but the acting here also helps - the passive aggressiveness and meg's insincere warmth was not very obvious in the australian production, which made it a bit more shocking when meg and her mom were revealed to hate christine here in this production, meg very obviously rolls her eyes in annoyance at christine HAHA very effective

The interesting thing about this song is how it showcases how both Christine and Meg have changed over the past 10 years…and how they are both completely miserable but trying to hide it from each other. Christine may look ‘Regal as a Queen’ but she is trapped in a failing marriage separated from music which she loves. And Meg might be a ‘Star’ but she’s a star of a vaudeville show trying to get the attention of a Man who will never want her. I also find it funny how Christine is the only one in this song who actually seems sincere like she’s not trying to ruin it for Meg, she’s just trying to appease the Phantom so she can go home (with some money). Later on we know she does it because she wants to sing for him, but her attention was never to steal the spotlight from Meg…but Meg has been so beaten down at this point and is just so desperate for some recognition from Erik she sees the writing on the wall right away and then the jealousy sets in.

the song is good the harmonies are great BUT THE CHARACTERS ARE NOT THE CHARACTERS! if you link this to phantom of the opera, you need to at least mantain the character development that started there. Or maybe explain??????????? Like when did meg started hating Christine??????????? because of jealousy?????????? oh andrew what did you do
@southernstar24124 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, then maybe you should check out Meg from the Aussie version, I like her there more in terms of character and vocals. In the Aussie version, Meg has a segment where she sings about how excited she is to hear that Christine would come to Coney Island, even says she'll show her the amusement park and many other beautiful sights; also in the finale, Aussie Meg is more mentally unstable, jealous sure, but in that version, she didn't meant to shoot her beloved friend, is was an accident, Erik tried to snatch the gun and she pulled the trigger reflexively, she seem very heartbroken and regret about it too, at least that's what I've gathered; which I think fits much more into Meg's character. But still, this version has Ramin and Sierra, so I still love it much more.
@larissaprates13844 жыл бұрын
* SouthernStar I will definitely give it a try. I also looked up the German version of the show and it looks beautiful! Rachel Anne More is my second favorite Christine and shes in that too! I mean there were so many changes in the original one, and then the Australian one... I feel that even ten years later, if it still hits the broadway theaters it will be different from what we’ve seen
@psionicdreamer33024 жыл бұрын
@@larissaprates1384 oh it already came through america, I saw it in rhode island and it was good though "beauty underneath" was changed entirely. But yes the whole things with meg (that was mostly cut from the play but is important to know) that for 10 years the whole reason phantom got phantasma and was able to grow so big so fast was because Meg was sleeping with the press, cops and tax men. She literally gave her body blood and soul to phantom and grew to love and respect him, not caring about his face. But he never once SAW her. Which is why when he sings to her at the end she so easily stops freaking out and listens to him. She loves him, she just wants attention and recognition then christine comes back and ruins everything. It literally broke her. It's not just jealousy, it's self hatred and abandonment.
@larissaprates13844 жыл бұрын
daecromancer ahhh this enlightens everything else! At the end she mentions something about all the man, but I didn’t know it was in that magnitude. Do they explain it better in the us tour? And what changed in beauty underneath?
@psionicdreamer33024 жыл бұрын
@@larissaprates1384 unfortunately they didnt explain it better in the u.s tour. It was a much better known plot point in the original london script. In one of the original cast recorded songs you hear madame giry say something like "there is a man looking for you, a mister- *name i forget*" and meg looks up and says "is he important?" Cuz in the original london recording what shes done is more apparent but it also requires reading subtext. Well in the u.s beauty underneath, id just look it up to listen to the song. They put in different lyrics and the notes are all a lower pitch, darker and more metal. Its jarring to listen to the old version then the U.s version but it grows on you.
