This is exactly why I completely lost my confidence in driving. Due to small beginner mistakes (stalling at a stop light or similar) i was honked at, yelled at and called an imbecile woman who can't drive to save her life. Don't know why I let it affect me. This video really helped! You seem very warm, supportive and caring. Thanks for your efforts!

Got abuse off someone today for not taking a right turn gap because of a clutch issue (turning onto a 60mph road!). Your right, its a part of driving and you have to accept that, we are dehumanised on a massive scale when we're in metal boxes.

With road rage if you prepared to mouth off you need to accept the violence that can often come with said road rage. So if you not a fighter keep it moving as there can be serious consequences even death far better just to shrug it off and go about your day.

I was on my 5th driving lesson today. After seeing my dad be a victim a few really bad cases of road rage I was terrified of it. It happened to me today and I had a panic attack so my instructor had to help me pull over on the edge of the motorway. I don’t take the abuse personally but it really frightens me. Those people were learners too once. They just seem to forget. I know it’s going to happen again. I just worry it will happen when my instructor is not there to help me.

Had my driving practical test today (4th October) at 9:00am, glad to say I passed first time at 17 thanks to my instructor and many of your videos. I have recommend you to various people I know. Please keep doing these videos as it really helped me in my journey😊

I had my first lesson yesterday. First 2 hours of driving. I am a quick learner and we actually managed to get onto normal roads and do normal driving (with some mistakes obviously) .... it's actually shocking how people behave on the road. I was doing the speed limit and still flowing with the traffic but it was honestly ridiculous - trucks, vans, cars overtaking on a 20mph, beeping, waving.

This man is a saint, the amount of information i have learned as a learning driver is insane, i just want to say thank you if you're reading this sir. God bless 🤝🏻

This is hands down the best video I've watched on driving, and something that should be taught when getting the license. Instead, my instructor told me things like "you know, if you take this much time parking, they're gonna eat you when you're out there on the road". Became a self-fulfilling prophecy and I've recently had someone honk at me aggressively for...taking my time to parallel park in a really tight spot. I felt really defeated and like an idiot that shouldn't drive or park because they can't be quick. This video really helped and I'll heed the advice, as I do think I'm a good driver. Sure, a little hesitant, but ...better safe than sorry. Thank you so much!

Thank you Richard. I've only just passed and I'm aware that this is going to happen to me eventually. It's wise advice to not internalise their anger and instead realise that there's something far more fundamental going on for them in their lives. As a solo female driver, I would always lock my doors and if I find myself unable to move away from the scene because they've blocked me in and they're attempting to get at me and my car, I would call 999.

I've been driving for some years now and there are times when I get these flashbacks of past encounters with people who've exhibited road rage. It does dwell on me quite a lot.

I only have to be pootling along minding my own business to annoy other drivers as I have a teeny smart car and they don't like being behind one even though I'm doing the speed limit. Scarey having them close behind as they are literally just over my shoulder! I enjoy your videos even though I passed my test in 1991, I found your channel when searching for tips for driving an automatic and found your excellent video how to drive an automatic which helped so much.

Unbelievably helpful video. I needed this after just getting furious at a tailgating, undertaking speeding, chavy woman who cut me off to get 2 seconds faster ahead than me. She's an idiot and me getting angry won't change anything. I should record the footage and send it to the police, not speed up and be an idiot too. "Most of the time their reaction stems from other frustrations in their life..." This is so true about me. I will learn to become more like you mate, thanks for the advice.

This is so helpful. I passed my test 8 months ago and have certainly experienced road rage and a lot of tailgating. If someone honks a horn and I’ve made a mistake, it doesn’t bother me but I am definitely learning to have to ignore abuse. Sometimes I know I’m more sensitive so choose not to drive those times.

Patience is a virtue! It's all very well knowing how to control a machine, but controlling your own limbs and emotions is another skill altogether.

There's an increasing share of impatient drivers around here in California. The weird thing is that out of all the people I could potentially tick off on the road (pedestrians, cars crossing at intersections, even passengers), the driver behind is the only one that makes me anxious, even though they are probably the _least_ important from both a safety and social perspective. Giving into their impatience goes against my driving values but I still do it. Maybe there's something primal about being followed closely from behind that makes it seem more threatening than any other situation on the road.

Finally passed today with 5 minor faults. Really looking forward to the freedom and mobility now. Was really nervous in the lead up to my test, but these videos massively helped to embed some of the understandings and principles around driving and some of the more awkward situations you might encounter. A combination of driving lessons with my instructor and playing these videos back in between lessons and driving without instructor was a great way to learn how to drive over the past year. Big thanks for all the advice and videos you do and have recommended your channel to others. Best of luck to all learning to drive and keep safe out there.

Thanks for the reminder of that sort of mindset. Really helps with driving and everyday life. I also like going by the saying 'their problem not mine' if others flare up at me and then tell them have a good day, just to annoy them and hoping it makes them feel bad for being mean :p

It’s really kind of you teaching soft skill like this. In my city there are females drivers get abused or less experienced drivers get abused by commercial drivers A LOT! I’m by no means the perfect driver, nobody is, but honestly, a lot of people shouldn’t be driving, sometimes I think to myself how on earth did they pass their driving test and get their driving license, before I was the type of person to get mad at someone who made a mistake but after almost being beaten up you learn to keep your thoughts and your comments to yourself, I work in a shop so I know how nasty some people can be, it’s much safer than much better to ignore their mistakes and just smile and wave 👋 🙃

Passed my test a few months ago but still look forward to your videos each week. Invaluable advice! It's true what they say, once you pass your test, the learning really starts. Road rage and generally rude drivers are something I seem to come across a lot, and I'm sure it's because I am still using P plates. My husband, who has been driving 15+ years, even notices the difference when using the car with them still on (having forgotten to take them off when he's driving). What some people don't seem to realise is that myself and many other "new" drivers have actually been on the road for nearly 2 years now, we just kept getting tests rescheduled due to Covid!

From what i noticed "experienced" drivers value speed over safety.

As someone who is learning to drive, I have not experienced abuse from another road user yet. Although, even if I do... I will take it as a learning opportunity and not get affected in any ways. If they want to do it, then fine... but they are only going to either feel bad later and realize it was a pointless event that they created which benefited neither sides which will only affect them afterwards. Which can also make them sleepless and dwell on it.

That intro was funny!! I got it on Tuesday, I'd been to Tesco in Peebles and was ready to turn out onto Edinburgh Road, there was a truck coming at a leisurely pace, Just as I was ready to go, there was time, I spotted this white car roaring down the road like the clappers. My first thought was it's going to overtake, the woman was blasting her horn and flashing her lights, and I could see her in the mirror, mouthing something I'm not going to type on here. She couldn't see what I'd seen. She shut up quick sharp when the white car roared past, yes I got it right it overtook. My apology will be in the post!!

Letting it go for a better day , your summing up spot on R. Sums this up well…. Driving to work post road rage will wind one up till lunch. Letting it go lasts that few seconds and a good ponder later.

This is also applies to parking lot rage, supermarket rage, bar rage, going for a walk in the park rage, and workplace rage. 😂😂😂

Great video as always. I think something else that’s worth considering is that certain parts of the UK have drivers that are generally a bit more ‘horn happy’ than others elsewhere - London is the obvious one, you can get abuse for quite minor hesitations there that elsewhere (eg rural backroads) would be pretty much completely ignored. This is just geographical/cultural difference. That said, I think it’s always worth considering if there’s anything you could improve on for the future in situations such as these - not blaming yourself as such, just considering if you can prepare more for next time. It might be that there’s nothing to learn and that you just met someone having a very bad day, but there may still be something to note from it.

Good video. Taking a deep breath always helps. If someone gets angry with me, I like to just wave and smile. That might not help with their road rage, but calms me down. Also... have you ever seen a Miata driver having a road rage? 😁 If more folks drove Miatas, we all would have a much nicer driving experiences. 😊

I am old , experienced , European, UK advanced , and professional driver and see abuse and selfish driving everywhere. I have a simple cheap car and still get past 60. 000£ German sports cars in my city by simply looking ahead and positioning myself better and spotting hazards early.( admittedly it would be more difficult but achievable in a city where i don't know the road layout). That skill can be learnt and does not cost any money. I now get other drivers cpoying my positioning and style as they itice their stupid overtaking / passing is less successful than my driving. So funny. People have not realised that an expensive car does not come with a brain😅 Reading Road ahead is a Learnable skill and more reliable than any electronic aid.

Tricky one. I’m better than others naturally ( former work colleague terrible red mist, got out threatened beat people up. Christ. ). Essential skills and defensive driver training helped further to keep me calm on roads. . With this and making space for bad drivers it doesn’t really happen. I’d say this is a long learning curve. Hours and hours. Found only by going through ADi. Can image many will never be able sort this problem out. Hard one Richard. Hard to get it out system if you have it. Tricky is the word.

I've been driving a month, and so far I've had one incident where I annoyed a driver, and I knew I was in the wrong. He gave me a "wtf you doing?" gesture which I saw in my mirror, at which I put my hand up to apologize, he put his hand up to accept the apology, and that was that. I checked with my fiancé, who has been driving for 20 years and has a SEVERE case of road rage, and she agrees that if she ever gets pissed off at someone, an apology gesture will completely defuse her. I've even heard it a few times along the lines of "WHAT THE **** ARE YOU..... oh ok he said sorry I'll let him off" 😂😂 Besides that, the best way I've found to avoid road rage is to get a front and rear dashcam and have a good laugh with your friends at all the crazy stuff that you manage to capture 😂😂 granted I've only been driving a short period of time, but I live in Spain and unfortunately it seems that a massive portion of road users are both ignorant to how to drive properly, and also highly aggressive in their ignorance

My first time out on the roads after 4 years, I got violently cut across and brake checked by someone who thought that driving at the max speed limit for the road I was on was not enough for them. I've since shrugged off the shock, but it tainted a genuinely great experience.

Thank you for this great video, I needed to watch this after another car decided to target me and shake his fist aggressively (he was speeding coming up behind me- 2 lanes, I was in slower lane he was in fast lane, I have no idea why he was claiming I was in the wrong). I'm always open if I've been in the wrong and don't like beeping people when they are in the wrong) I reacted by swearing at him as he was so aggressive but I realise he's won now as I'm the one still thinking about it! Thank you for your advice, I'm going to practice not retaliating

I had my first experience of road rage today. I made a mistake and apologised but the guy still stopped traffic just to scream all sorts at me. Really shook me up. I think some level of road rage awareness or anger management should be included in the learning process. Even if it’s just part of the theory test. Driving is hard enough without people hurling abuse.

This is driving in America on a daily basis. People will honk the second a light turns green. Or cut in front of you only to get ahead by 1 car. Its sad. I just keep my cool and go on with my day!

Had a truck roll up on me this morning going way fast, considering I already had my cruise set to 7 over the speed limit. Drivers around here are all nuts, all I could see was his grill in rear view my mirror, was pretty distracting but I wasn't upset at that point. I was on cruise, when he couldn't get room to pass me I tried to increment my speed up a little, thinking whatever his issue was, he would be happier if I gave him the speed he wanted to go, but he stayed on my butt. I gave up on the cruise and reached for the gas pedal to accelerate a bit more, but clipped the brake pedal, instead with the edge of my shoe. Now I looked like an arse who just brake checked this guy and I panicked because he almost hit me and I had to get on the accelerator to make space so he didn't. He then started chasing me, I panicked even more, people around here get shot and run off the road by ragers, so I tried to get away at first, but speeds were getting dangerous and I was just making the situation worse, so I slowed back down, when he caught up, he flew past me in a no passing zone then pulled in front of me and slammed the brakes on. Fair enough, I was fine with that considering what I just did to him and thought we were done. But then, he tried to force me to stop. I wanted nothing to do with what ever confrontation this guy had in mind so I checked that traffic was clear and started passing him, he moved over at me like he was going to ram me in the door as I passed him, then changed his mind, I sped up only enough to keep him behind me then used traffic so he had no room to go around me again unless he passed other cars too, while I calmed myself down and tried to think through what I was going to do next if he tried to hit or stop me again. Police station was only a few miles down the road so I turned and started heading there. I stuck to safe speeds but kept a close eye on him behind me, he followed me for a bit then pulled a U turn and went the other way. 1/2 mile down the road there was an officer already had someone pulled over. would have stopped there, if that guy was still after me. Brake check was an accident but who was going to believe that? Wouldn't have been an issue anyway if he was at a safe following distance. We both would have just thought I was an idiot and would have went about our day. Instead, I'm sitting at work now with frayed nerves looking up videos for better ideas on handling road ragers.

With the comment made about the delay before your response, this is known as the Stimulus/Response technique and there's a gap in between there. The gap is your thinking time and you can take as long as you need to before you respond. Sometimes it's better to agree with the individual and accept that we all make mistakes. "Yes, you're right. I made a mistake at this moment. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I'll do my best to make sure it won't happen again." would be an appropriate response to this. Another appropriate comeback would be to ask the individual if they're OK? It can quickly disarm the situation and stop that individual in their tracks.

Hi Richard! Any chance you could do a video on multi storey car parks? Every time I go into one I always feel like it's going to go horribly wrong with the tight ramps and narrow spaces
