Oooooh, *little addendum to something I said near the video start* I mentioned that Scud Race was the debut Model 3 game, what I should've said was it was the debut Model 3 *racer* - Virtua Fighter 3 was the actual first game on the system and came out a few months before Scud Race. Scud Race was the first Model 3 game I ever saw in an arcade, I didn't see a VF3 until _months_ later, so I'd just always assumed it came out after Scud...

I remember finally seeing Scud Race in Miami, in 2000, during our US family trip: absolutely gorgeous. I played it again when I found it in Santa Monica in 2012 or so, but I haven't found one in the arcade since then. I fired up the Supermodel emulator but I didn't spend enough time to set up the pad (or the steering wheel) accordingly... maybe for the best? Anyway, we need a full Sega Racing Universe reboot, with Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Sega Touring Car, ManxTT, and Scud Race with new graphics but similar (if not even better) handling.

Ciao Alessandro! Scud Race is definitely worth checking out. It's much better with a wheel, but I believe you can calibrate the X axis saturation if you're using a pad.

So ahead of it's time! It looks like a 6th gen game (PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox) game in the mid freaking 90s. Despite coming in 1996, it looks like it came out in 2002! Just incredible. I love this game!

Neither of this consoles could replicate this level of model 3 graphics. For the gc, the closest thing was amusement visions fzero gx. Although the graphics were solid, there was severe pop up in the backgrounds. For xbox, scud race's stages are included in outrun 2, and a lot of special effects from model 3 are missing. Dc and ps2 couldn't handle anything like that.

I forgot to say that of course it should had looked like a 6th gen game years earlier. It’s and arcade game! Those always was a generation or more ahead of the home versions. It’s actually just when we talk generation 7th like PS3 and XBOX 360 that the home version was on the same level as the arcade and then surpassing it. So about being ahead of time it’s more like that the arcade hardware was always 2-4 years before the home versions. It was arcades that pushed the hardware forward always up until the beginning of the 2000s

@@litjellyfish if you are talking for the scud race's stages in outrun, there are some video comparisons out there. You can check for yourself if you like. If I remember correctly, the backgrounds (in the outrun version) lost many details and shadows making them look plain.

Great video! 😃👍🏻 Massive "Thank you!!!" to the emulator developer, and all the people that helped with the Sega Model 3 emulator. Oh boy, it was 1997 when they brought a Scud Race single cabinet in my small home city in Bulgaria - Yambol. It was parked next to another great double cabinet of Cyber Cycles, which was my favourite motorcycle racing cabinet, which I managed to master and set the highest score. The Scud Race cabinet was mind blowing with these incredible graphics, and the force feedback. The screen size and visual effects were like nothing else I've seen until I saw two years later the Star Wars Pod Racer deluxe cabinet in Disney land Paris. Scud Race was super difficult and I don't remember seeing anyone completing a course in the arcade. Most of the people that tried it never managed to finish the time trial... It was the most difficult racing game, and I think the owner sold the machine a year later because no one was playing it after they realised how difficult it was. Today, I absolutely love playing it with the Supermodel 3 emulator. It's great to hook it up to modern-day high torque DD wheel, high end load cell pedals, and high end H shifter. The ffb can be customised to achieve a great feel, and it's even better than playing it in the Arcade. Our first attempt to emulate Scud Race was back in 2004-2005 in MAME if I remember correctly, but it was not playable with the hardware at that time... We never believed that it will be playable on a home PC... :) This game, and most of the others Sega Arcade racers will never age! They don't make games like this now, which is really sad and very nostalgic... Thank you for the awesome video! :)

Interesting video. I have a very similar relationship with Scud Race: I only ever saw it a few times when it came out as there weren't many large arcades where I lived. But I loved Sega and always held this game up in my mind over the years as a truly great racing game, never really knowing how well it played. Years later, when I was able to play it properly through supermodel on my sim rig, I was blown away by the difficulty. It's just really difficult to "get it" and be able to consistently take turns without oversteering, and once you sort of tame that aspect, you still have to "perfect" the technique to a degree to set any good times or even hope to come in 1st. I'll add that I don't know how anyone would be able to do well without a steering wheel in this one. Anyway, I really dug in after initially being so put off by the handling and after a while started to get the hang of it. I had a good laugh that you mentioned isamu, as I remember him from the old gaming-age forums from waaay back (pre neogaf, which was pre resetera), even chatted with him back then as we shared our love for the Sega and Namco racers. I've come around as well to Scud Race, and truly love it. I think it's best to just embrace the game as it is and appreciate the fact that Sega made a game they clearly intended to be for experts. I'll be enjoying this game for years to come. If I could just whip around the corners as easy as other racing games of the era (actually of the modern era too), this game would only have its graphics to hold it up. As a side note, I think Sega Touring Car is even harder, I just cannot do anything in that game. Also, I always wonder how the controls compare to the og when emulating racing games using a wheel. Scud Race is hard enough that I wondered if the controls were not right, but that is not the case. Shockingly, I also recently ran into a Super GT cabinet (and it was a deluxe motion cab to boot), and I spent quite a bit of time on it. I found that if you properly set your steering wheel to 270 degrees it will match the og controls 1:1. Not that that's news or anything, but I was happy to verify for myself. Btw, it's probably been 2 decades since the last time I saw one in the wild, and it was in decent condition too. The motion hydraulics worked, the force feedback steering worked, the only problem was the brake pedal was really hard to activate, though it still worked. It was so cool finding that cabinet.

I completely agree with you here regarding the handling and difficulty of the game. I’m lucky enough to live in Tokyo and know of two locations where there are two-player Scud Race cabinets (Gigo Akihabara / Mikado Takadanobaba). Growing up in England I only ever saw Scud Race in the flesh once and spent most of my time looking at screenshots in magazines. Having spent a lot of time playing it in Japan, I have to say that while it has all the Sega visual flair, it just doesn’t have that Sega arcade feel when it comes to the handling. It doesn’t feel as intuitive or as fun as Sega Rally or Daytona, and much like you said, you just have to accept the game on its own terms when it comes to the unique handling. I feel the elusiveness of the cabinet boosted my expectations sadly.

Your summary of the handling and why it can cause such a turn off for players new to the game cannot be overstated. Good to see you doing well Bart. Same gamerG from the forums. I haven’t been on there in a while. But I did have a netplay question. For an emulator that’s complex as supermodel3, do you think net code rollback is possible similar to how fightcade netplay works? I think if that’s possible people could actually play netplay over the web with that. I’m super curious to how the Daytona ps3 x360 ports got this to work on those ports.

Scud Race's handling has always done my head in. After playing it in the arcades and then getting a proper wheel set up, I'm now able to practice more often. I still can't seem to consistently get the cars to do what I want them to. It does get discouraging and usually find myself going back to Daytona USA 2 which is a lot more fun. I should add that the Supermodel emulator is a work of genius and a huge THANK YOU to Bart. Model 3 games have never looked so good, higher resolutions and widescreen support brings them up to modern standards.

Great video mate and a very honest opinion at the end. I think this game was designed to eat coins when you consider the cost of the board, the focus on multiplayer and the sky high difficulty in hitting first. There's always something about 'Final Laps', which is why I like to call it the "F*ck Up Lap". Happens to me quite often as well on SEGA Racing Classic 2 when I'm wanting to try improve my times, like, you do so well until the Final Lap where something just always has to occur to throw away all that effort of doing so well where you almost managed to finally get a better/improved time, like a massive middle finger to us. Even during a race, if a car you overlap isn't there to get in the way/block you (because it crashed somewhere), then either the wall or grass will have you instead, or end up spinning out. So frustrating, good job I love those games so much to keep coming back for more, still enjoy and have fun on them despite when they misbehave.

I always thought SEGA Racing Classic is an awful name, it makes me cringe and devalue the game every time I see it. I even told SEGA this directly. SEGA Sportscars Championship, SEGA GT Challenge, SEGA GT Championship, SEGA World GT Challenge, and World GT Championship, SEGA World Race Series and World GT for Scud Race are superior names. Greatr video and it's fantastic seeing Bart for he deserves all the praise in the world for he did what SEGA could not (it was thanks to Supermodel that helped SEGA figure out out their can make their own emulator). I think Scud Race is a better game than you think for I love it and can handle the parts that you found difficult, but definitely agree that it's a third wheel to Daytona 2 and Sega Rally 2, and the sixth wheel to Daytona 1, Daytona 2, Sega Rally 1, Sega Rally 2 and Outrun 2.

Here I sit hearing you gush about the grafics and keep waiting for you to point out the brilliant gameplay. You had my hopes up at 25:40. But we have vastly differing oppinions on that. Yes SCUD race is hard, but it is one of the most brilliant arcade racers, with only Rage Racer as possible contender with a different concept. Accelero drift is analogue, so don't "pump" the gas, be careful with it and kick the car out when exiting thecorner. I don't know of any arcade racer that used such an intricate and brilliantly responsive system where it matters if you're 1/2s, 3/4ths or 7/8ths on the gas. Sure, I loved the looks back in the day and was lucky to be two weeks in Great Britain where they had a 4 player arcade station. I ditched my friends and played every day. Wasn't good for my dating life, but these memories from 1998 still live with me. I agree with the rubberbanding and the high difficulty, but going time trial and driving is an experience like no other. There are no arcade racers like these. It was the peak of depth in arcade racers (specially since I don't know of any arcade racer that doesn't have boost or nitro after Radge Racer V) I played on Supermodel for quite some time, but I was blown away when I found out that I could use my wheel with a config file last year even with force feedback (Warped Polygon worked out the configs and made them available on github). It brought back a beloved racing experience that is still unmatched today. What Bart brought back to life can't be described in words. I'll always be thankful for that, specially since SEGA & Namco completely lost that kind of game. They really pushed each other to unknown heights in game design and I can't stress how lucky I feel to have lived through that era. Yeah the grafics where breath taking back in the day, but to me, the gameplay really hooked me to this particular game. And I loved the sound of the McLaren F1 GTR, it's so addictive.

@@MrThunderwing Oh. I didn't mean gushing in a shallow way, your reasoning is sound & well researched. I didn't mean that your description was too much, graphics were breathtaking, I agree on that part. To me the graphics were the entry point that catches you, while the gameplay keeps you. To me the gameplay needs time to be appreciated as it's unique. But it is the better part of those two elements of the game. I was more heart-broken that you didn't like the gameplay as much, but we agree on the gorgeous graphics and the tremendous achievement it was.

What a cool video! You described my feeling for this game. Feeling of admiration in the past, going through years with the game in mind and heart until you can play it at home and see that it is actually frustrating in terms of gameplay. A true machine of anger and disappointment. But I saw that I was wrong after I stopped playing this game with the Logitech steering wheel and the FFB plugin. You need to continue the search for the perfect feeling that this game really provides and you will only achieve this if you have a better quality steering wheel working with the Supermodel's native FFB. The game will remain difficult but much more fun and exciting, as it really is in its entirety. I've seen several of your videos in which you play with a Logitech steering wheel. I recommend that you purchase a Thrustmaster T300, and if you do, I will teach you how to make it perfect for Scud Race, changing just one detail in the steering wheel settings. Strong hug.

@@SuperHBecker Nah, it's fine. I just think at nearly 50 I've started to finally outgrow them a bit. I still love a lot of retro stuff and will happily play it (just yesterday, I was in a retro arcade playing on a Deluxe OutRun and feeling like I was 10 years old again), but I'm pretty much done with modern consoles and modern games. I almost nowadays enjoy more reading and watching documentaries on old games (and making documentaries on them myself) than actually playing them.

@@MrThunderwing On July 17th I will be 45 years old. We are more or less the same age and have the same opinion about games. I can't like new games, nor even admire them like I still do with old ones. What I still play from time to time is just SFRush The Rock and Sega Super GT (I prefer to call it that than Scud Race). I like to turn on my linked cabinets and watch a little, see things working and remember my adolescence where I wanted to have those games so much. I rarely had the money to play a chip. I also watch articles about these games. I enjoy doing all this much more than actually playing. Congratulations on your videos. Everything very well done, well edited, well explained and well argued.

My all time fave arcade sega racer apart from outrun had a least 3 scud machines in the past , wish i still had one but the model 3 tech is very unpredictable now and failing all the time getting on for 30 years old , id love a home port of scud daytona 2 and other model 2/3 games on a current gen system , but nothing will beat that arcade cab experience

Most likely a licensing issue with the real cars to be fair. If Sony already had exclusive rights to the cars in home videogames Sega hands would have been tied or have to pay Sony for the rights.

@@MrThunderwing you're welcome. I must say that this game was way ahead of its time and this game is about the same age as me. I first played this game at a theme park in Oklahoma City named Frontier City back in 2004. I remember seeing another SEGA arcade racer, SEGA Rally Championship too. That's the only time I've played SEGA Super GT in the arcade and I haven't seen an existing cabinet since. I really miss those days. I'm happy that Bart and other contributors made Supermodel happen❤️

Sure, I don't mind people using segments of gameplay from my videos, just as long as you're not uploading the entire video wholesale. If I ever use bits of other people's videos in one of my videos I always put an on-screen acknowledgement of where it came from and a link to the original video in my video's description - I'd always ask that anyone using my gameplay returns the favour.

My understanding was this wasn't heading to Saturn but Dreamcast. Sega had it running and it was used as a tech demo to show off the hardware at trade shows behind closed doors. For whatever reason they never followed through with a commercial conversion which is a crying shame
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 2 ай бұрын
It was never scudrace in any form. It was just a tech demo to show off some rendering. Basically they had taken the level of scudrace and the textures and converted it to Dreamcast format. Without any lighting so just flat textured polygons. And you could just steer the camera around. So basically just a mesh / object viewer. Nothing more

@@litjellyfish Rumour has it that it was on the agenda. Assuming it didn't happen due to expiration of licences or poor global performance of the arcade game in comparison to Daytona and Sega Rally ( that the DC did get )

@@robsmall6466 well I can debunk those rumors. Of course when we saw this level in the included demos in the dev kit we asked if it was the start of a port. And the answer was “no it’s just to test rendering - we needed some decent looking nodes with more real word design so we took it from scud racer as it was quick to do so” But yeah of course the bad performance could had affected it
