Start A United States military occupation code, or a military occupational specialty code (MOS code), is a nine-character code used in the United States Army and United States Marine Corps to identify a specific job. In the United States Air Force, a system of Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) is used.

@@JustAnotherArmyVet I went through the 12B course in 2003. Not only did they teach us to find explosives, they also taught us how to diffuse them. Although the course may have changed. I dunno, I’ve been out since 2006.

So many lies were fed to this poor PFC. Where do I begin? 1st EOD is NOT Special Forces! We may train and work with them, but we are not considered Tier 2 or Tier 1 assets. I served from 2006-2019 as EOD, deployed to several countries, worked with Secret Service (VIP Missions) under 3 US President's, VP's, Presidential Candidates, and various heads of state including foreign dignitaries. I attained a Master Badge and various medals that honestly don't mean shit as they vary based on rank, not actual achievements, and anyone braggin' about x,y, or z usually doesn't desrve it. EOD are told your job translates into 3 letter agencies and they may but honestly it matters very little in the end because nothing we do transfers directly into these fields. Civilian EOD is trained by ex military EOD and even if you were a trainer for this course you are are still required to retake it as a requirement. This makes no sense but trust me it's true and I say this to emphasize the BS this PFC is talking about because he may not even be through EOD school EOD school is generally about 37-42 weeks but they add and take away from the course throughout the years. An example is WMD's and Nuclear training that has been required and taken away over the years. Most people take longer to get through school depending on wait lists to start or if you roll-out of class. You must achieve 85% or higher on each test and only get 2 opportunities. If you fail, you roll-out, you must go before a board to determine whether you will continue in the job field or you will be re-classed according to needs of the Army. This is a high stress but rewarding job. We used to receive higher pay than Special Forces, and that may still be true, I haven't checked. You get better equipment but Tier 1 & 2 get generally everything they ask for. A common reason people believe we are SF is that some SF fail there training and roll into this field and make it through. These people are a mix of good and bad dudes but only arrogant assholes refer to themselves as EOD. Yes I am aware of "Special" units such as those out of Bragg and 1 in Colorado, or WMD units and even test groups. I've worked with them all and lost many friends because they throw us EOD into a stack or drop us in the middle of a known enemy town at night. Let me be clear on this. WE ARE NOT DOOR KICKERS! We specialize in everything that goes BOOM. Throwing us into fake SF units is a matter of ego and it sucks because it's the #1 killer for us. Real SF units train every day for this work and we train a few weeks with them before deployments. I've had real close friends drink this kool aid before and think they are somehow above regular EOD. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND STUPID! With wars essentially slowed down to an almost complete stop, real experience has also suffered. Yes you may be deployed to "combat mission" but these are few and mild compared to the surge push from 2008-2012 time frame. I know this from experience. So in closing, we are specialized in Explosives but almost 95% who get out of EOD never do anything related or have our career history relate to our next job. This isn't because by choice, it's by demand. If you want to work with 3 letter agencies I recommend finding a way to be stationed at Fort Belvoir as it is practically in DC and they alone get opportunities thst no one else gets just on account of their location. But there are no guarantees and if I was a betting man this PFC is likely to work with the Park Ranger services not the real Rangers
