In this video, we talk about the third and fourth NATO aircraft shot down over Bosnia. The third one was certainly the most famous case. It involved a USAF F-16 piloted by Captain Scott O'Grady. The aircraft was hit by an SA-6 missile belonging to Bosnian Serbs while on a Deny Flight patrol. Despite a direct hit, O'Grady ejected. He managed to survive for six days, evading Serb search parties, eating ants and collecting rainwater. Then finally, another F-16 pilot picked up on his radio beacon and confirmed that he was alive after all. A USMC rescue team was sent to pick him up and despite running into serious Serbian anti-aircraft defense, O'Grady was safely evacuated.
Final NATO aircraft shot down over Bosnia belonged to the French Air Force. A two-seater Mirage 2000N took part in Operation Deliberate Force. Immediately after releasing their bombs on a Serbian ammunition depot, Captain Frédéric Chiffot and Lieutenant José Souvignet had to eject from their Mirage that was hit by a shoulder-launched missile.
