In this 'Maggie Moment', Australian parenting author, educator and resilience specialist Maggie Dent talks about challenging childhood behaviours. Maggie looks at what might be behind things such as hitting, biting or running away. She discusses the role of the brain in triggering this behaviour and offers up strategies for parents and carers in dealing with this type of behaviour in the moment and de-escalating situations.

I told my 4 year old dear boy the 3 step rule from ‘mothering our boys’ today and he said, ‘why can’t I hurt myself?’. (Try not to hurt yourself, others or the world around you). I said, ‘well you can, but you might not like it!’

Thanks for sharing Maggie. This definitely works at home however what do you suggest when you are talking to clients and they hit you because they are not happy (I.e. they want my attention)?

Hi Maggie, he is 4 years old. I can see now that it is when he is angry and doesn't know how to control the feeling.

This is really helpful. What do you do though if your child is hitting many times throughout the day - I mean literally all day long. My son just turned two and he seems to get into a pattern every once in a while where he cannot seem to stop himself from hitting all day long. Hitting me, hitting my husband, hitting our younger son, our cats. It’s like he becomes obsessed with it for a week or so then the impulse goes away for a while. I try to keep calm and just tell him I won’t let you hit, but he is so out of control all day long. I don’t know what to do in this sort of case.

I should mention that this seems to occur mainly when we travel or when my husband needs to travel for work and is away. So clearly he seems sensitive to normal routines being thrown off and missing his dad, things that destabilize him.

Hi @Shelley. It sounds like you're on the right track with working out this behaviour. Here's a clip from a Q&A we ran a little while ago where Maggie addresses this topic: www.maggiedent.com/blog/child-hits-mum-9-things-qa-oct-2016/

What can I do when I am wearing my baby in a carrier? I have been doing these hugs when baby is not in the carrier, I do think its good for my little rooster boy. But many hours of the day I am wearing his little sister in a baby wrap and there are moments I wish I could do the hug but cannot. Any tips? I desperately want to support him.

It is so tricky isn't it. Especially when you have another little bubba in a carrier. Have you read Maggie's book about the power of micro moments? That offers some helpful tips and just remember, this really young stage where your daughter is in the carrier will pass and you will have greater capacity in time. You're doing great. - www.maggiedent.com/blog/love-bridges-why-micro-moments-connection-matter/
