Deadly Chickens (2015): Benin's impoverished population survive on imported, cheap frozen chickens from Europe and the US. But relying on cast-off chickens is putting local farmers out of work and posing serious health risks.

In Benin, 150,000 tonnes of foreign poultry passes through the main port every year. For the countries of origin, it is a convenient way to offload tough old hens. While for the people of Benin, the cheap and widely available chicken is a welcome source of meat. "Laying hens are a bit tough for European tastes", says importer Kenneth Adiho, "but we love them". However, the imported meat has dealt a heavy blow to local farmers. Once a profession for young entrepreneurs, Agriculture is now doomed. "The importing of frozen chicken is killing the youth and they will react by flocking to the Western world", predicts one out-of-work farmer. In a country where nearly 50% are under 15 this could have serious implications. Moreover, defrosted, exposed to sunlight, and then refrozen, the poultry risks being infected by bacteria that can cause diseases like salmonella. There is yet to be a national survey on the dangers of the meat and in the markets sanitation inspections rarely take place.

easily said than done. The leaders who try to do something are easily replaced by locals with big help fom the west on the gounds of "dictatorship", "corruption", "war lords", "blood thirsty", and so on...only to end up with bad leaders align with the west that you dont hear on tv due to economic interests. Ask yourself why is Benin still using the Franc CFA as a currency? A currency created and managed by france. If you ask me, people should start creating better living conditions for themselvs, and the whole country will get better. There is only so much that any government can do about it. Not any kind of people. But the rich one and the educated one should take the first step. It doesnt take much to creat a poultry. You just need to make it grow in order to reduce the unitary cost of each chicken/hen.

It's something the US and other countries do where they force a smaller, poorer country into an agreement (like we did with the fruit companies in South American countries) that get them to buy our product duty free, and our product gets sold at a better price than local farmers can keep up with, forcing said country to rely on imports rather than their own domestic product, keeping them poor.

Hey..I take exception to that statement..I raise chickens and they are very well cared for. They are not caged, have a large outdoor paddock in which to roam (I am in a forest and there are many predators), and have an indoor coop area with fresh water, different foods..and lots of places to roost. In cold weather, I cook oatmeal for them and they get fresh veg every day like apples, carrots, greens and squash. The eggs my Rhode Island Reds lay are the size of jumbo eggs in the store without any antibiotics or hormones; and, right now, my meat chickens are in the freezer. In fact, I cooked one yesterday and it was so flavorful, you just knew it was not from the store.

My recipe. Cut the old hen into big pieces. Roast some green chillies and tomatoes until they become mushy. Smash those together into a paste, now put ginger paste and garlic paste, a bit of red pepper flakes mix it all together. Turn the stove on, Put the chicken and all the ingredients in a wok/pan...add salt. Slowly simmer it on medium flame while occasionally stirring it, always with a lid on, After about 20 mins add 2-3 cups of water and some whole or big potato chunks into the dish. Cover and cook until the whole potatoes are done...all on medium flame. Garnish with cilantro or culantro(culantro gives better aroma) and spices. Eat with rice or whatever ur staple is. Thank me later.

I'm constantly astonished by these documentaries on, and my experiences with, Africans and African immigrants who came to the USA. They're such determined, hard-working, genuine people. That guy who sold the frozen chicken was making lots of money for someone in his country, but he's still hoping for better so his country can finally begin working for itself, rather than rely on scraps from other countries. That woman who runs the stall is easily harder-working than most of the people I know over here. I just wish there were better conditions and more quality inspection there. I have no doubt there's a lot of smart, hard-working Benin people who if given the chances we have in the West, could benefit their country with an education in the food sciences.

Joseph Gomalo what hormones? All chicken produced in the U.S. is produced without hormones and has been since the poultry industry began. Free range allows them eat anything in the environment. If there is use of pesticides or herbicides that means the chicken now contains those chemicals that were applied to surrounding land.

Nzm Ak natural selection is utilized throughout the industry to develop the fast growing modern broiler. Natural selection was also used to develop the distinct dog breeds we know today. Combine this broiler with the optimal nutrition given to them through feed and you have a 6-7 pound broiler very quickly.
@maricelamaqueda4100
@maricelamaqueda4100 5 жыл бұрын
Red Sky where and when did this happen? Modern broilers do not need hormones to grow. Studies have shown that growth hormones actually would inhibit their growth and create more work. It just does not make sense.

Being self sufficient is the only way to ensure superior quality of your foot products, and that has to be locally produced. I admire the people of Benin, making things happen and controlling the narrative of their plight. May Allah continue to bless and guide them to success. My Godson returned to his homeland of Benin several years ago. My family and I hear from him often. He too does technology and marketing there. It was a real treat, once a month unless it was a bad month, generally our way to celebrate when the food stamps came in. So the chicken was coming from the mainland somewhere, I think Tyson is located in one of the southern states.

U never generalise Asian, American or European countries. Stop this Africa has more than 50 countries some are not doing well, others are better others are worse.
