If you wanna go for a high-intelligence Psi-Warrior build, an interesting multiclass option would be the Graviturgy Wizard, and flavor the whole thing as a sort of Grav-Knight. Since all of the Psi-Warrior's psionic-based abilities involve either repelling or enhancing attacks, or otherwise moving objects, you could easily reflavor them as the character manipulating gravity around the battlefield, possibly while swinging a big-ol' hammer to and fro. I imagine the focus would be more on spellcasting than using a weapon, but that's more for you to figure out as a smart numbers guy XD

An Armorer Artificer with returning weapon could probably get at least one ranged taunt. And combining Echo Knight with any Melee taunt extends the range. Love the psionic angle tho!

Also a kalashtar bear totem barbarian build would be cool as well (with war wizard to protect saves with arcane deflection since you probably won't be casting spells anyways!)

Absolutely love the Ancient Guardian Barbarian, I played a minotaur Ancient guardian barbarian in a campaign last year. In his earlier life he was all about himself and hurt a lot of people in his youth. He eventually got into a really bad place, but changed his ways with the support of a crusty old dwarf Sergeant in the local city guard. I re-flavored the "ancestors" as the spirits of those he had killed in his past and, later multiclassed into Echo Knight fighter where he learned to manifest an echo of himself representing "the road not taken" and uses it and the spirits as a constant reminder that he can be better than his past would like to dictate. Between the mobility of the echo and the 3rd and 6th level AG Barb abilities, it was quite useful at interceding for the party's protection.

Finally, so pumped. I've been sitting on the idea of a ranged ancestral guardian for ages. Great stuff as always. My personal idea was more of an anti-tank. Go Owlin or Arrakora, Ancestral 3, undead warlock 1 for form of dread's once per turn frighten on attacks. Then invest in battle master fighter with things like pushing, frightening, taunt, disarm for "16" levels. (Or mix and match the last few levels as you want) Hang as far away as possible and frighten the melee dude and push him out of combat, then ancestral the ranged guy so he can't deal any damage. Play it like a guardian angel.

Thank you for this interesting tank, Colby. Can't wait to see what concept you tackle next! If I were to play this character starting level 1 barbarian, I'd like to think the character starting off is "tortured/bothered" by their "ancestral guardians" throughout their life which brings them into a furious rage. Maybe, it goes 2 ways either they know about their heritage and reject their guardians or they don't know and seek out what the "guardians" are. By level 3 barb, they start to accept the help of or learn and understand the guardians to make better use of their new abilities to help others around them. By level 6 (3Barb/3Fight), the character learns to better accept, control, and utilize their guardians abilities to better protect others or for their own offensive capabilities.

A fun high-int Psi Warrior build I’ve looked at is mostly fighter but with 2 levels of War Wizard for the Arcane Evasion and initiative boost. My favorite Ancestral Guardian idea is mixing it with Rogue for soft-taunting a foe and then bonus-action disengaging to force them to pursue us

I could see a high intelligence Psi warrior and Battle Smith Artificer (weapon attacks made with Intelligence) being a pretty good nova build. Use a hammer, crusher feat movement to hit them into the air, Telekinetic thrust to increase that movement. If you can get Pushing Attack maybe you can talk your DM into letting you stack it with the Thrust to potential get some more fall damage on top of the damage you do. Plus the mental image of “you swing your hammer up and they go flying three stories into the air” is really fun.

This kinda feels like you could take the taunt even further beyond. Some armorer artificer level you give you access to two separate taunts. Like the Tortle with higher intelligence would be a great base for this two taunt variant.

Using a ranged tank character, it was the most fun I had playing Pathfinder 1e. It was heavily optimized, sometimes using technicalities that didn't make sense in fiction I wouldn't use today. Still very much fun. For my build, I was allowed anything on the Pathfinder SRD. So I went for a Warder class with the Zweihander Sentinel archetype. It's 3rd party, but on the SRD under 'Path of War', so it is allowed. The archetype lets me play a two-handed defender, with a bonus to AC when wielding a two-handed weapon. The bread and butter class maneuvers: - Enduring Crane Strike and its later level upgrades (Silver Crane) - attack an enemy. On a hit, deal damage and heal an ally. - Warning Roar (Golden Lion), Sanguine Barrier (Scarlet Throne), Silver Crane Feathers (Feat) - Immediate action. Make a skill check. On a success, prevent the damage of one enemy attack in full. Warning Roar has a 60 ft. range, Sanguine Barrier can only be used on yourself, and the Feathers has a 30 ft. range, but you take the damage instead of preventing it. Warning Roar is obviously the best one. Look at the other ones as bonuses, for when you need to prevent damage but when Warning Roar is on cooldown. - Silver Crane Style (Feat) - togglable, but should be always on. Reduces your AC by 1. Increase the AC of all other allies within 30 ft. of you by 1. Number increases as you level. This is the "you should attack me instead of my allies" feature. - Scarlet Eye's Perception (Scarlet Throne) - Swift action. Resolves the next attack using your enemy's Touch AC. Basically a big bonus to hit. Note that unlike in 5e, the PF1e equivalent of a bonus action and a reaction use the same action. Like, in PF1e, think of your reaction as the bonus action of your next turn taken early. Bottom line, you can't use this ability if you also used Warning Roar or its semi-equivalents. But if there was no reasonable damage to counter, feel free to use Scarlet Eye's Perception. Then you can also optimize further by dipping. 1 level in the Psionic class named Aegis gives you some free Dexterity, extra Strength, or movement speed. Almost as equivalent to an ASI from 5e. 1 level in Unchained Monk with the Kata Master archetype and the Master of Many Styles archetype, both compatible with each other, give you an exploding 1d6 bonus to certain skills (a ribbon feature to replace Stunning Fist, a feature you're not going to use anyway because it requires unarmed attacks), and allows you to pick up the Silver Crane Style feat, a style feat, a level or two earlier. Do note that my character's race was Merfolk with the Strongtail archetype. 15 ft. movement speed, I took the Aegis dip for the extra movement speed, not for the extra ASI. It's also a bit weird to see a Merfolk wearing heavy armor underneath psychoactive skin. It's not a choice I would make again considering it being weird in fiction. I hope this was fun reading.

Tell me what you think. Assuming you see this. A few ways you can go with thrown weapon feat. One that allows you to use dex might be nice but here is what I come up with on the fly: Throw Anything _________________________________________ Thanks to your training and expertise with thrown weapons, you gain the following benefits: - You may treat any weapon that does not already have it as if it had the thrown weapon property. The range for these attacks start at a base of 10/30 weapons with the light property have a range of 20/60 and items with the heavy or two handed property have a range of 5/15. - Being with in 5 feet of a hostile creature doesn't impose disadvantage on your attack rolls made with weapons that have or have been granted the thrown property. - When you use the Attack action and attack with a one handed weapon, you can use a bonus action to draw and attack with a one handed thrown weapon. Your off-hand must be free to take this action.

Speaking of a high Int psi warrior fighter, I spitballed a build based on Treantmonk's Armor of Agathys analysis videos. While he ends up favoring Cha and going ancestral guardian barb + clockwork sorc, I came up with an alternative build on the same principle (i.e. reducing incoming damage via features to maximize Agathys uptime before the temp hp get eaten up) that favors Int and goes psi warrior + abjuration wizard. (N.b.: have to go Mark of Warding Dwarf to get access to AoA.) You can combine the psi shield and abjurer's ward for big damage reduction and lots of AoA uptime. No soft taunt but I bet some Webs would piss off enemies enough to come try and disrupt your concentration...

@Colby I was thinking about what you said in the video that one time that you would love to have a higher Int to make better use of the Psi Warrior abilities. I think that an interesting spin on a Psi Warrior tank build would be to pair it with Armorer and War Wizard. Armorer allows you to use Int for your attacks and damage while the War College gives you Arcane Evasion, the initiative boost, Shield, and a few more spell levels. This would also be very SAD (Int/Con). You could also take Telekinesis and Mage Hand to allow for Bonus Action shoves at up to 60' which is really helpful to move your teammates out of melee range. I'm not sure of the mix of levels for the optimized build though. Want a challenge? 😀

Oh, easy tank build with psi warrior: Guardian Armorer Artificer 3 (4 for ASI at some point) and the rest fighter with psi warrior. Same issue with this build, only getting extra attack at 8 as the earliest, but at level 14 you can put disadvantage on 3 enemies each turn and have a huge amount of intellect for attacks and psi energy dice. Might not have the resistance to physical damage but a nice natural boost to damage and AC.

Love this idea. I have been trying to figure out fun ranged tank build ideas and my next idea to sort through is full range tank. 3 levels of ancestral guardian barbarian + artillerist artificer for protector cannon + psi fighter for defensive field. Basically, I turn my team into tanks with bonus temp hp each turn, rxn defense field to make sure they don't run out, and ancestral guardian debuff on one enemy. Might not be as strong as twilight cleric, but probably more fun for me. A high int build.... An ancestral guardian+armorer build would be fun to debuff 2 enemies especially if you get to artificer level 6 for boots of the winding path...

Loved the video! If you don't want to worry about keeping a stockpile of weapons, picking up 2 levels in artificer could get you the returning weapon infusion along with some other goodies that artificer gets, including fun cantrips like message + mage hand, and spells like absorb elements and catapult to further the psionic and tanky aesthetic. Colby I'm a huge fan and really love your builds! I definitely get a lot of inspiration from them and find they often compliment ideas I've had as well. I am pretty confused by this build though. Ancestral Guardians already get Spirit Shield at 6, which is an unlimited use damage reduction at range that does more than Psi Warriors does on average, even when they all scale up. You can apply this at "range" by taking the Echo Knight Fighter subclass and applying your taunt from your echo's location, I think this is a pretty well known interaction. Conversely, you could play and Armorer (Guardian Model) 3/Psi Warrior X, and be able to taunt still (albeit not as good of a taunt but you can apply it to more enemies), and if you go this route you can be almost Int SAD to compliment your Psi abilities as well. I feel like the way you did this build kind of took the worse of both worlds to put them together. That being said, still appreciate the video's and all the build ideas you've given me over the years! Just wanted to give you some feedback on this one. Cheers

Hey Colby. Great idea to split between pf2 and dnd. The main issue I can see is that I will have to read the pf books and learn the rules to fully understand your builds. 😂 Including pf builds will add diversity on your channel. Around 130 builds done already, splitting with pf will give you time to avoid redundancy you would otherwise naturally face. In regards to the "Soft Taunts" I think they really are a winning thing. Because, if they attack you instead of your allies, you win by deflecting damage away from them. But if they attack you allies, then at least it is with disadvantage, improving your allies chance of dodging. Win win for protecting your allies

A build I'd like to see done, and especially to see if it's even viable, is an Avatar of Death. Basically, create a herald of the grim reaper using the undead warlock and Death domain cleric. It'd be pretty MAD, likely needing Dex, Con, Wis, and Cha to pull off. I could see it as a character who goes after undead like liches and vampires who unnaturally extended their lives, or even necromancers who are desecrating corpses to make an undead army instead of letting those people rest in their graves undisturbed.

Ah, my favourite part of the week! I wanted to mention, that you have done 2 moon druid builds so far, one which is a tank, and another that uses powerful concentration spells to do sustained damage. How about a moon druid who tried to get the most damage out of the animal forms themselfs? I was thinking about getting one level of war cleric for a bonus action attack for beasts without multi attack, what do you think?

Very nice build, thank you for the inspiration! I am currently playing a similar one, but with eco knight instead of psi warrior as a fighter subclass. Also, I dumped strength and focused on dexterity and constitution (no bonus damage from rage and advantage from reckless attack, but better AC, survivability, and still a decent attack modifier since my range attacks are based upon dexterity).

It may depend on dm, but most the tables I've been at understand the barbarian reckless attack and rage damage to work with thrown melee weapons because the feature says "melee weapon attacks", and thrown weapons are on the "melee weapon" table. By contrast, thrown weapons don't qualify for sharpshooter features or archery fighting style. With that in mind, this also works really well as a Soul Knife Rogue because psychic blades have a range of 60' when thrown (so further than the others without penalty) and your hands would otherwise stay free for grappling. Similarly, from level 3 rogue, you would already have two attacks a turn since you can throw another psychic blade as your bonus action. I recently played a campaign with a soul knife/ancestral barbarian, and the build really came across as a ranged tank that still excels at grappling due to expertise and adding Psi-bolstered knack dice to any ability check (grappling) that you fail.

I think an nice alternative race choice is the Emerald Gem Dragonborn. They get a psyonic damage resistance and breath attack. You can also pick up the Gift of Metallic Dragon Feat (not that you have to use a dragonborn for this) to give yourself the ability to cast a "shield" on you or your allies within 5 ft pbtpd and heal yourself with cure wounds.

Feel like an int based psi warrior could multi class with a BattleSmith. BS mixes very strongly with basically any fighter class and all attacks would be int based so you can go heavy in that. Added bonus of the steel defender aiding your team mates

hooray new video. The dscryb description! Brought tears to my eyes. I don't really care much about tier scores to be honest. Every build you've made is better than any average one-class build I've made, so even bottom of tier 3 is fine. I just look to see if it is really bad by your standards. Who cares if it is bottom tier 2? Is it fun? Absolutely. That's enough for me :)

@dnddeepdive I have a strong suggestion for you. Hopefully you take it into consideration. I think there's definitely still a hunger for alternative WOTC supporting content. I personally am interested in seeing your Pathfinder builds but I think every other week is a bit too much. What I would really love to see is support in other third party D&D creators as those are the people we've been fighting for all month long. So I think it would be great to see at least maybe once a month or more. You step out of core wizards of the coast D&D rules and show off a build that incorporates either a homebrew subclass or an entire homebrew class from one of the third party D&D creators. I'd still be interested in seeing how you multi-class these creations as I love to multi-class myself, but I'd love to hear you explain and show off some of the lesser known third party products that really deserve the shine and are still in the D&D realm instead of jumping to anyone of the many other systems. These are the companies I want to support going forward. I'm not necessarily looking for a different system. I'm looking to spend my hard-earned money towards the unique and exciting ideas that are often overlooked by mainstream D&D players. I know Taren at the Indestructiboy channel is a talented class designer. Maybe a partner up with him could be an interesting idea? Additionally, Ted from Nerd immersion I know has a partnership with the DM's guild and would put out DM's guild reviews. Maybe a similar partnership could give you an opportunity to review these third party products and make a build while directing people straight to the product for download and possibly getting you a little bit of a kickback with an affiliate link. I know this is long but hopefully you got to the end. TLDR: Why don't you shine some light on third party D&D creators once a month.

Colby! I love your tank builds! But i would love to see one that focuses on protecting your allies by stopping or reducing the damage they take rather than reducing the damge you take! My idea is a 3 level dip in Ancestral Guardian and atleast 7 levels in Cavalier! Those two seem to synergize well! Just need your amazing spin on this build idea! Please! 🙏

Out of curiosity what was/is the tripping point with the rules? I often DM for new players. One of the things I found that helped them grasp the rules was to ask “What do you want to do” when they would reach for the rule book I would say “No, I didn’t ask what rule you wanted to use. What do you want to do” then I would take what they said and tell them what skill/weapon/spell description was applicable and what to roll and where they can find it in the book (we use spell cards though so that makes it a bit easier)

@@donalddouds6033 the rules themselves were simple enough. The difficulty emerged from what they perceived as an overwhelming quantity of options in their spells and features and feats and how to meld them together with the other character's 🙂

@@wandrilleturle36 ah true that can always be the problem for sure. That then goes to the statement “make what you want” not “what you think is needed” and then the play is learning how those characters work well together.

My Bugbear Battlemaster, Ancestral guardian with a Glave and sentinel is a good tank. Can hit them at 15ft, give them disadvantage to attacking others & protect allies, stop them at 10ft a lot of the times they can't hit me and then I just step back 5 attack again and they have to come into 10ft again to try and get into combat. I can grappling strike them if I want to keep them at 10ft, If they run i get a free attach up to 10ft. A few javlins adds ranged effects and if I need a break then meanacing strike or trip to reduce their mmovement and run.

Hey Colby, thanks so much for what you do. Since you asked what we’d like to see, I get that everyone got a little spooked with the OGL shenanigans which made people feel like they need to expand from D&D if that was their one core TTRPG. While it could be good and healthy to be able to learn about Pathfinder, I feel like every other week is a strong knee jerk reaction, and immediately cuts the content in half that built your base. We followed you for a reason, please don’t nerf that information by 50%. Maybe once a month pathfinder. I’d be really bummed if you went 50/50 on this channel.

Predicting Archery battlemaster Edit: I guess I can understand your sentiment about being a debuffer instead of a tank if you're standing in the back line. But I was thinking Menacing attack. If theyre afraid, the enemy can't approach you (or your allies). Goading attack can also be used at range to give disadvantage on all attacks against your allies, and if you're far enough away, they won't be able to attack you.
