Mover, Doug, and I react to the DCS F-4 Phantom. AMAZING, can't wait to try it.
Every Monday at 8PM ET, Mover (F-16, F/A-18, T-38, 737, helicopter pilot and wanna be race car driver) and Gonky (F/A-18, T-38, A320, dirt bike racer, and awesome dad) discuss everything from aviation to racing to life and anything in between. Send your topic ideas to cwlemoine at cwlemoine.com!

I have literally been waiting for this since flight sims were a thing, we saw the Phantom in Janes Fighters 20 years ago I guess, but it was sadly sub par, never to be seen again since, the level of detail we see here just astounds me :D

I also saw the Thunderbirds and the Blues flying phantoms. I got to be around phantoms and F-14's as well as a A4's, F5's, F8's, A7's and E2B-C in the late 70s as a ADJ stationed at Miramar and later at Norfolk. as a 3D asset creator now for a DCS third-party, (CrossTail's AD1 Sky Raider) I am blown away by what Heatblur has done, I can't wait for the A6 intruder they are also working on. the phantoms would leave a bathtub ring around the airfield from the smokiness of the engine when they were circling before landing.

Nice! I was wondering if you guys would do a reaction to this! Count on Heatblur to sweat the details...they are the same team that did the F-14 for DCS. Would love to see you guys get some reactions from the old Phantom pilots.

I'll probably get it in the future when I get a better HOTAS set up. Plus I kinda have a family connection to the F-4 in that my grandpa worked on the F-4 phantom when he worked at mcdonnell douglas, even worked on the electrical wiring for the Gemini capsules.

Lol! All I know is I grew up on the original MS-DOS Microsoft Flight Simulator taking off from Meigs Field in Chicago on a jerky, tiny monochrome screen and would have loved to play something like DCS back then. Long live MACAIR's Phabulous Phantom!

Yep, same with me (in color though) on the Commodore 64, Amiga 500, then IBM PC clone. Flew every PC flightsim I could get my hands on and was very close to joining the USAF after high school, but decided to remain a civilian and pursue my electrical career. A little over a decade later, I went to flight school and got my PPL. All thanks to PC flight simulators 🙂

@@terraoftime; They did say that the want to do a naval Phantom. But I disagree with your statement about maneuverability, the F-4E with Agile Eagle slats is more maneuverable than an F-4J. The F-4S added slats for Navy Phantoms, but they still didn't quite match the F-4E. Concur on the radar part however as F-4J/S with late model Sparrow would be scary.

There were variations on the expression, but at its simplest, it was "With enough thrust, you can get a brick to fly." The F-4 was a prime example. I heard the primarily thing taught at Topgun was how to use its power advantages even though it wasn't as maneuverable as the Soviet fighters that it would likely face. It was also used as a bomb truck. Big engines. Lots of weapons. Not maneuverable but it got the job done.

Test flights were full FCF flights including mach runs. It was an amazing experience to say the least.

I remember them well! The biggest fighter at the time, the baddest fighter of the times! I am curious; it's a Navy fighter built from the ground up and only later did the Air Force get interested in them and Heatblur brings out the Air Force version first, what's that all about, maybe they said why at some point, but it's a Navy Fighter, just saying. Have a good one!

That was the doing of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. He said they should have a look and they were impressed with the performance. It was better for many missions than anything else they had, but for their version they insisted on a cannon. McNamara was also behind the USAF adoption of the A-7. However, McNamara was also responsible for the TFX program that tried to make a common platform aircraft for the USAF and Navy. The F-111 in USAF (and RAAF) versions was OK, but Navy's F-111B was an utter failure although the lessons learned brought the F-14.
