposition 'в' (the article said 'в году' for prepositional case, but Wiktionary says 'годе' for prepositional case and that has created yet another layer of confusion that I can't even begin to explore at the moment). I trust that there is a suitable explanation somewhere in the universe, but it currently escapes me!

"Когда она была маленькой.” Маленькой is in instrumental case. After быть, стать, and some other verbs Russian uses the instrumental case. For example, Мой отец был врачом. Я хочу быть журналистом. Раньше я был умным. Я надеюсь, что я стану богатым. --------------------------------------------------------- The case of a noun depends on the preceding number. After 1 we use the nominative singular, after 2, 3, and 4 the genitive singular, and from 5 to 20 the genitive plural. For example, Вот 1 стакан. (nominative singular) Вот 3 стакана. (genitive singular) Вот 11 стаканов. (genitive plural) Similarly, Моей дочке один год. (nominative singular) Моей дочке 2/3/4 года. (genitive singular) Моей дочке 5/6/7/8/19 лет. (genitive plural)

@@rc1982 I think it's a rule. That's what I found: " verbs быть and стать in the past and future tenses are normally used with the Instrumental case. However, in everyday speech they can be used with the Nominative case (only adjectives and participles). When the quality is permanent, the Nominative case can be used, when it is something transient, the Instrumental case has to be used."
