**after another important meeting about inheritance plans and marriage arrangements** King: **turns to his son and heir after dismissing his nobles** Well...shall we retire to our estates and barely talk to each other for years save for business purposes. Also let's NOT spend any father and son bonding time together, I don't think we have ANYTHING in common anyway. Crowned Prince: Sounds good and I promise that I'll *continue to NOT plot to stab you in the back and remove you from power* if I see a chance to inherit the throne a lot sooner than if I waited for old age and nature to finally do you in...my... most beloved father... King: Ah! bring it in my biological and acknowledge son! Crowned Prince: Say no more my biggest political rival and obstacle that is also my biological father! (as far as you know..) **awkward father son hug**

@NaViLlUs cIrE King: Looks over at his other child, who isn’t the crown prince: Ah, my other son who I barely acknowledge! I will pretend like I care about you and your brother equally so I don’t like a horrible father, but we both know I only care about the crown prince. The child: Oh, don’t worry father, I will definitely NOT *plot to murder my older brother to inherit the entire kingdom* instead of waiting for him to die of natural causes without an heir. King: Well, I would hug you, but you aren’t the heir so I’ll just ignore your existence.

I been searching for years - YEARS - for the video to finally explain to me why monarchies are determined through bloodline rather than merit! Like, it legit makes so much sense now! I couldn't fathom why so many cultures only cared about the ruler's bloodline rather than someone's wisdom in leadership. But now, finally I have a better understanding and visual grasp of all the motivating factors!
@ZttackFrmBhind
@ZttackFrmBhind 2 жыл бұрын
There is also the benefit that the Monarch's child/ children are able to be trained from birth to lead a country instead of having to spend their formative years learning how to farm (not necessarily farm but you get it) and then figure out how to rule as they go. So even though they aren't necessarily the most moral leader, at least they should know how to run the country and keep the army working and understand the political field.

@@CallanElliott unremarkable doesn't mean bad, alot of unremarkable leaders made the remarkable ones by silently building up their assets. like Justinians rule in eastern rome wasn't because he was an great leader but because his predecessor gave him the assets needed to perform all that he did, but his successors were "bad" because the assets bestowed upon him was used up during his reign. but nontheless, a bad educated leader would outperform the peasant any day of the week.

Counterpoint: While an heir-apparent is important, it doesn't have to be a relative. Appointing a key who has been a particularly effective subordinate as your heir can become a major reward to give out, thus convincing your keys to vie for your favor in the hopes that they will one day be the ruler. Rome had great success with this with the "Five Good Emperors": Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus, Marcus Aurelius. Each one starting with Nerva adopted their heir and made him their right-hand man (showering them with an appropriate amount of rewards to keep them loyal). The basic deal was "I'll train you to be an even more effective ruler if you wait until my natural death to take over". And that worked. Obviously, the risk of an adopted/appointed heir is that they'll be motivated to get rid of you just like your crown prince if the rewards you give them aren't enough. But the stability advantage gained by having a designated heir is not limited to genetics.

Bush, Clinton, Adams, the Kennedys...not even the same ballpark...not even in the same planet of the ballpark... ..of what Socialist and Liberals(you call them conservatives now) strove against a hundred years ago in Europe. -------------- As a bonus lesson, pay attention to Jean Luc Picard and the Bolshevik(yes Patrick Steward played Lenin) and their Grotesque overreach, in the same way the French Revolution was a Liberal revolution but turned into terror by the Jacobin. Extremists abandon substance for self serving identity, they forget the reason why there is a struggle that made their distinctions. Whether it is by hubris and delusion or malevolent avarice is unclear, but the results are allways the same, missery. Fuck autocrats, fuck strongmen and punch the idiots who buys into the nonsense that the world is simple and that their darling bully buy will fix all the simple things with their no-nonsense platitudes.

This perhaps is why families, especially large families, are so highly regarded by traditional religions - they give a man the ability to carry on his legacy, at least somewhat. And if the first few are incompetent nincompoops, hopefully you'll get at least one brilliant kid out of twelve who can carry on the family blacksmith or the mother's talent for playing the digeridoo or whatever.
@navilluscire2567
@navilluscire2567 3 жыл бұрын
Kind of reminds me of how some awful parents will try to "live through" their children and their talents for lack of their own or never having the opportunities their children have while they're still living. In a twisted way a dynasty is basically the same thing, a king or ruler of a dynasty may truly love his children and heirs but maintaining a legacy started by some long dead relative must come first or risk not only losing power for a ruler but puts his family in often mortal danger if the dynasty is overthrown. Just look at the former Romanov family, a dynasty of Russian rulers that ended in a bloody coup were all immediate family members were brutally murdered even young children because they weren't just children to their killers they were a political threat to no fault of their own, only that they happened to be born into a royal family that was hated by many and a political obstacle to the bolsheviks. Now that doesn't mean things can't change for the slightly better or even some much needed reforms but mixing real power with family drama and grand ambitions along with the near constant threat of being replaced by the real keys to power and attempting to limit their control is like crossing a great kassem or pit on a thin, rickety board as mentioned in the video about "rules for rulers" as even a would be benevolent dictator seeking to transition into a well made democracy must contend with these dynasties of power and entrenched keys to power. *"A dynasty is the closest thing to a family curse in real life..."* - by anonymous

Some children are just un-teachable. Marcus Aurelius took his son Commodus with him everywhere, taught him as much as he could, raised him to be a good heir and successor. None of it stuck, and Rome started its path down to ruin.
@DylanBegazo
@DylanBegazo 4 жыл бұрын
Paul Bartel That’s because what Marcus should’ve done was first teach commodus to appreciate what he had. That was the lesson that commodus needed. The way to do that was to from birth, raise commodus very poor and very humble. Make commodus know what it’s like to suffer. To starve. To have NOTHING. THEN, when Commodus grew up enough to be around 9 years old, THEN have him begin traveling with his father Marcus to train. That would’ve prevented commodus from being a total ass. People must learn what suffering is before they are given the keys to kingdoms. Without suffering there is no appreciation. Nobody should be in charge of a country who hasn’t experienced suffering and starvation and pain and loneliness and agony first. Marcus failed to teach his son commodus to value what he has been given. Commodus was teachable. Not unteachable. So I disagree. Marcus failed his son. Commodus failed his father. They failed each other.

I would use the roman model: I reign as "augustus" and appoint someone as "cesar" who rules with me together and follows me after my demise. Then he becomes "augustus" and has to choose his own "cesar" Since I already have chosen a successor there would be no point in killing me, because the throne would still be occupied. My "cesar" has no reason to remove me, since we rule together and he already has power. Also would such an act work against him once he becomes augustus because he would face the same threat. Better to keep the status quo. And without a bloodline or similar order of succession there would be no reason to skip ahead in the quere by "removing" those who are in front of one.

In the late period they actually had both simultaneously and nos as names but as mere titles. Starting around the time when they had 4 rulers working with consent. (As opposed to all those counter-emperors.

so the would-be usurpers just need to murder two rulers instead of one. it's better than nothing, but if a group wants to seize power by killing you, they won't bat an eyelid at having to kill another too.

+HappyBeezerStudios - by Lord_Mogul "The problem when two men are standing in a room is, you can only look at one of them; and they were looking at you, with their backs turned, their shirt collars smiling at me." In the end, only 1 can rule. The roman model is only a countermeasure; a mitigation and distribution of the danger across people and across time. It is most brittle when its function is needed the most - against formidable opposition, and in times of great peril.

Brilliant move on their part: Stay monarch by becoming completely obsolete My guess is the reason why the monarch has stayed is because the PM basically controls her through the privy council anyway, whereas in a republic that would be a seperately elected position, with democratic legitimacy

The more you learn about how things work and what's at stake, the more it becomes a "game" in that technical sense. You WANT politics to be a game, because more uncertainty and unknown risk in politics is just not good for most people.

But don't dynasty families run the risk of fucking shit up? I mean there are many cases where the child of the ruler turns out to an extremely shit ruler because they have the mindset of thinking they can do whatever the fuck they want with little to no reguards to politics. I would think that keys would be somewhat worried about heirs behavior?

That is where all the mess comes in throughout periods of history. Consider Henry VI of England (supporters playing each other off which culminated in the War of the Roses) as well as series of coups throughout the Eastern Han dynasty (chain of child emperors on the throne).

Sure but it is probably a safer bet then bet than a power vacuum. I mean you see this kind of shit on the small scale with small businesses all the time. Kid comes in with no training or actual real skills. They think they can run the place from up on high and run it into the ground. But that is a small business you just have to worry about some people losing jobs not a whole country going to war.
