A day in my life (as an American) living abroad! I really serve to y'all the truth of what it's like being an American living in Europe (Germany). While Emily in Paris was cute and all, living abroad isn't always sunshine, rainbows, and hot French men. I show you guys my daily routine of going to the farmers market, dancing ballet, speaking German, and hanging out with my international friends. I hope you guys liked this video! lifehack for the grocery store: place things they have to weigh or put an extra number in at the register (like fresh vegetables, bread etc.) in between the rest of your stuff to slow them down and gain some time lol (grew up in germany and it still makes me so nervous every time there is a line behind me)

@@TristanSimpson When I lived in Germany as a young boy 45 years ago the German Cashiers at the Base Commisary and exchange could do all the adding up of your bills in their head as the punched the registers. I don’t think they were ever wrong. By the way Stuttgart was one of the places we were stationed when I was 3-5. Nice to see pictures of the city.

I really liked the end when you talked to people from other counties about how they view America and Americans. I think you should do a whole video like this, especially if you can bring in more people from different back grounds and maybe have them all discussing these topics. Would be so interesting to see where they conversation goes and how they all feel, individually and collectively, about us!

The part about the grocery shopping's trauma had me in tears 😂 I'm italian and I have experienced the EXACT same thing when I was living in Poland for some time. The rush. The stress. The looks. Omg finally someone said it

on the "die / das Mädchen" problem: "Mädchen" is actually a diminutive of "Magd" (maid) so originally it was "Mägdchen" but the Germans were lazy so they left out the "g" changing it to "Mädchen" . And in german all the diminutives have neutral pronouns so that's why it's "das Mädchen" But don't worry too much about articles, no one will judge you for it :))

Great explanation! I’m always lost by the German triple participle too when speaking but not in literature. If you confound them in writing, it makes no sense. I know it is a root for the “meaningless ‘do’,” which really is meaningless but essential for comprehension. Proper German is a beautiful language because of inflection that is either inconsistent or nonexistent in English.

It's "das Mädchen" because in German the grammatical gender has nothing to do with the sex 🤷🏻‍♀️ But your German sounds really cute and I love that you're at least trying to speak in the language of the country you live in. And German really is a difficult language, so don't worry ☺️ You're doing great!

I loved the grocery store anecdote XD I lived all over the world and the first time someone tried packing my groceries, I thought they were stealing. Everyone laughed so hard, big trauma.

Pro tip from a german potato: take a shopping cart with you and just throw everything in it as they scan, usually there are little tables or whatever at the exit where you can take your time putting your stuff in your bag 😅

I live in Poland and I usually go to the grocery store with an empty backpack, so as to be able to toss stuff into it super fast :)), but I am still struggling and a couple of times I even crashed a bottle and eggs by mistake while rushing to put stuff into my bags. I am glad to know that I am not alone in this :))..my tip is: buy fragile things separately and in shops which are slow-paced, possibly

Grocery stores issue is similar in the Netherlands ;) Tips: be prepared, it's a battle, place the heavy items first on the belt and delicate items last, have you bags ready and start putting in the items directly after they've been scanned. It's hard work keeping up though and I secretly think all cassiers love it when they are done with your items and you're only halfway!

I studied a year in Switzerland and I totally understand how you feel, I was so frustrated I studied german every single day for about 2 hours and spoke as much as I could with my host family to practice, having awful anxiety all the time because I knew I could make grammar or pronunciation mistakes. Learning german is an actual hell, viel Glück!

Going to Switzerland to learn German is hardcore. Even native speakers have trouble understanding Swiss German because it's incredibly different from any dialect you would hear in other German-speaking countries.

Last but not least, a relationship with a german acter. Only acters and Tagesschau-Sprecher have a realy good pronunciation 😂

Hehe. I am from Germany. The only time I visited a farmers market was when I was living in Orlando/FL :-) Regarding German nouns. It is rather clear in respect to human beings. But as soon as you go to animals it gets complicated. A cat is "die Katze" (feminin), a dog is "der Hund" (male). But if you want to make sure you talk about a male cat, it's "der Kater" and (female dog) "die Hündin". For inanimate objects, you can just learn them. There are basically no rules. Der Zug, die Straßenbahn, das Auto. And (I talked to other non native speakers), when learning them, always learn nouns with their article. Edit: Das Mädchen (the -chen is a diminutive form, like also "-lein" in Fräulein). They are seen as neutral. Like "das Kind", "das Baby". But no rule without exception, der Junge. Edit2: Try to get the z sharper. Think about the Tsetse Fly... so. Enough teaching. :-P

No Aldi in Tasmania but struck them in Western Australia last year for the first time and THOSE CHECKOUTS!! A tip for the grocery store. Take the basket or the cart when you enter the store. it is easier to put the stuff back during check out. after you pay you can leave the line and pack you bag on your own pace. i feel you

Ok😂 about the supermarkets Tristan, it’s the same as in Ireland but the stock is only replenished once a week and special items maybe once a month or every few months. Black beans and nutritional yeast is not popular or widely known here in « Europe » so the shops don’t sell it or see it as essential and about the till experience ... there is a certain system that we are used to where we have learned to pack very quickly and effectively or we fill our trolleys at the till and move to the packing bench to tidy our food into bags. It makes life so much easier!!

When I was in University, here in the US, my parents were in West Germany, in Konigstein close to Frankfurt. So I lived there for 2 summers and 2 winter holiday seasons. I only learned what we all called "grocery store German". Like you I could food shop, order in restaurants, basic social manners like good morning and thank you and happy birthday, but that was about it! But I made the most of traveling and enjoyed it all very much. Great video, it's fun to hear what other people think about Americans overseas!

about groceries: I've gotten accustomed to doing my own "packing" and have reached the point where I think I do it better than any of the grocery store clerks, but of course this is in Canada, not Germany. I always bring my own bags! I make sure I keep at least one in my car just in case I spontaneously end up at the grocery store.

ahahaha as a German I can confirm - shopping is stressful!! especially now in times of Corona, they have to wait for you to be finished and left the cashier point before they can start scanning the products of the next person

for black beans you should try and find a "unpackaged shop", they originally started in berlin (that one is called "original unverpackt"), but they should actually have one where you are. you can prettifying much always find beans there. in stuttgart the shop is called "Schüttgut"

I have the exact same experience in the grocery store. Since COVID you pack your own. They go so fast that if an item is on sale and they charge you the regular price you don't catch it unless you check the receipt after they are on to the next customer. BTW I live in NYC not Germany.

I've been living in Austria my whole life, and yes, I can conform that the grocery store experience is sooooo damn stressful. I start to shiver even when i'm just thinking about it. But i don't know it any different..😂

Hey Tristan. I come from Stuttgart and I think it's so cool that someone like you is walking around here in Stuttgart and is commenting on the proceedings and everything. I just think it's really interesting what you think about the city and the people. And just dare to speak German, some people here might not always be nice, but others (like me, when I stand in line behind you :)) are happy about it. I really like the view of you as an American citizen living in Germany, because sometime its really funny to hear your experiences in e.g. the grocerie Store. (especially If its a “normal“ thing for us(German citizens)/me)). And i wanted to say you are doing pretty good as an American struggling with the German prounanciation. Because especially as a non native speaker German is really difficult to learn ....🙄🤷🏾‍♀️so dont give Up🌸 Ach ja, wer kommt auch aus Deutschland ? (By the way, who is also from Germany?)

Lovely video!! As an Austrian who lived as an exchange student in Canada for a year I absolutely still remember how different it was from living at home. And it was so funny cause so many people there understood "Australia" instead of "Austria" when I told them where I am from and I was just like "well I really appreciate that you think my English is that good that you think I come from an English speaking country" haha Ah yeah and tip for the grocery store: I also hate the rush at the checkout, so I always take one of those baskets at the entry and then you can throw your stuff in there quickly, pay and then take your time with packing it after ;)

Love this video! 🧡 Especially because I´m german. And actually I don´t think that your german is that bad, it´s just weird hearing you speak german (I don´t know why). I´m studying to become a german teacher and let me tell you: It is a COMPLICATED language! 😂 The thing about the grocerie stores is true, I get anxiety every time. But ones you figured out a system, it´s ok 😅

Tip for the grocery store: put vegetables in between of the other things because the cashiers have to weight it so you have some more time to keep up :D

We have the same issue here in the UK, with German supermarket chain ALDI scanning groceries faster than we can pack them away. Some have evolved tactics to slow the cashier down. Personally, I just pile them back into the trolley then spend the next half hour at the back getting stuff packed efficiently for the journey home on the bus. LMAO.

YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD WITH THE GROCERY STORE CHECKOUT! I'm American but my boyfriend is German and lives in Munich so I go to Germany 3-4 times a year for long amounts of time. I kid you not my groceries be flyin' and I'm over here counting Euros to seem more German by not paying with card but they can see my lack of efficiency in bagging. Everybody be staring at me like "He's not one of us". :'( got me rollinnnnn

For like 6 months of COVID they wouldn't bag groceries here (NY). Packing bags quickly and correctly, light stuff on top of heavy and what not, is way harder than it looks! It's not weird for me now, but I also remember being surprised that you had to bring your own bags in Germany.

I agree with everyone about the grocery store stress at checkout. But while black beans may be a staple in California, the are not a staple in Germany, or in many parts of the USA. Many other beans are more common.

Ich komme aus den Niederlanden, und ich habe durch fernsehen deutsch gelernt. Die Mainzelmännchen waren meine Favoriten. Am meisten habe ich von Ihnen gelernt ; ) War ein Scherz 5 Jahre harte Arbeit auf Gymnasium und ich hab immer noch mühe mit die Sprache, aber verstehe fast alles.
