I have worn hearing aids since I was in first grade. But at that age, I was fitted with a body aid. That was awful. But, I could hear. Now, I don’t like being without my aids, because my mom was not keen on me learning ASL. She wanted me to be mainstreamed. Relying on speech, hearing and lip reading. The speech and lip reading therapy wasn’t fun ( I never got candy as a reward, just praise...lol)I missed out on activities with other kids. I wished my mom would have insisted I learn ASL. I think she thought it would make my life easier if I never learned it. It didn’t. I still had the same challenges. People would have to repeat themselves often. They would talk behind me as if I could understand what they were saying. Many would mumble or look away when they spoke. Funny thing, whenever I didn’t want to listen to my mom I would pretend I never heard her. Here I am in my 50’s just now learning ASL.😃

I’m an audiologist (still relatively new at my job) so I work with hearing aids all day long. It’s always a fun challenge when someone comes in with a pair of old aids. The oldest pair of hearing aids I’ve worked on were from 2006!

Great discussion. I especially liked how you emphasized that everyone is different and soes what works for them. I wear hearing aids which allow me to hear maybe 75% of what is directed at me. I lost my hearing at 50 and don't have a circle of friends or family who use ASL, so i am dependent on these devices. I do love being able to disconnect them when food shopping or while walking in a noisy city. I feel like it is my little secret. Enjoying your posts.

I am so glad that you guys took the time to talk about hearing aids, I can so relate to breaking my hearing aids, even have taken showers forgetting they were on a few times, one time I “lost” them at an amusement park (they were knocked out while I was in the ball pit) never to be found, another time I was in the local ER and the hospital put me through an MRI (lucky me, even though the HAs were damaged the hospital paid the total cost to replace them both). After college my hearing loss took a huge nose dive and I now have a CI in my left ear and I’m still wearing a HA in the right ear (can’t get a CI for the right ear due to a shunt for hydrocephalus). Soon the CI will completely take over the function of the HA making the HA useless. I’m likely at that moment but I’ll deal with it. But I must say wearing a HA is lots of work, and I can totally relate to a lot of what you were saying Zach, it’s a struggle financially as well as emotionally. It’s a choice not just for you but the whole family. Whatever someone chooses is the right path for them! Thank you for sharing this and being so honest about your journey Zach and Courtney!!!

Thank you for taking the time to do all this. I used to learn song language from the youth minstry I attended. They had a deaf minstry and I would follow along. I aged out of the group and eventually left the church to attend a different one. Unfortunately, I never meet anyone to sign with. I lost a lot of what I learned. It would be nice to learn over again, but like last time, even if I pick up enough to have minimal conversation, I'll eventually lose it again. But God put it on my heart to pick it back up. From some of the videos, looks like you are as well. Keep up the good work, blessings.

I am profoundly deaf as well, new only 4 years , I am 34 And I thought I am strange when I say that with my hearing aids I just hear muffled blur sounds and speach and words don't sound right. It takes so much energy to hear with HA's but everyone around me only speaks and won't learn ASL. So I have to be verbal and read lips, and people get irritated with me when I can't hear through walls. The way you explained how hearing aids work for you made so much sense and makes me feel not alone in my dislike for hearing aids. Thank you for your story, you guys are amazing. I love watching this Because I don't need CC to know what is said. Have a wonderful day 👍🤟

I love watching yalls vlogs. My son is profoundly deaf in his right ear. He's got a BAHA now, just hit 2 years and it's helped so much. We didn't know he was deaf until prek tested him. I won't go into that long story, but sometimes it's incredibly frustrating to explain to teachers and people that just because his BAHA is there does NOT mean everything is fixed. So I understand the muddled sounds and speech etc.. he goes through that a lot.

I wore hearing aid for 3 years. I've had 26 surgeries on my ears and gradually over time my hearing decreased. When I was 30 I wore them for 3 years. Now I'm 35. There was a new surgery avail, so that's why I stopped wearing them. I still miss being able to turn off my hearing. And hearing was so exhausting all my life because I had to concentrate so hard to be able to hear. Now it's not hard anymore but those frustrating feelings still come up for me sometimes because I was always so worried that people would get annoyed by me always say what. My new phone died this week so I pulled out my old phone and have been using it. The first time the alarm went off, it scared the crap out of me because I needed it so loud the last time I used that phone. Haha. I really enjoy watching your guys' channel.

So interesting. Zach's relationship with hearing aids is similar to mine with eyeglasses. I was diagnosed with unilateral astigmatism at 6 and, although it was very light, got prescribed glasses to wear at last during reading. I never really accustomed to them. They feel heavy on my nose and don't even fit on my face. When I was younger I liked to experiment with uncommonly used designs that seemed so cool until I didn't like them no more. And so I kept leaving them everywhere and destroyed more than a pair by sitting or stepping on them. But every time I would go to the optician to get a new pair. I just liked trying on different models, I guess. Then in high school there was a friend of mine who got a nice pair with a transparent frame. I was startled because never thought of such a possibility. They're my lasting ones so far and the most used, too (still using them 20 years later. Left lens has been changed twice to accommodate new eye's needs), although I have to say I use them only when I feel my eyes burning or my sight is blurred. What probably made the difference, apart from a comfier design, was the fact they've been my most expensive glasses ever: so I really had a motivation for handling them with care!

If your hearing aids accidentally gets washed in the washing machine, they can still work. Just don't turn them on right away. Instead open to the battery compartment and place it near a heat source eg a radiator, and let them dry for 3-4 days or a whole week. Then replace the battery and turn them on. I even saved an old fashioned Nokia phone that way.

If anyone deaf or HoH wants to chime in and tell us your experience with them and why you use/don't use your hearing aids, I and I'm sure everyone else subbed to this channel who's not deaf/HoH would be very interested to know ! I think people try hearing aids because they are pressured into at least trying it to see if they'd prefer it by their parents, spouses, etc(I see this as a reasonable thing to do, and should be in no way offensive to the deaf/HoH person, weather or not it is... I wouldn't have the slightest clue); at least give them the opportunity to make an informed decision about it on their own. What I mean is, they want you to at least open the door and take a step through and look before you decide to barricade the door shut and never look back XD I suspect the reason people stop using their hearing aids is because they become more and more accustom to... I don't want to say life as a deaf or HoH person, but I guess, hearing becomes less and less appealing as they become accustomed to life ? if that makes sense ? This channel has such fantastic content, I absolutely love it, keep up the great work and I wish you two all the best !

I prefer not to wear my hearing aids. Too much noise, and the very ironic thing is, I can hear high pitch noises really well, but they give me headaches. But since I am just now learning ASL, I must rely on my hearing aids just to be able to communicate with people. The other reason why I don't like my hearing aids, is since there's a mold in the ear blocking air from getting in, I get ear infections from that. It's annoying. I am so content and at peace running around without my hearing aids.

Hi! I was wondering what both of you think about interpreters having tattoos? What do you think Courtney as an interpreter yourself, and what does Zach think? Are they disturbing in any way?
@OurSignedWorld
@OurSignedWorld 5 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, Courtney here, I always err on the side of caution. I have a tattoo but it is on my back. Some Deaf people are okay with tattoos showing, others are not, and it can be very distracting to some, especially if they are Deaf/Blind. It's also important to remember that most companies and agencies will require you to cover up any visible tattoos. I want a half sleeve but probably won't ever do it for those reasons. Zach likes tattoos but believes its important to respect each Deaf persons needs.

I would not see any point in using hearing aids if I could not hear anything clearly or just a few loud things with hearing aids. I find it hard and draining and like all the sounds take over my brain and subtract from my other abilities and senses when I have used hearing aids. I'm more on the hearing side of the curve, but now I don't understand speech language anymore bc of brain fatigue and sign language deprivation (hearing people refusing to use interpreters and forcing me to lipread and read and write all the time instead, until my brain broke even more).

I'm starting to get really bummed that after a quick ad the captions will be disabled. It's happened in several videos now. Not sure if there's anything y'all can do but it seems to be a thing happening often on your videos only.

hey, zack would you laugh if someone came up to you and started signing in simple asl and then halfway through they just randomly sign "I am slow wow."?

I would never laugh at them. That is normal. I want people to have a safe environment to practice and learn sign language, if I laugh they may feel insecure. I always tell people its okay and not be afraid but to keep going.
