I love answering your questions, but I have responded to the same few questions probably a few hundred times, so I will pin my answers to those here. Why Tennis balls? This sport is called table tennis in some parts of the world and I misspoke. You can call it what you like, I’m tired or arguing semantics. Why can’t she keep the eggs? These aren’t her eggs, she nest in the communal lay box and every day my other hens lay in her box. I take them away because I have to sell them. Why can’t she hatch chicks? She can’t hatch any chicks because it is too dangerous from predator attacks at my coop to let her safely have chicks. The predators are ravens. Why do I have to take the balls away? I want her to stop being broody, and taking away all eggs and egg like objects is important for this. I just give her these balls to better understand her behaviour. Why don’t I break her brood? She has been broody 4 times this year, and I didn’t know of an effective treatment for her at the time. I have since broken her brood and she is happy and normal again. I am more than happy to answer any questions you have and would love to hear your thoughts and ideas about Peanut here. Have a good day. 🐔❤️ (Edit) I edit this comment periodically when people have questions I didn’t properly answer and need to clarify.

As someone who has only seen a chicken once in their life because that was a meanie butt who charged and tore up my knee when I was 7, you should absolutely take away her eggs so she forgets about them in one day and make her not so angry so someday when a 7 year old is walking by, she doesn’t decide to circle and attack them and break the cycle

You should just expand the coop or build another. If she's that desperate to be a mom you should at least let 1 egg hatch. It's so sad that she's trying so hard.

Something to try would be removing nesting materials. Hens don't particularly care about nests unless they're broody, and not having a nest can break broods. Alternatively I've also stuck an ice pack under a hen. When she's broody her abdomen warms up, so cooling that down also has an effect. Not recommended for cold weather, but it's actually enjoyed in the summer.
@stephanienoire18928 ай бұрын
I know way too much about broody hens considering I've never been responsible for any chickens. Except one hen whom we babysat for a couple days. And now thinking on it, it's weird they just had the one hen. Thinking further it's probably because her other pet hens were eaten by coyotes. They didn't have a guard dog or anything. It's kind of morbid!

With hens, you should just remove the eggs regardless. Hens will generally stop eating when broody and if you don't have a Rooster to fertilise them, they could be broody for days, even weeks. Removing the eggs breaks the cycle quicker. I don't know why anyone would replace the eggs with something else.
@nuclearcatbaby11318 ай бұрын
Do you eat the super mini cockatiel and finch eggs?
@mylifewithmarmalade46248 ай бұрын
Some clarification on this from a former vet tech: The goal of “dummy eggs” is to stop the bird laying. Stopping them laying reduces egg binding risk. It is excessive laying which predisposes birds to egg binding. The more they lay the more they deplete the minerals needed for strong shells, the more inflammation builds up in the reproductive tract, and the more they exhaust the muscles involved in laying. At some point you will get an egg that gets stuck because it’s too soft, too rough, or too mis-shappen to be expelled, or because the bird has too much internal damage to be able to lay even a perfectly fine egg. If you see egg binding develop after introducing dummy eggs that’s a good sign that they were introduced after the bird had already been laying too long, or was not in good condition to be laying in the first place. The dummy eggs didn’t cause the egg binding. They simply weren’t able to stop laying before the egg binding occurred.
@mylifewithmarmalade46248 ай бұрын
@@adamg4336with chickens you wouldn’t. The whole goal is to get more eggs. Dummy eggs are used in exotic birds because they haven’t been bred for hundreds of years to be able to lay almost constantly. If exotics start laying and can’t “complete” the expected clutch size, they will keep laying once they start, and they are then at huge risk for egg binding and other severe health problems. So dummy eggs are used to complete the clutch, turn them broody, and therefore stop the laying and hit the reset. Most exotics will still take breaks to eat while brooding and in many species both parents share incubation responsibilities. So brooding is less risky for them than continued laying.

Give her some of her eggs back so she doesn’t feel like such a failure of a mother for the rest of her life.
@JosephsDesign9 ай бұрын
I have to collect her eggs every day because I sell them. I cannot let her hatch any eggs this year because of predators, but I let her hatch last year and will let her hatch again next year when it’s safer.

@@JosephsDesign I wasn’t trying to be an ass btw, i was more saying it in a humorous manor because you gave her the balls lol

Its all good, I always try to interpret things as questions or jokes before insults. Life’s a lot better when you do that. She is a great mother and looks so happy when she has chicks to protect, but as I said, now is a bad time for that.

I have a hen who has gone broody 4 times this year. She is the best mom! I let her keep one or two chicks and rehome the others. The rooster is protective. He stays near her.

We put fake hard eggs in our nest . Usually found at tractor supply, or other farm shops . We also used hallow plastic Easter eggs , not the kind used for Easter hunts, but some other kind of eggs . We also used white golf balls .

I bought a pack of fake eggs to help direct them to a particular nest, and now everytime i take eggs from under a hen, i put a couple in front of her I get to watch her cutely tuck them under her, and she gets to sit on eggs. Win win
