I've said it before and I'll say it again: Patty Jenkins was not the sole writer of WW84, the last time she wrote was the movie Monster. do you know who else wrote WW84? Geoff Johns (writer of Aquaman and Arrow) and Dave Callaham (writer of The Expendables series). Something tells me that Patty Jenkins was bringing the (limited) quality up.

I actually agree with Morrison that I like it when the Amazons have advanced technology and have changed from their Ancient Greek roots. While I did not like his books WW Earth One, I still agree with him on that. That's why I like Perez and Rucka's Amazons because they are connected to their roots, but they also developed philosophy and technology, but their aesthetic is still similar to their roots and the Amazons are a bunch of things: warriors, artists, poets, athletes, philosophers, scientists, etc. The Legend of Wonder Woman by Renae de Liz also did a good job with the Amazons.

I would be questionable on Grant Morrison's takes on WW. They're a great writer and yeah maybe some of the sillier things of the comics should have been moved to the movies like the purple light but they NEED to be careful about that as man would it really make the amazons seem like assholes if they have a cure-all for ALL illness that they could share. BUT they also wrote an elseworld story where Wonder Woman TOOK OVER THE EARTH AND THIS WAS MEANT TO BE A HAPPY END. Like no offense but no matter her creator's original intent, how you can accept a dictatorship as a happy end!

I finally broke down and watched WW84 so I could watch this video. Well, admittedly, I skimmed a bit. To me, the most unbelievable part of the second movie: she could pine (get it) over one guy for 70 freaking years. Good grief, woman. It certainly felt like a throwback to the camp of the 60s Batman series, but much less fun. Not sure I can forgive you for making me watch this movie, Leo.

She was affected by the Dream Stone. It happened when She said she wanted Steve back while holding the stone. Most people who watch the movie don't realise this. Look at what the Dream Stone did to Max and Barbara, it didn't just make them weak, it had psychological Effect on them. Diana realized what the Stone did to her after Maxwell Lord used it. Wonder woman then found out that the Dream Stone destroyed a entire civilization, that alone proves it's a very dangerous artifact. The Dream Stone kinda works like a Infinity Stone from Marvel Comics. Once the wish is made the changes the Stone makes are immediate and it corrupts people minds as well. Wonder woman was a victim of The Dream Stone, it wasn't her fault.

I actually liked 1984’s ending with Diana, at least. I liked how it showed that she did not need to be strong all of the time. She was resourceful by keeping her lasso attached to the villain while talking to the audience. She knew she couldn’t change her enemy’s mind but she knew she could convince as many civilians as possible and she did it in a sort of sneaky way because the villain did not realize she “changed the channel” so to speak and convince people that way. So she proved that if your physical strength fails you, at least you can fight with your voice and wit and that shouldn’t be a bad thing. I did not get that criticism of people hating the film because she did not punch punch stab stab. There is more than one way to fight. As for some of the writing choices, I can see that as an issue especially with the tigress. If she really wanted to be Diana, why didn’t she just fight alongside her or trying to fight night crime that she suffered with. Her motivations did not fully make sense to me.

Slight tangent, but being able to convince one's audience is a fundamental part of debating. As a general principle, the adversary will never change their stance, even if proven wrong as most likely they have a vested interest in their perspective. Still, it is everyone else who needs convincing whether or not they are acting in good faith. It is a pretty good lesson in general, and why we need to train our own critical thinking to digest what is going on. Though naturally? There's a lot of people who would make the wish because "no body will tell me what to do" or out of spite.

I *do* love Gal Gadot's acting. She wasn't particularly bright, back to her F&F years but since she earned that WW role she has proven to be quite a talented and versatile actress when it comes down to comedy, soft drama and action. I am impatient to see what she has to offer with her Cleopatra film remake. Although I do hope that this time, Hollywood is going to quote the illegitimate maternal/Egyptian roots of the Greek Aegyptian Lagid Queen-Pharaoh. It's quite absurd that the contemporary world has absolutely no idea that the last ruler of both Hellenistic Egypt and the Pharaonic era was a descendant of its legitimate indigenous god-rulers from the mother side, in spite ample literary and biographical evidence by Senecus of Ptolemy XII Auletes's wife-cousin Cleopatra V (or VI) not being her natural mother and that she shared the same mother with her younger sister Arsinoe IV, mother who was a native Thebean courtesan sired by the vainquished dynasty of "Anti-kings" of Upper Egypt ("rebel" dynasty that descended in direct line from a son of Nectanebo II, the 28 previous dynasties of Egypt - save the Persian Satraps - and Kushite royalty) .

I still don't understand how they could have 1984 be the origin of Cheetah and involve some random artifact vs introducing Vixen. It was the absolute perfect setup for a Wonder Woman/Vixen duo movie. Had less issues with the first, though I will say, her convincing Aries with the lasso to see that without humanity he has no power is one of my favorite comic moments. Movie didn't quite hold up with that. (Other mini issue - Zeus being the main patron, or even A patron, of the Amazons was just.... so wrong haha) Love your analysis of the themes here though! Very on point!!! Funny comment on the second movie ending in the Marston way though - that she kills Aries and saves Maxwell Lord like this, but in the comics, Lord is the one she kills XD Not saying she should have, but it was an interesting choice, considering one is a god with a skewed view of life/death and one is a human who has a different fundamental motive. (Comics version of him was way worse - in the movie, killing him wouldn't really have been justified)

Why is it so hard for writers to write Wonder Woman as a diplomat and warrior at the same time?
@ptolemeeselenion1542
@ptolemeeselenion1542 2 жыл бұрын
@8:41 My issue about Grant Morrison's take on WW is that, although he is not wrong in his own way, what he didn't get is that when you have to adapt a many-times-rebooted fiction franchise into the contemporary cinematic medium, you equally has from first to adapt the rationale and responses from one epoch to the other: Marston's WW was an alternative to the chauvinist violence of the WW2 era. DCEU Wonder Woman has to answer to the entire modern era up from WW1 to this 1990s graphic novelist's dream fantasy that is our pessimistic, nihilistic, paranoid post-9/11 era. And for such reasons, of course the vision that Jenkins and Snyder holds about Amazonian civilization is going to differ greatly from Marston's vision-- and more in line with the modern mainstream comic boom continuity but with a greater audiovisual sensitivity. Why suggesting flying machines in a Magical Realist science fantasy peplum where people has been breeding for aeons blessed horses that may covers up an entire island as fast as cars, and can themselves jog up long distances at sprinting speeds?? They never leave the island and doesn't need nor want to: leaving the island and its Zeus-given blessings equates to a lifetime of self-exile and a deletion sentence for regular Amazonians (WW being the only exception due to her godly heritage and this being immortal and stuck forevermore into her prime age wherever she goes) . All of the knowledge they hold about the whereabouts of Men's World overthe past 5,000 years comes down implicitly from a millennia worth of mortal shipwreckers, refugees and likely past contacts with the Atlanteans before their ancestral beefs became too strong, as well as magic. Otherwise, Wonder Woman wouldn't be innately omnilingual and fluent into the knowledge of military treaties, books and documents written _after_ the reclusion of Amazons at Themyscira such as Sun Tzu's Art of W*r, classical Greek philosphy or Sumerian language. You may also notice that some Amazonians are clearly sharing about the same mental age than Diana pre-exile, which implies that she was not the sole child born into the island and that a few Amazonians might have never knew the ensl4vement of their r4ce by Men nor the betrayal of Ares around 3000 BCE (least the Battle For Earth against Darkseid and its Apokoliptan armadas around 24,000 BCE) . Whom to Amazonian philosophy, it has been widely touched upon many times over the course of the DCEU films: but of course, their take is not going to be as modernist as Western society because the whole point is to make people understand that the Amazons are still this isolationnist society stuck into their blend of Bronze Age and Heroic Age, not the kingdom of Wakanda. Their philosophical rationale is propagandistic and dual in nature: Men are fundamentally good _yet_ corruptible, imperfect and hubristic. Gods made Men at their image and loved them so dearly They created the Amazons to serve them and guide them peacefully into the light not as rulers but protectors on the blindsides (basically a reintrepretation of the biblical myth of the creation of Adam & Eve, of the Talmudic myth of Lilith and the Greek myth of Pandora minus the female protagonists been horrid, selfish sinners) . Ares infers into the evolutionary/spiritual path of Mankind and became not just corruptible but _corrupted_ : Men revolts against the Amazons, wages w4rs against themselves and make Ares stronger, thus indirectly allowing him to delete all of their Creators. Mankind plunges into a vague dark age of sorts and grow brighter even without the need of Gods and Amazons, but still a home garden tree is going to turn wild or sick if left unchecked and unprotected: Ares might be still around *and so possibly does some obscure forces from beyond the stars that are even worse than the Seducer.* Wonder Woman was groomed her entire youth believing she was the solution to the problem and will gyrates her way with her Themyscyran counterpart to the Post-Yahveist rabbinical _Tikkun Olam_ by saving Men and re-esthablishing Love, Justice and Zeus's way with her insulary ideas and naivete. The other side of the coin is that in truth, Amazonians believes that Men _used to be good_ but now "ain't sh*t" like some might says in the AAVE culture, that Ares is not just in fault and that Diana is too good for the world not just because she incarnates the past semblance of naivete of the Amazonians but is also literally the last of the Old Gods (which is too questionable, given that Flash's Speed Force being magical in nature seems to affect both Old Gods and New Gods alike-- inferring to a connection with the late Hermes or some universal force, that Chief is too a Demigod like Diana. That both the Atlantean Royal House and Aquaman pre-pseudo-soft-reboot were implied to be the descendants of the late Poseidon with Aquaman who used to be identified as a Demigod in DCEU official online sources up in 2017. And the implicit implication following Superman's encounter with Steppenwolf and Darkseid in ZSJL that Kal-El may be the last living deacendant of Rao, a Kryptonian Sun God-- thereof a lasting descendant of the Old Gods too! Besides, wasn't Pyro in the 2016 S.S. film the metahuman host or avatar of some Aztec God of Fire-- thereof the host of an Old God??) and that the world deserves its misery, for as Mankind _indirectly deleted God_ off the Olympus, felled corrupted since the day they laid eyes on Darkseid's former sources of power if not even millennias prior and ensl4ved the Amazonians just because they couldn't stand superwomen looking down upon them mortals. My two cents. Edit: That's the whole point about the discourse of the DCEU: about all of these formidable civilizations being so out-of-touch and decadent. Krypton doomed itself into a planet-wide nuclear collapse and had, like you said so well yourself in a previous video essay, their own heroes turning arms against each other. Atlantis felled into the deep out of hubris and pride some 12,000 years ago and since then jealously looked down upom the Surface People. Homo Magis are eugenistic a-holes living recluse in alternate dimensions and wants to either ensl4ve Mankind for or against Steppenwolf (Enchantress) or to find 100% saintly minded 12-years olds that will never sin nor getting tempted to abuse their powers (Shazam) , with Billy Batson been chosen because he was *_barely_*_ good-hearted enough_ . Amazonians lost any faith to Men much like the contemporary feminist movement lost faith in men with a little M --(minus the g3nder w4rs, hatemongering, cancel culture, wokery and rejoicing madly over the passing of Kevin Samuels, but I disgress)-- , Batman nearly became the very monster he dedicated his entire life to crusade against it, Barry Allen barely has any life outside of his father and Victor Stone is basically what happens when Astro-Boy-and-Frankeinstein's-Monster-Meets-Superman got the same complexion than Trayvon Martin in a world and society that was xenophobic enough to yell at Superman, their savior, to quote-unquote "go home" . The entire Earth is a complex ontological ball of yarn one has to cautiously untie and Wonder Woman, a Christ-like figure, nearly fell tempted to selfishly knot it down Alexander style anytime she fell into a world threat level dilemna-- or... proverbially "cross over the desert" .

This video really makes me think back to how I saw one of your early videos and liked it so much I subscribed before it was even over, but then found myself constantly disagreeing with you to the point of unsubscribing, then continually seeing your videos in my recommended to the point I eventually had to resubscribe, realizing that I was drawn to the potential I saw in your writing style, only to find myself annoyed just like before, again and again, sitting through frustrating Spider-Man take after frustrating Spider-Man take, glad you were saying things nobody else was saying but also irritated at the conclusions you drew from them, all the while silently knowing I wouldn't dare let that put me off from your channel, because deep down I understood that one day you'd release some video about a couple of mid movies I enjoyed but never expected to think about ever again, and I would be utterly spellbound for reasons I can't explain. I guess I'm just trying to say, you're a really good writer. Even if for only fifteen minutes (honestly felt like four minutes), you made me care about art I initially dismissed, and that's really valuable to me. I initially dismissed your art, and I'm glad you happened to change my mind... or maybe that was the algorithm insisting it knows my tastes better than I do. Either way, I thought about not watching this video, but I did, and it did not disappoint. The admission that it's a synthesis of discordant ideas you weren't really all that sure about really just makes me excited for whatever comes next. Not the Spider-Man stuff... I think I'll skip that, as usual. I used to love Spider-Man. No Way Home aggressively popped my love for that character out of its skin and stuffed its compressed meats into a meat grinder and left in room temperature to ripen for the duration of time since that movie released. Can you imagine if Patty Jenkins lost her figurative marbles and made Wonder Woman 3 as a Wonder Woman: Dead Earth adaptation? Probably in the few that actually truly love that book. It not only would be fitting considering the short title would be WW3, but I feel this film Diana needs to lose everything and just strip her to her basic modern attitudes, like being a diplomat between differing factions, pinning for unity when there isn't any. Basically Logan but Wonder Woman and also Superman gets the snot beat out of him by Diana so hard she ends up killing the world in the process.

I used the read George Perez Wonder woman ( in which the first movie was based ) although watching Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman is a treat regardless, they botched her story in the 1984 movie, I really hope Jerkins just do the directing and leave the writing to someone that really understand the character in the third movie

Great video, except for not mentionin that the original WW final battle would have been more like fighting a giant clowed if the director had her way. So overall I dotn think the final climax is that much of a diturent for the movie as a whole

While this overall discussion does not pertain to the animated films or any appearances in general outside of the DCEU solo films and Marston's original ideas, I could not give an option on WW (2017) without relating it to WW (2008). Because whenever I say I could not get into WW ('17), it's entirely because WW ('08) is just a smarter, more "show, don't tell" version of the film. From the conflict between the Amazons and Ares being boiled down to narration, to Hippolyta brushing off Ares around the intro, to Wonder Woman's constant doe-eyed gaze, I just found too many things were downgraded. To the point where my favorite part *was* the climax just for how overtly dumb it was. I went into WW1984 expecting, quite frankly, a Batman & Robin scenario. If I didn't hate it, it would at least be laughably bad. Yet by the time we got to Max Lord and his son, all I could think was "Oh no.. I'm starting to become intrigued." And once I was done with the movie, I oddly didn't dislike it at all. It wasn't WW ('08) for me by a long stretch, I'd even say WW Bloodlines was just a better written film. But I didn't regret watching it and found myself liking it more than WW ('17). That all being said, I very much enjoy the Wonder Woman that has come before. I learned most about Marston through the docudrama "Professor Marston & the Wonder Women", and it's frankly quite fascinating. I can only imagine how much of it was Hollywoodified for the motion picture, but as someone openly polyamorous and in love with psychology, I was intrigued to learn more after seeing it, and grew to appreciate the character more in the process. Even after having already loved her in WW ('08) and the Justice League cartoons from the 2000's.

you have to understand wonder woman is basically a public property now. And the idea behind these superheroes and stuff is that they are flexible in how you interpret the character. As you pointed out, 3000 years should have evolved the Amazon, but so should our interpretation of the character after decades as well. Wonder Woman was created to Marston's idea on love and bondage, but you have to understand that that was what in that time period of world war and stuff where a radical idea on gender was the way to educate new ideas about equality and stuff. But in 2017, modern era, that message could also take in all sorts of perspectives. You may concern that it kinda being unfaithful to the character's origin. But i mean, character development, imagination, and what that character supposed to be simply would not work if you stick to this older narrative. It just wouldnt work. Wonder woman as a idol for women through nearly a century should also embrace that change and redefine of the character, while staying faithful to some of the ideas of her core values, which is love, truth, peace vs war, warrior spirit and stuff that are supposedly a binary notion on what it is. As it stands, a story about true equality of woman would have worked much better than Marston's idea. You cant expect that character to keep generating new ideas and narratives through comics and films while fixated in only the very origin without evolving it into something. Rather, it is vital to find balance between new reimagination of the character and also staying faithful to the origin. We shoudnt see wonder woman, a fictional character, as simply one character with definite qualities to abide to. She is a representation of an ideology of equality through love. and how to convey that message can only be realised through different interpretation of the character. To keep the legacy of the original creator, we should use his intention of spreading ideology through WW, essential a tool for propaganda, we must continue to forward to keep on coming up with new ideas about how the narrative of the character could evolve to fit the modern world. Take a step back, these changes and differences made to this character is the manifestation of the evolution of feminism through history and time

New fan of these videos here! Appreciate the time you take to review them. I can’t say that agree with your “guilty pleasure” of WW1984. The reason being is that to me, a guilty pleasure is a film that is laughably incompetent. WW1984 has rape in it committed by the hero whose whole ideology is TO PREVENT THAT. It is disgusting that patty jenkins and any of the writers/executives didn’t see that and go “no we can’t do that.” The movie also fails because it’s critique of modern American society is stupid. The movie was released during the trump administration and hence Lord Maxwell is suppose to be a parody of trump. Patty Jenkins more or less confirmed that in interviews. Except Maxwell GETS A HAPPY ENDING and dosnt act like trump. Trump in real life is a narcarsistic, sexist, bigoted man who has supported a coup against the USA. While maxwell does have quirks during the movie, he isn’t NOT trump. I won’t go into Cheetah and how she fails as a critique of women being harassed or out down in society. For patty Jenkins to not see how bad this analogy attempt was is baffling. But considering that Jenkins made a movie (a great one at that) that portrayed a female serial killer who deliberately targeted men as a sympathetic, almost anti-hero villain, I wasn’t surprised by her decisions.

Wonder Woman, upon seeing a man who makes poison gas: (*stab*) Wonder Woman, upon seeing a woman who makes poison gas: "Oh, you poor thing, you're not responsible, just run off and help build gas chambers in Austria or something". I will say this about the original comics - WW didn't play favourites and hit the women as hard as the men.

When you say men can be victims, too, you get booed out. And not just by feminists, but most women and even some men. Fookin' bullshit, this is! And that's why Patty Jenkins felt ok to include this.

I was so excited to hear from a psychology and philosophy of consciousness seeker of the past. But what he actually prescribes? Healthy, vigorous young people submit to a benign, kind authority. That just sounds really perverse to me. I don't think deep psycho-social, deep sociological S & M is what we need in the world. Very strange. Not appealing.

The part where Morrison talks about how the Amazons seems to not advanced over thousands of years... As I know they live in isolation, hidden from the world. So they had no reason to advance, there was no competition for them. While nations with lots of opposing other nations around them have to improve constantly to stay relevant. Just look at the tumultous history of Europe, and the other isolated parts of the world. Europeans already were sailing around the world, and used cannons and guns, meanwhile isolated island people in the Pacific were still living in small huts in a tribal society. Or while europeans explored the New world, the Aztecs were still doing human sacrifices. So yeah, the Isolated amazons not changing since the ancient era makes perfect sense.

Aquaman, The Suicide Squad, Shazam, Man of Steel, JL Snyder Cut, Wonder Woman... there's bad in the DCEU, but also a lot of good. Even movies like the "Ultimate Edition" of BvS have some value... those extra 30 minutes turned an annoying movie full of plot holes, into a flick that is actually a decent bridge between MoS & JL Snyder Cut... I'm very impatient for "Batgirl" and "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom", I hope they turn out awesome.

@@randallflagg3700 sorry, the Wonder Woman films are the only DCEU films I liked. I thought the theatrical version was decent, but all the others I think suck. I would include Shazam in the good column, because I really enjoyed that movie, but it's connected to the main DCEU in name only. There's no connective tissue between them. I often forget it's even part of the DCEU.

I disagree. The Wonder Woman vs Daydreams section of the video does add a potentially interesting layer of depth to what is generally seen as a pure thoughtless, spectacle-driven finale. But I don't think that point nullifies those critiques (not that I think that it was Implicitly Pretentious' intent btw) because it does largely contradict the themes that the rest of the movie was building towards and were presented as the its main takeaways. Not a naturally integrated piece of subtext that could be later highlighted in an-depth video essay.

That's film criticism in a nutshell to you. They did the exact same thing at the Star W*rs Prequel Trilogy films, Michael Jackson's discography and much of Zack Snyder's filmography. They're smub amd obnoxious: so snub amd obnoxious when films that implicitly or explicitly criticize their righteousness has made-- such as _The Truman Show_ , _BVS_ or lastly and very eloquently _Malcolm & Marie_ . It's quite a miracle that they spared _Birdman_ away of their verbalized lynching.

First of all, your video is very entertaining, but I disagree, not with your interpretation of Wonder Woman's creator, he was completely nuts, but with the idea that taking a madman's illusions and turning it into a movie for kids, is perfectly alright, it's not! I know that wasn't what you were trying to say, if I understand you correctly, you were trying to show how the movies were attempting to be faithful to the source material, that the second movie, without the studio's interference, though in a convoluted way, had achieved that goal, but what I'm asking is, was that truly a worthwhile endeavor? We all go to the movies to be entertained, not to be lectured. It seems Hollywood has forgotten that idea, in their rush to push the SJW woke agenda down our throats. Sure, you can say Marston had created the comic book long before all of this, but from what I've read, he considered himself a feminist, which is laughable as you already know, because he was basically a womanizer, or at least a male chauvinist. After all, I seriously doubt he would have allowed his female partners to carry on, each with two male partners of their own, then again, with a sicko like him, who knows. But getting back to the original source material, the comics supposedly for kids, you're right, it was odd to have so many sexually explicit depictions of bondage directed at children, but comics have always been rather questionable, this isn't me in any possible way condoning the heinous business & marketing practices of the comic book industry, who's marred history speaks for itself. What I'm saying is that certain individuals who prey on the innocent, somehow always find their way into places where children gather. Whether it's schools, boy/girl scouts, churches, comics, etc., and once there, they spread their sick ideas a little at a time until it takes root and begins to grow like a cancer. We are living in a world filled with questionable people who are constantly thrusting their sick and twisted ideas into our faces, and we are supposed to smile and be completely accepting, or else be labeled and cancelled for daring to have morals. Yet I would argue, if they simply had Wonder Woman be Athena, who like Thor, had somehow angered her father and as punishment, he cast her out of their realm with partial amnesia and a fraction of her power so that she would have to prove her worthiness to return to Mount Olympus. Along the way, she would fall in love with Steve Trevor, due battle with her brother Aries, which would bring World War One to an end, and inevitably people would start calling her Wonder Woman, the end. That would have been a much better movie, she would still have used love to defeat hate, or rather in this case war, aka her brother Aries, and all of the issues that Paradise Island and her amazon sisters seem to cause would vanish along with them. I know this would be a major departure from the source material, but so what? At least it would make a hell of a lot more sense than anything Marston ever wrote!!!
