A proper analysis is key when comparing different noises to analyze which one is louder. But what is the best analysis for this acoustic test application?
In this tutorial we introduce two different analyses:
• Sound pressure level dB(A)
• Loudness sone
We compare the performance with respect to the following aspects:
• Scaling 01:20
• Frequency Weighting (A B C D) 03:43
• Time Response 08:25
• Masking Effect 12:04
• Frequency Resolution 12:30
• Level of detail 15:31
• Time Resolution 17:21
• Overall Summation 20:29
All analyses are presented wihtin the acoustic analysis software ArtemiS SUITE, which offers these flexible options.
German version:
• Schalldruckpegel dB(A)...

Wow, this was a great explanation! I’ve been researching devices measures in sones instead of decibels, but don’t have any previous experience with sones… which lead me here. Thanks for such a relatable explanation using real examples and data!

Thank you for your feedback. There are also devices that can do both and calculate the sone and decibel values for each measurement. We show such a device, for example, from the second half of this tutorial on calculating decibel values. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arKRq72Wx86bgqM.html Both loud noise and low-noise microphones can be connected here to correctly evaluate every kind of noises in decibels or sone.

Thank you Head, you provided excellent examples and a very good way to display the small sounds that can be annoying that we hear and yet cannot display in dB(A) measurements. Sones are best to display if the noise has components that could be heard by the human and be aggravating, especially useful for psychoacoustic analysis. I am really liking your videos and your software. Maybe one day I will be able to try out the Artemis Suite.

Thank you for your detailed feedback on our tutorials and analysis software. We are pleased to read how you have seen the advantages of advanced analysis over the more common sound pressure level and third octave analysis. On this channel you will find more recommendations for valuable analyses and quick evaluation of measurements. You might ask for a test version of ArtemiS SUITE. Enjoy!

rough dB to power factor scale: 1 = 1.25 2 = 1.6 3 = 2 6 = 4 9 = 8 10 = 10 20 = 100 30 = 1000 ... Quick ex: 17dB ~> 10 x 4 x 1.25 ~> 50 times

Test a gas stove at, e.g., five different powers. Record the acoustic signal and the sound pressure level [this latter will not be a precise value, but their ratios will be]. For the acoustic signal, you can use, e.g., the Spectroid or Spectrogram app (there are a lot of apps out there to do FFT on the microphone signal). For the sound pressure level, you can use, e.g., the Andro sensor app. Evaluate the measurement result

The same app on different smart phones leads to completly different values (level and spectrogram). Using an app on a smart phone will never lead to a calibrated value you can rely on.

Thank you for this very interessting an good way of explaining this topic. Two questions are still left in my mind: 1. Is there something like limit/value in sone which explains if a noise/tone is "okay" or "not okay"? 2. Is there a equivalent of loudness which ist somehow related to the dB(A)? It would be great to hear from you!
@HEADacousticsInternational
@HEADacousticsInternational 4 жыл бұрын
To your first question, no. It depends on the application: An air conditioner at night has a different limit than a sports car at full throttle. A sound is good if it meets human expectations. That's why I advocate loudness. It's not about energy. It's all about the human perception of sound.

OK, but if we want to measure continuous machinery noise to see if it causes ear damage, what do we use on our meter, A or C ?
@HEADacousticsInternational
@HEADacousticsInternational 2 жыл бұрын
Good day, you have already recognized this correctly. The averaged sound pressure level is used to assess possible hearing damage caused by sound. Which weighting - as dB(A) or db(C) - is regulated, for example in Germany, by the Noise and Occupational Health and Safety Ordinance. As also explained in the video, dB(C) values are used for high level peaks. For continuous exposure to sound, the ordinance prescribes dB(A). It is best to consult the noise protection ordinance of your country. We hope we could help you with this.

hello sir, what is excatly meant by AVERAGE in the sinusoidal sounds FFT plotting? Is the graph plotting Leq or you just meany by it : fundemtnal harmonic == average
@HEADacousticsInternational
@HEADacousticsInternational 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, to the different sinus tones we applied the standard analysis FFT( Average). So there is one averaged spectrum calculated for the whole time length. Alternatively, there are, for example, the analyses FFT (peak hold) - showing the highest level for each freqeuncy - or FFT vs time - showing the spectrum over time in a 3D-plot

@@HEADacousticsInternational thanks sir! Another question please: if i have an fft array of N input pressure values(sampling), is the array normalized and compensated by removing negative frequencies good for measuring LAeq? I have a determining end of year engineering project: I'm planing on calculating for each bin the corresponding Leq(LAeq by changing gain with application of values given by standards), and that's by supposing the ambiant sound consisting of N incoherent sinusoidal sound tones as you said(N number of samples), then summing the LAeq of different bins by the same formula used for summing of sound pressure levels from different sources.
