Parenting author, educator and resilience specialist Maggie Dent chats about the challenge of sibling rivalry. Maggie talks about why sibling rivalry is biologically normal, how to see this rivalry as a 'teachable moment' and unplugs the most common responses parents choose: time out and punishment. Maggie unplugs these reactions and looks at what they teach children -- and how our own issues with our siblings can influence how we respond as a parent.

My family just got into an argument and almost a possible deadly fight. I don’t think I’ll be seeing them ever again.

Thankyou Maggie. I wish I had discovered you sooner. My kids are no longer teens. I love your common sense approach. I have to admit there were times when I would send all my kids outside (in a safe enclosed back yard/courtyard area) because they were way too noisy and arguing and just being obnoxious. Actually I would lock the door so they couldn't just decide to come straight back inside! It was timeout for me and it seemed to make them stop and think. I used to feel a bit guilty about it, thinking I was a bad parent, but nothing else seemed to work. Thank you for letting me know it was ok to do that. They don't seem scarred by the experience...they laugh about it now. There were 4 of them so noise levels could be over the top.

If your siblings are fighting with you, you should tell your parents. Parents play an important role in disciplining their children for their mistakes.

Sibling rivalry can gradually decrease as we get older since we'll learn more about social skills.

For example, if we're arguing about which game to play, we can make a vote with our siblings and the majority wins, which means the biggest voted group would be chosen to play the game.

When voting for something and we didn't get our expectations, then we have to learn to compromise and follow the "majority-wins" plan, so that the situation would be fair. Maybe can we suggest the group to follow our plans afterwards.

This usually happens when we're younger because we still don't know social skills well. However, we'll master our social skills as we get older. However, parents and teachers can teach us social skills.
