I think it's because the city is too accustomed to foreigners and Kurt himself just feels like a dime a dozen tourist here. He wants to feel special and exotic and I get his frustration.

Yep, 20 years ago when i first went to Koh Samui i could not even enter that place bcoz of my fear for snakes, but my friend (South African) liked it a lot😊. I have been to Samui about 5 or 6 times over the years, nice place.

I feel like that's when you're feeling like at home you start to act in a certain way. In Poland it's also not polite to go around with no t-shirt, but it's nothing wrong in places you feel safe and comfortable. Cheers.

I first went to Koh Samui in Nov. 1986. A beautiful place for sure. Once I got to the east side and to the No Name Bungalows I stayed at for 4 days, I walked out to the beach. What a disappointment of all the trash along the shore side which was coated with an inch or so of a black muck.. Once you get into the ocean and wade out to deeper water, the snorkeling was OK. One day while checking out the island, I venture back to the west side where the ferries arrive from the mainland port of Surat Thani. I decided to take a 6 hour day trip to one of the largest islands of the Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park. A guide takes you up the rocky path with lots of clay to walk over to view a lake within a crater atop. Then we headed down and by then my shoes and others I noticed were caked with the clay. So I walked down to the beach. From the distance its beautiful and as you approach it, you see all kinds of trash floating on the shore line. Plastic bottles, bags, pcs of foam and even a flip flop shoe. I looked over the trash as I walked along and found a toothbrush which I used to clean the clay out of my tennis shoe soles. I told a few other about it and gave them the toothbrush I found. I have never forgotten that day on a tour on an island in a national marine park. I even saved about a golf ball sized amount of clay which I analyzed later at the lab when I got down to the National University of Singapore. Overall, there is a lot of trash on the shorelines in Asia. Some worse than others.
