A big of old tools, but also very well used tools.
Only a few of these worth fixing. A lot of old tools in it but most would not be worth spending any more money on.

Bosch GBH 2 SR
Bosch GWS 7-115
Hitachi G12SR
Bosch GWS 9-115S

I was watching a Iraq war documentary. The EOD techs (bomb squad) got very emotionally attached to their robots. There are stories about how they had to find parts to fix their robot. They didnt want a new one but just their robotic partner fixed.

That Bosch was my drill of choice before I went cordless in 2004. I once drilled through a metre thick church wall with one of those. Great drill, but I don't miss lugging the transformer and extension around.

Thanks for explaining the job site 110V system. I thought it is just normal common ground 110V, and didn't understand why the marginal added safety would be worth the hassle. But this 55V split solution actually makes a lot of sense and should indeed be significantly safer.

Its just a regulation thing, ireland only does this because of the UK. In france the transformers are 24v and used mostly for lighting and rarely, if ever, used unless you're inside a steel tank in the rain. Most countries don't even bother, the equipment its already class II(insulated housing) also the 30ma RCD/gfci will pop if ever something bad happens.

After watching a few of your videos I remembered that in the darkest part of my shed I had an old (2009) non working Makita (9557nb) grinder. I dug it out & plugged it in, It was the 1980's rave scene all over again. One new armature & a set of brushes later & the old girl is as good as new, thanks for giving me the confidence to give it a go.

Thanks for explaining the wiring of a transformer. That was super interesting. It would be great if you could do a video on that. Why are transformers used? While the voltage may be lower, the amperage is higher. I find it hard to understand why that's better than higher voltage, lower amperage. That said, thanks to this video, I see there are safety features on a transformer that are not on a domestic 230 volt circuit.
@dd313car
@dd313car Ай бұрын
They are used for safety against electric shock. A voltage about 50(55) V AC is not as dangerous as 240 V or even 110 V. Construction sides are a high risk area, wet, dusty, cable in danger of cuting or smashing etc. There are special requlations for electric safety required, these type of transformers are one of them. RCD-protection also

Dean could you make one video about 110v transformers, which one you are using and which one newer are safe to use for cheapest money? Are you using Blakley, Sealey or something else? Is it mandatory to use 100% more power on the transformer than the device power rating?
@dd313car
@dd313car Ай бұрын
Draper and Defender offers good side transformers, 2 x 110 V outlets each and with a rating for 3300 VA (simplify 3300 Watts) Less power is not recommended, e-tools need a power reserve for inrush current when tools powerd on and at hard duty.

I remember talking to a guy who installed and maintained milking parlours and there was a company who made very reliable milking machines which very seldom broke down, the problem was the company didn't make a lot of money on repair and parts so the company introduced as "new and improved" parlour and didn't make it as reliable, the he guy said that he was taking out perfectly good parlours and installing the new less reliable Parlour because the sales reps for the company told the farmers that new was better, they also stopped selling replacement parts for the old parlour so they had to be replaced

Purpose of isolation transformer is to separate mains power supply,it doesn’t use ground in my country (we use German standards like most Europe countries).It’s safe to touch live wire on secondary side (output) of isolation transformer and they are only used for safety,no step down or up voltage,output is same 230V/400V.

So the last grinder running at 55v through the earth, could they have done that on purpose because they were going to be using the grinder for an extended time and they didn't want it to over heat? I'm just trying to work out why they designed the transformers to even have that option?!?!?

I have never heard of it being any form of legal requirement to use 110v tools. We only ever used 230v but it is safer so some workshops certainly used 110v. Out on sites it depended on what was available. That said, even with a constructionsite management qualification I'm not involved anymore other than my own projects and those for family.
@deandohertygreaser

Nit allowed on a site here with any 230v tools. All 110v only. Some are becoming even more strick now. All leads and cables banned. Some site only allow cordless tools to be used.

I always thought that SPIT drills were rebranded Bosch drills & the Fein SDS drills look like even today are rebranded Bosch or am I mistaken? I still got my 110v Bosch SDS from late 80s early 90s & even now I think it drills better than most modern SDS drills, there is something about how the Bosch SDS system works (I know they invented it) that just makes them faster & more efficient. It's a shame SPIT is now part of Paslode, because Paslode is an absolute pile of shit to deal with much like their nails guns IMO.

17:41 If it wasn't worn as much as this one, do you recommend cleaning it with a lathe or sandpaper as seen in this example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pahdm5Cnv8mado0.html ? What are the pros and cons?
@michaelfairchild
@michaelfairchild 2 ай бұрын
Lathe will possible destroy the armature. Sandpaper is the lesser option, but try first using a rag dipped in acetone to try to clean the contacts.
@Xrayfk05
@Xrayfk05 Ай бұрын
@@michaelfairchild When brushed motors were still used in remote control car racing we used to true the comm on a mini-lathe all the time. The comm doesn't just get dirty but also out of round causing the brushes to bounce. After turning the comm the motor was as good as new. (or better actually). In other words it can be done, but for these applications it's not worth the effort.
@Grahammon
@Grahammon Ай бұрын
It used to be common to see articles in books and magazines on restoring worn armatures (pre KZfaq) using a lathe to true up a worn commutator. Using an abrasive is not nearly as accurate, you risk abrading some parts more than others ending with a cleaner though none flat surface, compounded with the risk that particles may come separated from the backing and become embedded in in the commutator increasing brush wear. I agree with @Xrayfk05 excepting whether it is worth the effort, I think it probably is, in that the armatures can cost a lot and a simple truing of the commutator can completely fix the issue (though this one was well worn) and give an old tool a new lease of life, putting off the very expensive armature purchase, why not, if it’s going in the bin anyway?

@shifty277
@shifty277 Ай бұрын
Usually it is doing the customer a disservice. If the unit is out of its warranty period and Dean issues a bill of 80% of the retail cost of a new unit with potentially a 3 year warranty if registered in the first 30 days it's a no-brainer to keep the old one as a spare for parts and get a brand new one. Dean will probably have his percentage threshold of repair cost versus a new retail unit
@deandohertygreaser
@deandohertygreaser Ай бұрын
Like shitty277 says. Repair is not always economicaly viable. Plus if the repair price is to high, the customer will simply refuse to pay for it, amd will simply abandon the machine. Which would then leave me out of pocket.
