There has been many cases where gay people are outed against their will for various of different reasons; whether it's because of blackmail, or their "friends" babbling to everyone, or their principal/counselor telling their parents, etc. It's horrible that this happens, but this movie did a great shedding some light on this issue. Especially the scene where Simon is yelling at Martin, it was a very powerful scene that showed that it was up to him to decide on when, where or how he should come out.

The book that this is based on called Simon Vs. The Homosapien Agenda Simon it went a lot more in depth about Simon trying to figure out who Blue was he didn't think it was just every single guy he met that could possible match something the email said it made a lot more sense and was sweeter also there was more development of character not just Simon and I really do recommend the book. Although the book still does have the blackmail angst. Also I loved this video!

The way his parents react feels so important. I cried a lot at the film, both sad and happy, because it felt so real to me, the way people react to him coming out. Especially his parents.

Love your reviews!! I completely agree with you; Martin really brought this movie down but everybody else and the message brought it back up. This movie is everything I could ever want from a teen LGBT movie. Can’t wait for more movies like this to come!

I am so glad I found this channel. You make really good content. I would love to see a video on Sara Lance from the arrowverse. They have a few lgbtq characters on there which is nice.

Congratulations! I'm so glad you hit a new growth milestone with your channel, you definitely deserve it. It feels to me like this is something that suits you, at least based on everything I've watched so far. I still haven't seen Love Simon but it seems it's exactly what I expected it to be. And yes... Keiynan Lonsdale is incredibly charming and attractive so no shame on that ;) PS: I just wanted to leave a comment congratulating you so no need to enter me on the contests, I've already won something and I would rather other people get a chance at winning as well.

I think the issue is whilst indeed Blackmail is a crime reporting it to the police is likely to just make things worse as the information would get out anyway.

I agree so much with you on this movie! like I saw it and I was so happy for all the younger lgbt+ kids that will see it! (but for a good part of the movie I had the ENORMOUS fear that Dickhead was gonna be Blue, like "i'm a homophobe because i'm secretely gay"? I was so releaved at the end)

I really feel the "Simon should have known better and gone to the police" part was pretty bad. The whole point of going along with it was not only to protect himself but also Blue, who he knew was in the closet too. Simon was selfish when he tried to keep his friends from dating so that he could complete Martin's task, but I can't blame him. Also there is nothing that says telling someone, which means outing himself and it was something he wasn't ready for yet, wouldn't stop Martin from doing what he did anyways. Simon felt like he had no other choice but to trust this asshole who now has a grip on him.

Ah Jess, this was so good! I also loved the movie and totally agree with you on everything you said. I thought it would have been cute to have Leah also be gay/bi/queer, but the straights would probably have complained that it was unnecessary or over the top *eye roll* P.S. I loved seeing your face at the end in all its unscripted glory :)

The film is based on a book in which the blackmail happens, and if you took out that aspect of it, it wouldn’t be a film version of the book. What you seem to want is a movie based on some other book that doesn’t exist. And, to be honest, I think Simon does grow more confident and is heading toward coming out anyway.

I always try to select a favourite addition when a film is made of a book. Here, alas, the only addition I really liked was the deleted scene in which Supermom gets her bubble burst, telling Simon she'd been spending the evening researching LGBTQ groups and having him finally explode, "WE are not gay!" That the actress insisted on having a Supermom scene written in - the one you loved - when Doofus Dad was even exaggerated was one of my biggest cons - such a stereotype! The film plays up the idea of Women's Having Almost All the Emotional Intelligence rather too much.

seto749 I can't comment on the mom, I don't watch deleted scenes or pay attention to what actresses do or not, I take the work as presented to me (though it sounds like I might have liked that scene as well). But from what I could see in the film is that she cared for her son enough to tell him that he was ok, and everything's going to be okay in time. Nothing wrong with that. Question, why was the father a "doofus"? He was an intelligent man, not very good with technology, most of that generation to a tee lol... that doesn't mean he or any of them are less smart. I would also say that the dad is actually pushing back against stereotypes more than he is one, men in most movies aren't emotional, they don't cry, they don't say outright that they're wrong, they rarely listen to other's feelings. And this character does all of that which is wonderful, he was a well rounded human being. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either scene would have been fine alone. The combination is galling, especially as the early part hints that both parents are at least partly inept (maybe the best addition from the book is that Mumsy misspells "Patriarchy" on her protest sign). I can see the point behind showing a range of good responses, but put them up against each other. She ever-so-wisely has always known there was something bothering Simon and gives what is clearly intended to come across as the perfect response. He does provide the positives you mention, but the writers make him undercut them by being such an idiot, not knowing that he's suggesting they join a hook-up site together. Again, either scene alone is fine. In combination, I wish they could have found a way to reverse the scenes, as that would have counteracted a lot of the heavy-handed message, "Women Are Wonderful/Men Are Clowns" running through the film. The deleted scene would have done a good deal to explain why Simon didn't come out earlier, but it would have shown Supermom making a mistake, being too earnest and going too far too fast. The film mother is an improved version of the book mother, while the film father is much more inept than the book father (the inappropriate jokes are greatly increased, for one thing). Almost all the changes flow the same way. Abby has to teach Simon "how to be gay" (a scene the director LOVED); the Leah-Simon balance is shifted to give her the more dignified position; Martin is turned from a geek to much more of a jester; Nick loses his emo edge and becomes a bit of a buffoon as well, though a kind one to make it conceivable Abby would like him; the male principal, completely invented, is a grating, walking Bad Joke; the female drama teacher goes from good to superheroine, etc. It almost makes one wonder whether we're expected to laugh at the out gay boy. It may be partly a mitigating factor that this is the film the director wanted to see when he was in his teens (at least that explains the slightly dated feel). Bram seems to stay pretty much the same. Cal is greatly clarified by the director's cut. From watching the film alone, one could think that they just decided to downplay Cal's interest to make him a potential Blue. But the director implies he saw Cal as straight, so that, in the reversed guessing scene, "he's not insulted, and he's being so kind and concerned," or something to that effect.

nick robinson was a perfect choice for this movie. i dont get why his real life sexual orientation has anything to do with the character itself. hes not playing himself. he is playing a character. there are gay actors that play straight roles. you going to complain about them? at the end of the day a real life person is not a character so what they are in real life is irrelevant to the situation.
