Overmountain Shelter was in danger of collapsing and was closed for several years. The decision was made to tear it down. It took us (TEHCC, Pisgah and Cherokee USFS) 4 days to tear it down and then at least one day to remove the remaining materials. This is the Day One video (1 of 3) of the deconstruction process.
It was sad to see this Hikers Icon being torn down but structurally it was badly leaning and several times it is obvious in the video. It was a well coordinated event and fortunately no serious injuries were sustained.
The Barn is gone but camping is still allowed in the vicinity. The privy is also still available.
