Daytona USA - Real Upright Arcade Cabinet Gameplay

Filmed at Four Quarters arcade in Bristol. Sadly, as mentioned in the video, the steering isn't right on this cabinet, just a small turn left of the wheel made the car do a really sharp left turn (you can see this where the smoke keeps coming off the tires every time I just try and straighten the car up - it feels overly sensitive, like it does if you try playing Daytona USA on Model 2 emulator with a pad rather than a wheel).

this game was awesome. then the PS1 came out and I got to play ridge racer at home. i thought that was just the craziest thing when i was a kid.

Ahhh, I KNOW I didn't make that up in my mind! Many years back in 2014, I went to an arcade joint in Singapore (I think it's still Timezone.. or some other chain but details!) with a friend. I didn't do particularly well, and I was stumped by how you are supposed to play this relatively well without a seat. I mean, I suppose you can only use one of your legs for either the brake or the accelerator, but it was certainly an experience to see an upright cabinet for a racing game.

Most people will only play the regular modes which are only a few laps.

Your camera did well to capture the CRT without too much banding or flickering. Also I'd imagine the force feedback on these is the same absolutely batshit crazy magnetic clutch as Sega Rally Championship.

Great stuff MT! Always a shame when the cab isn't quite working. I had that issue in the last arcade I went to with Sega's Luigi's Mansion arcade game (yup you read that right!)

I was about to say I had no idea there was a Luigi's Mansion arcade game, then my brain just kicked in and I remembered I actually uploaded a video of me playing it on my PC using Teknoparrot a few years ago. Derp.

@@MrThunderwing whilst I haven't played it (as it was broken) I have at least saw down in the cab with the full vacuum controller so I've had part of the experience I guess 😂

yeah that came from their peckham branch had that stand up for years, the gears sticks on 3rd gear sometimes :( those smaller wheel cabs feel like it understeers at first then oversteers, as they had a 1p segarally1 stand up cab also in their hackney bar.

i think it dont fully turns left, left side "locks" early, so when i would put my initials on the high score it couldnt reach left fully, wouldnt go to B :P

Ahhhh, interesting to hear the history behind it. Yeah, the steering's fucked on it - just a tiny turn left acts like you've turned fully to the left. You're constantly trying to over correct it.

the brake pedal can stick a bit also, a few times ive had to "lift" it with my foot!

I will resend Sega forever if I don't get its arcade racing compilation in my lifetime.What is it with copyright strike on background music? It's not like we're going to make black market copies out of it.

Yeah, KZfaq's content ID system is all kinds of bullshit. Some tossrag has somehow monetised one of the tunes from OutRun (Splashwave, what sounds like the SMS version) and has uploaded it with a different name. Now, if I upload an OutRun video with that tune it detected it as falsely belonging to this other channel that I then have to ask to drop the copyright on (which normally gets ignored and I have to wait for a month). It fucks me off so much!

I've always hated upright cabinets for driving games and i've always hated when a cab hasn't been maintained/serviced properly, so i'd have had a right old strop here

Ehhh, it's disappointing the steering and FFB weren't working, but, y'know, it is what it is. As a kid, I never really had an issue with upright cabinets, as I think the longest I was ever on one for was a few minutes. When I was playing that upright Scud Race cab recently (in another local retro arcade), that was in freeplay, my nearly 50 year old lower back and legs started grumbling after awhile.

@@MrThunderwing I got a flight back from Ibiza to Liverpool JL Airport about 15 years ago, had had an amazing time and to top it all off there was a Daytona machine near the exit! Except every cab was fucked and I sunk-cost wasted a quid on each one. I actually even filled in a complaint form before I got the taxi, pissed me right off, fucking thieves. If the machine is turned on, it should be working 😒 Eek, yeah, it might also be from my job, but I have a sneaking suspicion that my retro handhelds are giving me the beginnings of RSI...

Hrrm, y'know, that's a good point, each of these goes was actually costing me money. I ought to see if there's some way I can get some feedback to Four Quarters about it.
