"Superb", "Gripping". Flypast Magazine. DEATH OF PELICAN-16, part-2
Pelican-16 was one of eight Avro Shackleton maritime patrol aircraft commissioned by the South African Air Force in 1957. In 1993 a Shackleton enthusiast came up with an ambitious plan to restore one of these now decommissioned aircraft and turn it into a flying museum. The name of this aircraft: Pelican-16. Early 1994, after ten years on the ground and two years of restoration work she flew again. Following an invitation to take part in the 1994 summer airshow circuit in the UK, Pelican-16 and its crew of 19 took off from Cape Town and headed north. But then in the dead of the blackest night, high over the Western Sahara, the unthinkable happened; two engines on the starboard side failed within a period of just ten minutes. The aircraft and its crew went down. In this highly-acclaimed documentary the remarkable story is told by the men who dared to dream. See footage as it was recorded by the crew as the story unfolded before them. This story of courage, professionalism and friendship is one of the greats in the annals of South African aviation.

I was a radio operator in the crew of the Atlantic French Deployer in Dakar who searched and rescued the Pelican 16 this 13th July 1994, and it was very interesting for me to see the whole story of this crew, thank you very much for this film. For me this rescue was a great moment of my military career and an imperishable memory. I have some picture take this day above the scene if you are interresting ??

Miraculous story by a heroic crew and so pleased they all survived but we have lost a valuable old lady 😪 i cannot believe the bad luck of these engine failures. We had Shacks in full time patrol service whilst i was in the RAF flying hundreds of hours each month with very few engine problems. I wish someone could have stripped those engines to find out why they failed! Sadly that was anyones chance of seeing the LAST airworthy flying Shackleton in the UK. Dont worry Major Eric is up there flying for eternity and freedom in Pelican 16 RIP both mighty flyers from a fellow pilot. Thank you for making this documentary 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🇿🇦

For me one of the most beautiful aircraft ever. A wonderful story about professional airmen. As a former SA naval officer I remember how these men and their aircraft formed an important part of our anti-submarine capabilities. It is an honour for me to have known some of you, to have occasionally flown with you, I salute you, your professionalism, your bravery and your faith!

Piston engines combined with super chargers have never been best choice for long distance flights.Even very well maintained Lufthansa Super constellations in the early sixties very frequently lost one engine on transatlantic flights .Hence the super Conni was nicknamed the fastest three engined passenger plane of its time. Great aviation documentary ,thank you very much. At least the Pelican died fighting on the battle field than ending as a mummy in a sterile museum, actually very worthy of its name "the Shackelton" ending very far from home.

I was fortunate to work at 35 Sqn when the Pelican was restored. To this day, I treasure the picture we as Sqn members took before the Pelican's final flight. Yes, I know and worked with all 19 members and even with some of their children. Andrew, you've done an excellent job, I applaud you and all the men and women that worked on and contributed towards this masterpiece.

Watching this after the passing of Lionel Ashbury - lovely seeing him and the guys in action doing what they love. This one well told story is one of the greatest moments for South African aviation. Makes me incredibly proud to have crossed paths with these gentleman. I'm sure anyone who has come across the Shackelton crew will agree with me that they are wonderful people - easy to talk to, very friendly and always willing to share old stories or answer questions. Love you guys.

Dear Andrew, I stumbled across your excellent movie amid the COVID-19 crisis. What joy it is to find an uplifting true story amid all the doom and gloom we are faced with today. SAAF has a lot to be proud of, that flight crew were without a doubt not only highly skilled, but they had the Lord on their side - crash landing in the middle of nowhere in pitch blackness, and everyone walked away, virtually unscathed. It was a miracle, for sure, but the skill, competence, and character of the flight crew shine through. I wonder if there was ever any determination as to why two engines failed?

I have just come across this fantastic story. In 1966/67 I was serving on HMS Sirius on the Beira patrol, spending weeks at sea. In those days, without internet and the only communication with those at home was by letter, there was nothing more beautiful than the Shakelton's arrival, flying over the ship and then coming down low alongside dropping our mail!

This was a truly fantastic story told in a quality documentary and anybody who loves aviation will be moved by the efforts of the crew to restore the aircraft and save it for history. This documentary is a fitting tribute to both the aircraft and people involved. I'm glad you didn't give up the effort to get one flying and I hope pelican 22 flies for many more years.

Wonderful documentary that I didn't think I'd watch all the way through. I couldn't help but think about the B-29 that was restored in Greenland but burned before it could take its second maiden flight not long after 16 went down. Sad that both were lost but both were lost trying to do what they were built to do.

What a fantastic documentary. World class, Andrew. Thankyou so much.. I am familiar with the "Shaklebomber" when it was operated by the RAF. I flew on RAAF Neptunes which were of similar vintage and lack of comforts. "Shakes" used to visit RAAF bases in Townsville and Richmond. and we used to remark on their "contra-rotating airframes." I had never heard of Pelican 16 previously but am so glad I have seen the docos. Brilliant!

Andrew, I have to say documentaries made by people like you out of love and passion far outstrip many others. You get a real feeling for the whole situation and those involved. I don't make documentaries but I interview people who lived during WW2 civilians and service personnel and send there stories to the imperial war museum for posterity as their number are sadly dwindling. First hand accounts as in this story are priceless. Thank you for making this truly inspiring film. I wish you well.

What a beautiful film this is! The story´s told with sensitivity and the protagonists´ determination to get Pelican 16 back into the air was matched only by their courage and level-headedness when tested to the extreme. I found the rescue and the subsequent restoration of Pelican 22 very moving - I may be a big tough ex-scaffolder but I freely admit that I had to watch the ending twice because I couldn´t seem to see very clearly the first time. The crew certainly found the right person to make the film which tells their story.

Excellent documentary Andrew. My Father worked at, and we lived near, AVRO's Chadderton site where Shackletons were built. I know the politics of Western Sahara are a bit complicated at the moment, but have you any desire overland to the crash site? I have driven the popular overland route to the Sahara in Morocco, and would love one day to continue on to find the wreck.

Thanks so much for this!! Yesterday we were at Airforce Museum in Ysterplaat where they had a show. In the museum we saw a video playing (at that stage we saw how they climbed of the plane and reunited with their families) but we had no idea what the video was about so we walked on. At 1pm they started the Shackelton and it was very impressive. So last night my husband decided to search about this plane, as he knew about this one that fell in the desert. He searched and found these videos on KZfaq and I couldn't believe that you created these videos. We have been following you for years and love your 4x4 stories. We watched it now and enjoyed it. Thank you for these amazing videos!! Unfortunately we saw nothing about this crash at the museum. 😢 So if my husband didn't know about this and searched some more, we would never have known.
