Unreal Tournament 4 might be the apex of Arena Shooting action in the genre. With many content updates at the time and a passionate, talented player base, things were looking up for Unreal Tournament! But sadly with reallocation of staff and increasing neglect towards Unreal Tournament, the game was ultimately abandoned due to the success of Fortnite.
I watched this game die in real time. I still remember signing up to the Alpha of Fortnite Save the World while playing Unreal Tournament 4 extensively with friends. It is a weird feeling for me to say that "Unreal Tournament 4 is abandonware". Could you ever imagine saying that in the UT 2004 times? Would you ever have expected that the franchise that gave Epic Games a household name, would be neglected similar to a bastard child? Incredible, isn't it?
Many people might still play this game and it is VERY enjoyable to frag and dodge flak cannon fire, but you will always have this thought in the back of your head during play, that what you are playing is a skeleton of a great game that will never be finished.
At least we can play it. Just like the other games in the franchise, many people play this game. #RIP_UnrealTournament

So sad that it ended that way. I was super hyped when UT4 was announced and played it for a long time. Back when Quake and Unreal were popular, I was definately a UT guy. The weapons, movement and vivid characters with their countless voice lines were always much more appealing to me. And of course, the legendary announcer, whose iconic quotes are still found in games today! But Quake had one advantage that UT could never make up for: John Carmack.

So much love has been put into Arena Shooters! I wished UT4 didnt end up the way it did. I dont think it would have been the most popular game ever, but it would have its small dedicated playerbase, a bigger one than exists right now. The game showed so much promise years passed! But oh well, we cannot turn back time. And if we did, Epic would have chose to can the project anyhow :/

I wouldn't call fortnite an abomination - they never really intended it to be a cultural phenomenon, but that's how it turned out. The part that really sucks is that now Fortnite is such a massive cash cow for Epic that they've abandoned all other IPs in search of profit, pouring all of their time and assets into the game knowing for a fact that whatever they do, it will still make them millions.

What I really expected from the new Unreal Tournament was to keep the level design as clean as possible, there is no need for high detail in every edge, corner and walls, but they went overboard and added too much pipes, broken stones. Of course it doesn't need to be as simple as this map at 5:31 :D. Simplicity and nostalgic elements are the keys to bring back the glorious old feel of UT99 back.

UT4 is by far the best modern arena shooter out there and for one reason - it is a close to UT99 as it can be as far as weapons and movement. But sadly, this is one of its downfalls as well. Its extremely hard for new players to join the game and get good at it. This game and its movement recreate a game that is 20+ years old. This means that legacy players have a 20 year head-start on new players in a game that you can only get good at with experience. This means new players will have to learn to love loosing to keep playing the game and that is a tough sell.... Anyway, I love the game with a passion and I cannot believe epic has treated it so badly. I have come to resent epic games for this... I still play UT4 but this is only possible because of the fans/community, no credit to epic what so ever ---- Lovely video, thank you for spotlighting this game

Dead games never die!!! ;) As a die-hard UT fan, that's been my motto for years! Regardless of what happens, and which one is our favorite, at least we can enjoy them offline for a quick nostalgia trip, right? And as you covered, some online matches can still be found! But alas, I'm with most people with my disappointment in Epic and how they abandoned their signature and iconic franchise. Though to be honest, I wasn't all that excited with the direction in which they were taking UT4. I thought the movement deteriorated later on. Specifically, it came to feel muddy, floaty, and sluggish. Though the special abilities were great (except the annoying ground slide), the once quick and snappy running movement became dumbed-down because they couldn't figure out how to animate it properly, nor fix issues it caused with the netcode and player replication. And also because they messed with the character model scaling. The first person weapon and hand animations were also pretty insufferable. But I digress. In spite of everything, I played that game for a few years and did enjoy it immensely. I saw its awesome potential at being the best UT to date, with thriving competitive and mod communities. Never lose hope! Valve finally put out a new Half Life game so literally anything is possible lol Nice video, liked and subbed. :)

Dead Games Never Die? That's a motto I can get behind!!! In the end this is why I created this series. Many games are left on the wayside for various reasons... but many times you don't really have a good reason NOT to play a game! Other videos I created in the series are about TOXIKK and AirBuccaneers. TOXIKK being an Unreal Tournament Clone with an ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS artstyle, and the other game being a highly engaging airship battle deathmatch. In the end a game is kept alive by playing it. I guess my outlook on multiplayer games is really romantic. Something about playing and enjoying a game no one played together with your friends is exciting! And I am glad that people like you share my enthusiasm :) Thank you for watching and I am glad you got something out of my production

@@Cheecken true but after the failure of quake champions, and the abandonment of the UT pre alpha, you can probably count on one hand the studios that willing and/or able to take that on. I would like to see something like that but with Epic putting all their attention on Fortnite and the Epic Store I just don't see it happening anytime soon either, the real damning thing for me is that Epic just doesn't want to acknowledge it and honestly wouldn't be surprised if they silently shut it down because they almost act like UT doesn't exist

"Every game in the series is a timeless masterpiece" Eeeh... not so much. Playing UT99 again with friends, and it's really painfully clear - level design flow, audio feedback, gameplay balance... all of these things suffered in the sequels because Epic forgot important lessons with each release (one of the big culprits being - the introduction of more and more prefabs in level design). In fact, if you watch the GDC talk on negative space given by one of the blokes at Epic, discussing the repeated remakes of CTF-Face, you can see that they were well aware that they'd lost a special something along the way; that new technology had not necessarily made for a better game experience. Which is why it's such an utter travesty that they never finished this UT, because it was looking really good. At last, they'd return to a BSP-focused approach to level design; at last, they'd restrained their impulse to visually clutter levels with prefabricated props; at last, they'd taken the time to figure out how the weapons should feel and how the player should move. And then Fortnite came along and spoiled it all. But, on the plus side? UT99 is still alive and kicking. Arguably, it aged the best, and is the easiest to get back into. There are people playing it online, and even with bots it's still fantastic. Grab the DX10 renderer (or DX11 renderer if you're a heretic and want the game to look weirdly shiny and glowy), and download the many, many maps available for it (many of which now push the game's visuals beyond the limitations of PC hardware back in 1999). Personally, my deathmatch list is now about 300 maps long, while I myself have decided to return to the world of map-making, rediscovering how intuitive the old UnrealEd really is.

Would it be possible for modders and the community to finish the game? I mean at least finish what is almost there like the grey box maps, hud elements, player and weapon skins? I am a big fan of the genre and UT was a formative part of my gaming childhood. I want to see this new UT in a polished and finished state so badly it hurts. Someone let me know if there is a community group somewhere looking into getting it done. I am willing to help out in whatever small way I can to see this completed.

If I had known this game was free to play, I would have downloaded it without hesitation years sooner and gotten into these games. But I can't even do that anymore, because they delisted the entire Unreal series off stores. It feels like a part of my youth that was always around the corner (but that I never delved) into has been swept away.

DaVinci Resolve 17, the paid version. The free version is really good and you should just stick to that for the time being. Also if you want to do VFX compositing, you are required to have 16GB of RAM minimum, otherwhise DaVinci won't let you open the VFX compositor.

Played it while it was under development, still play every other UT: UT99, UT2004, UT3. The greatest shame is that, they dont even finished the weapons, the minigun still unfinished. Also, their last patch was just a wrong thing, removeing the fun parts, with ridiclious reasoning. I still believe that a new unreal or UT will come out eventally, but with the current Epic, its troublesome.

What doesnt appeal to the „masses“ anymore is simply learning. A lot of people are looking for instant gradification. If everyone starts in a game with the same abilities you need to learn how to play and you can not rely on some stone paper scissor like special ability or some weapon you unlocked in some matches that makes it easier to get a kill. I think thats why there are less new people jumping in arena shooters. Try Quake Live for instance - you get stomped a lot in the beginning. But when you win your first game it is damn satisfying. I work with kids and I see this all the time - if something is not learnable in an hour, a lot of kids lose interest immediately.

The problem with UT4 is that it was never released. it was in pre-alpha for over 7 years. Epic games just dumped one map and two playable characters then asked the community to finish the game the most half assed attempt at making a video game in history of gaming ! Imagine going to a restaurant, ordering a pizza and getting some flour and tomato sauce, and be told by the waitress to finish making it. Fuck fuck sake i remember that "game" didn't even have any menu

Many ppl think that a lot PC players hate Epic because of the epic game store,in my case my hatred started when they pulled the plug on this game on 2017. me and some of my friends spent so much time designing maps and remaking old ones all for nothing, these mofos had the audacity to involve the community to co-develope the game just to trash all the hard work into the trash just because fortnite. They could have kept a small size team just to guide and advise the community in finishing up the game but no fortnite was it for them.
