The Spirit is indeed connected to the Oni. They are both Yamaokas (Spirit is Rin and Oni is Kazan), the Oni being her great great great (did I miss a great?) grandfather. The katana the Oni uses is also the one Spirit uses, however its broken and rusted from all the age, which is a really nice easter egg!

So, to add more detail to Spirit's power; When she activates her ability, she becomes invisible, but leaves a husk behind. When she stops phasing (such as by attacking or when the ability runs out), the husk disappears. She can't see survivors, but she can still see scratch marks, blood, and hear sounds such as running, breathing, and injured grunts. The only way survivors can tell the Spirit is phasing is by listening carefully to a faint hissing sound. The sound is somewhat directional, so if you listen well, you can tell where the Spirit might be. The Spirit is also a lot faster while phasing, making it a good traversal tool as well. Her power basically revolves around stealth attacks, mind-games, and map traversal. She's one of the stronger killers in the game, but requires a lot of skill and practise to master.

Nobody said in that video yet, but Spirit's name is Yamaoka (yes) Rin. SO yeah, she is descendant of Oni. She was killed (chopped apart by the very katana she uses in game) by her father that Entity originally planned to make a killer, but Rin became yurei and kinda... outhated her father so Entity became interested in her. So now we have Spirit: very sad and very angry dead girl that never surrendered in life (warrior bloodline, hey) and now doesn't really have anywhere to direct her anger to except for Survivors. On more upbeat side, she is usually a Child or a Heart of more wholesome DbD fanarts and one of available characters in the upcoming DbD date simulator (yes, you read it right) "Hooked on You"

Spirit is like Oni´s 6x times granddaughter, they are from the same family (Kazan Yamaoka being Oni, Rin Yamaoka being Spirit.) There is just several centuries between them, because Entity plucks out people from across all of history.

The Spirit is a modern day descendant of Oni. The Spirit was murdered by her father who just snapped one day unable to bare whatever pressure he was under. She came home and he had already killed her mother with their family's katana then attacked her. She eventually went through a window and was on the brink of death after suffering horrendous injuries till the Entity reached out to her and promised her power in exchange for her servitude.

Yayyy, you guys covered Dead by Daylight again! It was such a treat to watch this, and such a fine selection of trailers too. I'm glad you covered both The Oni's and The Spirit's spotlight trailer in the same video because they are in fact related. The Spirit is descendant of Oni and they share the same bloodline. The lore behind the spirit is especially gruesome and horrifying and it gives a lot of insight as to why she became the vengeful spirit that she is. If you want to watch a good lore-breakdown video of The Spirit, I recommend ASHYMOVS: "The Story of Rin Yamaoka AKA The Spirit (Dead by Daylight Lore Explained)" And yes, to answer Ken, Yui has quite strong perks and that is why the developers attached such hefty penalties/cooldowns to them. Yui definitely had some of the most gameplay-impactful perks upon release and were really "out there" for its time. Since then they have been tweaked over the years and certain conditions were added/values have been adjusted in regards to her Perks, but they still remain quite strong and have impactful effects on the match. Yeah, all 3 of them are scary for sure! Personally, I still think I'd be the most scared of The Oni, simply because of how brutal and savage he is. In the mori, he literally rips out the tongue of the survivor... Yeah.

Fun Fact: Rin (The Spirit) is technically an Onryō, the title given to the Ring’s Sadako. In Japanese folklore, an Onryō is a vengeful ghost, who remains in the realm of the living to haunt and take revenge against those they are angry at. In Rin’s case, she accepted a role as a Killer in the hope of killing and taking revenge against her father, who the Entity corrupted and manipulated into killing Rin and his wife, with the original intentions of taking Rin’s father. However the Entity sense a better opportunity with Rin’s rage, and took her instead. The Yamaokas are characterized has having deep and serious anger management issues. Something first seen with Kazan, the Oni. His anger and “Cursed Legacy” would be passed down his family all the way down to Rin and her father. Edit: The Spirit released before Oni, and the way Oni was teased was actually pretty interesting. As you noticed, that Oni mask was in the Family Residence map at first. However leading up to Oni’s release, Behavior posted a teaser image of the mask and katana disappearing from the Family Residence map. This was an obvious clue that an ancestor of Rin was going to be the Killer, however it wasn’t obvious how close of a relative it would be, with many people theorizing it was going to be Rin’s father.

Two interesting facts about Oni and Spirit is she is a great decendant of the Oni, as he lived during Feudal Japan while Spirit is more Modern Day. Also, Oni is the Japanese word for 'Demon'

So from my understanding, the Oni - or as he is known in the lore as Kazan Yamoaka - is a Samurai from feudal Japan who went on a killing spree in an effort to give Samurai a good name. The Oni is a descendant of Rin Yamoaka - the Spirit. Growing up, Rin also had an unrelenting rage like Kazan. One day, Rin’s father was fired from his job as a salary man, and in his rage he murdered his wife with the family heirloom which was a Katana. When Rin came home from university, she saw this and tried to flee but her father chopped her up before she could even escape. This filled her with rage, and she swore she would have her revenge. This rage is what The Entity took advantage of and made a pact with Rin, turning her into The Spirit and granting her power to fulfill her desire for revenge.

Spirit aka Rin Yamaoka is Kazan Yamaoka's (Oni) great (x5) granddaughter. Their wrath is like a curse in their bloodline. Fun fact about Spirit, her father was originally who the Entity wanted to bring as a killer into its realm. He lost his job and went nuts, killing his wife and nearly killing Rin as well, with the same katana she uses in the game. The Yamaoka wrath enveloped her instead and her rage made the Entity change its mind and offered her revenge.

Hex undying got hard nerfed a year ago

The Oni is the only killer that I’m missing the adept trophy for. Felix is one of my survivor mains but I’m currently playing as David, my other main, after they recently announced he’s gay. For a while I used Visionary before I became more comfortable with the various maps and layouts so it was easier to find generators.

Oni started a curse which is why the Spirit has such a rage to continue her life past death.

The thing is with survivors they are all basically the same, some are slightly bigger and smaller and louder or quieter but they are all basically the same thing with a different model slapped on, you can have any perk on any character of the same role so playing Yui doesn't really mean you'll be at any disadvantage. For killers however its a different story, killers are varying heights and speeds and they all have their own powers tied to them besides perks. Killers are the only ones that can be hindered or excel based on their base kit and the player. As for lore DBD has battlepasses that include cinematics that players can unlock about the characters that are the current battlepass focus, you can watch those for some lore

Here is the Spirit's official Lore according to Dead By Daylight: Rin was the only child of the Yamaoka family. She was raised in the dusty halls of a traditional house in Kagawa. She studied Education at Takamatsu, a private university, which weighed heavily on her family's shaky finances. Her mother got ill that year and the bills started piling up. Rin worked part-time in a futile attempt to help lighten the load. Her father faced a debt that grew without end. He started working double shifts in hopes of obtaining a promotion. That's when he started losing sleep. A dark whisper would keep him awake all night, reminding him of his hopeless situation. Exhausted, he started to lose grasp of reality. Fighting to deny what the voice whispered at night, Rin's father made a desperate move. He met with his superior and explained his situation. He begged for a bonus, an advance, time-off---anything. His request was denied. The company had launched a defective production line that was costing them dearly. Someone had to be held accountable and Rin's father fitted the bill perfectly. He was fired after twenty-two years of service. That evening, Rin came home from work. She'd stayed late to entertain customers that lingered at the restaurant. As she parked her bike in the shed, she heard her mother's scream come from the house. She rushed in, climbing up the stairs to her parents' room. There she found bits and pieces of her mother on the floor. Her limbs were clean-cut, tangled up in an unnatural position. Her breasts were sliced up, revealing her rib cage, which was cracked open. Rin gagged. A sharp Katana came crashing down. Rin blocked the blade, which bit into her bare forearm. The shock of recognition interrupted her pain: her father was wielding the Katana with a stoic expression. She cried out to make him stop, but he slashed her arm again. She rushed off and slid on the blood-smeared floor. Using the door frame as support, she raised herself up. The Katana ripped through the wall, cleaving her other arm. She screamed in pain as she limped into the hallway, only to be met by her father's blade. She stepped back, trembling, as she held together the soft loose flesh of her abdomen. Images of her mother's tangled limbs flashed before her eyes. Rin charged at her father, making him stumble back. He punched her torn abdomen and she recoiled in pain. As she struggled to get back up, he slashed her thigh, making her collapse to the floor. As she crawled towards the stairs, he grabbed her hair and yanked her against a partition. The glass shattered on impact and she fell through, landing one floor down. She heard footsteps somewhere above her. With effort, she moved, worming her way into a sea of broken glass. The shards gnawed at her, ripping her flesh. He had to be stopped. He would not get away with what he'd done to her--with what he'd done to her mother. Coughing up blood, her chin grazed the glass, adding to the bleeding. A low-pitched heartbeat started to ring in her ears. Her body felt so heavy she could no longer move. The ground shook with her father's footsteps. She knew she was not going to make it, but she no longer cared. She would make him pay, in this life or the next. A dark Fog slowly veiled her eyes, but it could not subdue her rage. She would not rest--not yet. The darkness whispered, promising blood and revenge. An oath was made and Rin closed her eyes.

Yay, been waiting for this since I noticed the private video in the playlist, lol. Warning, long post incoming. So, as people have pointed out, the Oni is an ancestor of the Spirit. First time in the game two Killers had been connected like that. Spirit came first and the first teasers for Oni showed his mask and sword missing from the family residence. So we suspected a relative, just didn't know the time frame. Some comments on perks. First, wow, I had realized how many of these old perks had actually been tweaked since release until watching them get described. Blight's perk Undying got nerfed so that it only works once instead of up to 4 times. The original version could feel extremely oppressive for Survivors, and the RNG of it could feel bad to Killers. So now it just works the once, but it's also now guaranteed to work. Blood Favor got buffed. The original version was *extremely* weak for a Hex. Limited range and long cool down on a perk that Survivors can disable. So they increased the range and removed the cool down. Even Felix's Built to Last got changed. Instead of restoring charges to your item (Survivors can bring in flashlights, toolboxes, medkits, maps, and keys to help them out, but they have limited use) automatically a few seconds after it runs out you have to get into a locker for a few seconds to do it. The old version only gave you half your charges back, new one gives you 99% the first time, 66% the second, and 33% the third time. Oni's Blood Echo perk itself hasn't been changed, but the Hemorrhage status effect has. For almost 6 years the status was... kinda pointless. It just left more blood on the ground for you to see and track. And blood is generally the least useful tracking tool Killers have. But about 4 weeks ago with the last major patch they changed it. Now it causes you to lose healing progress if you stop healing before you're fully healed. Which indirectly buffed Blood Echo and several other perks. On Yui's perks, Lucky Break actually got buffed since just hiding blood isn't too big a deal. It now also hides scratch marks (big red glowing lines Killers can see on the environment when Survivors run through an area, one of their best tracking tools). It's not *exactly* one use. If you heal back to healthy the timer on it pauses until injured again. So you get 60 seconds of use in total, but it can be spread out over multiple injuries during the match. And Any Means Necessary is typically considered a meme perk by the community, but it is actually pretty strong if Killers don't break pallets, which is why it has a long cool down on use. Pallets are one of the main resources Survivors have delaying the Killer in a chase. Drop a pallet on them, and they get stunned for 3 seconds. Then they have to either go around the new obstacle or spend a few seconds breaking it. Any Means Necessary allows you to reset a pallet that's been dropped but not broken, allowing that resource to be reused in the future. Killer's will generally immediately break pallets, or break them shortly after ending the chase, which is why the perk isn't too popular. It's got potential to be strong, but it's rarely given the opportunity to get used. Interestingly, neither Spirit's or Adam's perks have changed. I will say, it's neat you noticed how good Deliverance is. Normally when you're hooked the 1st time you have a 4% chance to unhook yourself. And each failed attempt removes 20 seconds from your sacrifice timer. You only get 120 seconds in total, and once the first 60 are gone you enter the second stage of sacrifice (which also happens automatically on second hook) known as the Struggle Phase and you can't unhook yourself then. You're literally fighting off the Entity's claws so it can't kill you. So it's generally not a good idea to try and escape by yourself. You typically just make yourself die faster, instead. So a teammate has to stop working on generators and come save you. Deliverance changes that. Now you can unhook with 100% success. No risk of accelerated death, no time wasted by teammates to save you. Though you are left Broken for 60 seconds, which means you can't be healed back to full health again for a minute.

I know im late since i discoverd you 2 recently and now im following all the videos from start to finish. (Ofcourse im a huge dbd fan too, 1700+ hours in the game meanwhile XD) What makes blight even scarier is that there is a real person that has the same... medical condition so to say. Eben byers is his name, he was a pretty famous guy if i recall correctly, during a time where humanity actually thought Radioctavity could heal. So "radithor" which is basicly just radioactive water was sold as a painkiller tonic. The radioactivity killing nerves so you wouldnt feel any more pain. Some victims it hit especcially bad like Eben byers who got addicted to it and used to consume multiple flasks a day. Eventually one day his lower jaw fell right off. And he still lived long enough to get to the hospital and get himself photographed before he died a few hours later. The picture is even up if you dare to see it. So the Blight always remembers me of that unofrtunate instance, i think there was other instances like a bunch of female workers at a fabric faccillity who were forced to drink Radithor so they could work longer and dont get tired as fast. But Eben Byers is the most prominent one.

Dead By Daylight is quite possibly my favorite game to watch that I've never played lol. When a good player is at the controls of one of the scarier killers, it gets pretty terrifying lol. The new killer in particular that's on the test server is freaking horrifying in the right hands lol. Really good at building up tension and just being EVERYWHERE, some of the chases are absolutely relentless and it can jump from being right behind you to popping out from the corner right ahead. The creature itself looks almost a little goofy with how twisted up and weird it is, but being chased by it is a definite no bueno lol. I've been tempted to try out the game a bit myself, but I really don't care for player-versus-player scenarios. I'm far too much of a filthy casual these days lol, and people are way too competitive lol. Though I will say, watching DBD games has shown that there ARE some decent folks out there who play Killer and will sometimes show a bit of mercy if a lot of things really just don't go your way in a game lol (like having someone on your team just quit the game early on, etc). Which isn't to say there aren't ruthless people with horrible manners, those will be found in ANY online public forum lol. But still, sometimes a little faith in humanity can be restored when you actually encounter some basic human decency lol, and it's good to see it come up sometimes. DBD seems to have a pretty good community, all told.

The Oni (Kazan Yamaoka) is the ancestor of the Spirit (Rin Yamaoka). The Oni is from the 19th century, whereas Spirit is from the modern day.

The third one, Spirit was definitely the creepiest. Also it's worth mentioning that personality and beliefs of each part's hunter is the opposite of the survivor for instance in the second one they had the traditional point of view vs. Modern day tradition shattering one. And Oni's special ability doesn't make sense, when he enters the blood wraith he just switches his weapon I guess!he should be able todo it in normal mode as well.

It has been a general consensus in the dbd community that blight, spirit, and nurse are all S tier killers - the best in the game. All 3 come with a fairly high skill ceiling(especially for nurse), but it surely pays off. The highlight of all 3 killers is the absurdly high mobility they’re capable of consistently producing, allowing them to quickly end chases with survivors There are other high mobility killers like wraith, hillbilly, or Oni, but these killers typically have a certain gimmick to them that just makes them not as good in some situations Nurse can effectively ignore pallets, windows, floors, and walls, Spirit can get super close and get surprise attacks on survivors and nullify many loops, and blight can move too fast for survivors to loop or run away Also people generally don’t like playing against spirit, especially before she got nerfed. Its sometimes seen as “toxic” to play spirit because of how her kit works One of my favorites killer mains to watch is probably Otzdarva(aka Not Otzdarva)

The Oni basically is so traditional he is enslaved by it. Kimura on the other hand ignores tradition and makes a name of herself for it.

Both Yamaokas are very very strong... and both work best as ambushers and opportunists.

This isn't fact just a popular theory. The entity wasn't there to take the spirit but her father thats why the survivor has the overworked connection but the spirit begged for vegance

blight and spirit both went and became meta - spirit ability wasnt really shown, she can go into ghost realm, leaving her body standing behind, she cannot see survivors but can hear them and see blood, thanks to several perks she is one of the most mobile killers in game, she was recently nerfed, survivors can now head phasing sound from where she is coming to her, until that nerf you never knew if she was near of you, blight is also extremely movable character - he can rush, hit into obstacles and go like pinball but can still do crazy kills, his perk undying is also very strong, because it makes your hex perk last longer - hex perks are one of the strongest perks in game

Is it bad for me to say that Blight is the basically Octane in DBD. They both inject something into their bodies that grant them super human speed. Though octane has prosthetic legs and Blight doesn’t have a jump pad. Idk just a funny thought. Also to clear things up, the Oni and the Spirit are related. Kazan is Rin’s ancestor and she wields her katana which is a family heirloom. She also has rage like Kazan as seen throughout the lore as she was assaulted and let her rage out and fought her way out of the altercation. DBD lore is very cool.

The Spirit and Oni are indeed connected very deeply, with Rin Yamoaka (Spirit) being the great, great, great (there’s a lot of greats to add here) granddaughter of Kazan Yamoaka. The main focus of their chapters are revolving around family lineage, with Oni’s chapter being called “Cursed Legacy” since he was the one who started his family’s downfall and cursed his family through the generations that followed. (I would say go back to watch lore videos about the Yamoaka’s, their lore is perfection imo, and I highly recommend Spoiled Fruit when it comes to word-for-word lore-reading) This all came to a head with Rin Yamoaka when her father massacred her, subsequently ending the Yamoaka lineage, which is a direct reference to the chapter’s title “Shattered Bloodline”.
