New Apache pilots tend to stare at the symbology when hovering instead of, as you pointed out, just look outside and hover. At night however that symbology is gold.

What's the difference between aerodynamic trim and nose to tail trim? Is the former not applying any counter torque with the pedals or what is it?

Hey Casmo. What's your take on the launch sound effect from the previous Hellfire tutorial vid. The irl footage I've heard sounds faster, sharper and "rips". The sim footage sounds hollow, deeper with more base. Which do you recall?

@@thomasmaier7053 Aerodynamic trim = aircraft's body is aligned with the air moving around it, instead of where the aircraft moving in relation to the ground. AFAIK this means less strain on the body of the aircraft and more efficient travel, since the nose is basically pointed at the relative wind direction. Nose to tail trim = aircraft's body is aligned with where you're moving in relation to the ground. You're moving "straight", like you would in a car, but you're exposing more of the body of the aircraft to the oncoming air, causing more drag.

Can we please take a moment to appreciate how beautiful DCS has become in 2022? Ok, so I love the Hind and I love the Apache even more. This was the chopper I've always wanted to see in DCS and now there it is, finally. On top of it all, we will get the Mirage and the Phantom this year. How cool is that, actually? In these difficult times ED still manages to make us smile and enjoy ourselves. Outstanding work, ED. 👍

I returned to playing sims when ED released LOMAC and really got hooked with the Black Shark in 2008. It is amazing to see how far military flight sims have come, with DCS setting the benchmark. For starting out, if the PERF page is providing accurate data, simply increase collective (power) until you reach the predicted hover torque. Takes the guesswork out of coming up to a hover. Apache pilots will hover at 5'. Kiowa pilots will hover at 3'. As Wags mentioned, in Hover mode symbology, full saturation of the velocity vector is at least 6 KTS. In Transition mode, full saturation is at least 60 KTS. The aircraft sits at a 40 KTS attitude on the ground. So... if you feel like doing a perfect 3-point landing, hold about 2/3 saturation of the velocity vector (40KTS ground speed) in transition mode while doing a roll-on landing. Obviously, wind has a say in things, but for the most part, it works every time. Useful for those single-engine landings where a runway is available.
@boggy8557
@boggy8557 2 жыл бұрын
Is that the "power check"? I read in the manual that you should conduct a power check prior to take off but I have no clue what that is and how to do it and it's not described in the manual
@robk5943
@robk5943 2 жыл бұрын
@@boggy8557 Well, we're supposed to do some form of performance planning before the flight, so we know if the machine is behaving as expected. Chapter 7 of the operator's manual is full of fun charts to derive data, and then you find out if your loadout is suitable for a particular mission on a particular day when environmental data is entered into the equation. The PERF page is supposed to come close to what the manual would tell you, but as of a few years ago, it wasn't 100% aligned with the book data. Power Check is mainly verifying Go/No-Go data. If you're pulling more than expected, you may not have enough power to do certain maneuvers, etc. For the purpose of the game/sim, the PERF page should suffice. If predicted IGE hover power is 62% torque, you should see 62% in the upper left corner of the HDU at a 5' hover. If that's the case, you can assume the rest of the PERF page is good (or good enough for an unclass'd sim).

@@robk5943 Thank you so much for the detailed reply, that's awesome! The other thing I was wondering about was how do Apache pilot's fly a traffic pattern when learning to fl the Apache on the conversion course? I have been searching for info on this but google has been useless...
@robk5943
@robk5943 2 жыл бұрын
@@boggy8557 If you mean Aircraft Qualification Course, or Transition Course, it's the same as learning to fly any other helicopter. I transitioned from UH-60's and the only immediate difference I noticed was that landing on the tailwheel first (for aerodynamic breaking during a roll-on or single-engine landing) was a no-no in the Apache. My IP thought it was funny, though. Patterns are rectangular with an upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, and final legs. Most traffic patterns are performed to facilitate emergency procedure training, so we try to achieve the desired airspeed and altitude on the downwind as soon as possible. Then, throw in a simulated malfunction, and hopefully end up on the runway with the greasy side down a few minutes later.
@robk5943
@robk5943 2 жыл бұрын
@@boggy8557 Also, Force Trim - in the form of a mag break to hold the cyclic and pedals - is always on. Some transitioning seat-of-your-pants pilots (OH-58D) made a habit of holding the trim release button, but I tried as best I could to break them of the habit. Interrupting the force trim also interrupted the tech that can make mediocre Apache pilots looks like Chuck Yeager. Keeping it interrupted just had the opposite effect, but also took the "fight" out of the flight controls. I learned to set it and forget it, then use pressure/counter-pressure against the mag break resistance. I taught it, too. Drastic control position changes warranted major trim interrupts, but in a traffic pattern, not really. And, you don't need to interrupt the force trim to move the up/down stick, which helps. If your heading and airspeed are good and you only need to come up ten feet to be within standard, just pull up slightly on the collective and leave everything else alone. The altitude will change, but the airspeed and heading will remain mostly unchanged. Seat-of-your-pants pilots had to change everything when making small adjustments like that. Not the case in the Apache. Some habits are hard to break, though.

I just sat through a whole series of how to set up the controls for, perform a cold start for, and how to get airborne with an AH-64D and I don't even have DCS. This was very interesting to watch and I'm blown away at the complexity of the aircraft in DCS! Watching the entire process on getting this simulated beast airborne was very entertaining and I feel like I learned a lot, even though I'll probably never use the info. It certainly gave me a greater appreciation for the complexity of these machines. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the symbology tutorial as well it helps me understand what the aircraft is doing. Even though I find myself reacting to what I see the aircraft actually doing outside the window lol. I managed to get airborne a coupe of days ago. But I find myself tilting on the right side even with the rudder trim locked slightly to the left, be it may not far enough to the right. But that too I will learn what the sweet spot is that I managed the first time I got it. Although my landing was a bit rough I pat myself onthe back for not exploding her lol! But that is another Tutorial I will have to study! For now its practicing hovering and taxing and flight!

@@Dreamshadow1977 The SCAS (Stability and Control Augmentation System) works behind the scenes to keep the aircraft stable and to permit the various hold modes to function. It has +/- 10% authority on each axis (except pitch, where it appears to have 20% forward authority). Those grey boxes on the control indicator are centered around the physical control positions, and show where the SCAS could drive the actual command to the rotor heads. It's transparent to the pilot since the SCAS commands are essentially superimposed on the cockpit control positions with no feedback to the stick. In game, on the control indicator, the red X's appear to denote the trim position, the white diamonds show the control positions, and the green +'s show the SCAS command within the grey SCAS authority boxes.

Amazing demo. A liked that exhale voice when You finished doing hover demo :-D. But I've just realized, that when You release the Apache, it's gonna be in beta for some time, right? :-((( Isn't it possible to release the new modules for non-beta version as well? Pretty please.

Currently in the Apache course and genuinely curious if that’s how other people’s symbology looks in the HDU. It took me like 5 helmet adjustments and eventually a smaller helmet just to barely fit the entire display into my eyepiece. If it was as condensed as this video shows that would be so much better for your scan. And we’re not supposed to go into the maintenance function of ihads to shrink it. I hate spending so much time on run ups making sure I can see all four corners in my eye

Well I would love take off and fly around but for some reason when I lift the collective and the wheels unstick the damn thing only goes backwards....it appears the input from the joystick is ignored. Yes I did ctrl/enter to put that box thing in the corner and yes according to that everything is fine ...but Im still only taxiing/flying backwards. Can you fire hellfires backwards?

A technique for visual hovering is to concentrate your view at 45 degrees either left or right of the nose. From there, you can see both lateral and longitudinal drift pretty well. From the 45 you also only need to move your head 45 degrees to either the nose or the side, instead of 90 degrees from the nose to the side. Obviously, you can switch which side you are focused on or move your head as needed to avoid obstacles! BWT, doesn't the AH-64 have wheel brakes to slow a ground taxi?
@merttunc5560
@merttunc5560 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it have wheel brakes but they 99% using the cyclic to slow down or stop and then they press the brakes and put parking brake on position. I mean yes you can use brakes but cyclic is the right way for this.

I'm sure this will all makes sense once it is released, but I am a little confused on the rear wheel lock after it has been disengaged. Does it have a "detent" position that it snaps in or do we need to get it straight by rolling forward and attempting to re-engage while we roll?
@MattWagner

There is a pin that will only lock the tailwheel forward when the caster is lined up. Once aligned, the pin can be set and lock the caster.

The real confusion will be to change the muscle memory of pushing the LEFT pedal for anti torque instead of the RIGHT like in the Mi-24 and Mi-8 (if you have several flight hours with those modules).

I find everything that isn't Russian to be easier to fly. The Hind is a particularly odd one, sharing some similarity with the Mi-8 unsurprisingly, in that at higher collective loading it really does take a boot-load of pedal input to hold steady. Makes it feel very analogue and believable.
@ComdrStew
@ComdrStew 2 жыл бұрын
@@frostycab The Hind has the trim system. I was fighting the trim at first until I found out how it actually worked. You can just take off in the hind without pedal inputs, as long as you have the yaw trim on.

You guys need to have the acceleration que move with the cyclic while the aircraft is on the ground too. The acceleration que is live indicator of the cyclic postion. Also there's no altitude indicator for msl. Only agl. It's annoying having to reference a flight page for my altitude when a real hdu displays msl and agl.
