Dragons' Den

3 жыл бұрын

Michael Oke helps ordinary people write their life stories and plans to expand significantly after investment, he's seeking £75k in return for a 20% equity stake in Bound Biographies, but Deborah believes the potential for exploitation is just too high.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

I can imagine lonely, wealthy widows or widowers falling for this at £300 per day plus £3000 to produce the book (2 copies apparently). A fixed total fee would motivate this man to work efficiently but the daily fee gives an incentive to drag it out in his rather smarmy way with emotional blackmail thrown in - don't you value your family, you can't put a value on memories etc.

They would target older people who either don't use the internet or are not internet savy. It seems really predatory and I'm with Debra. I can imagine them coming around every day pretending they care about the person and drag the story out as long as possible. He is targeting elderly lonely (and more important vulnerable) people who would prefer a physical book because they didn't grow up in the digital age. Younger people wouldn't give two shits about this because they already document their entire lives on social media or could create their one online blog. And by younger I don't mean teens. He has the most smarmy face ever but you can tell he'd be really good at buttering up old and lonely people. Even the way he said "I drink their tea and eat their biscuits" made me feel uneasy; it conjured up this image of him in some old dear's house, making himself comfortable, knowing he's going to be making A LOT of money off of their vulnerability. The way he said "tease bits out", which translates to "I try drag it out for as long as I can so I make another visit and get another £300". Most old people probably just want to give their family members something loving and personal to remember them by and get hoodwinked by this slink in a suit. His whole demeanour is sleazy. Seriously though, there's charities that help old/lonely people and one of the things they could do is link them up with a buddy who could help them write their stories down and turn it into a "book"/ memoir for their family or a loved one. It would combat loneliness (which is the main aim of the charities that help lonely people who are old), it would also keep their minds active by thinking and writing (the same charities also aim to get old people to do tasks which require thinking and brain power in order to try reduce the risk of dementia) and you'd also be leaving something nice for a loved one/family member. Even if it wasn't a bound book, but printed and put together in a nice folder or something.

This pitch is a reminder of the predators who hide in plain sight. This man preys on elderly, vulnerable and lonely people to pay him a large fee and for him to visit them. This then creates a dependency between him and the client because of the client’s wellbeing and need for companionship. He states that they remain friends and he invites them to his wedding but this is just a ploy because they’ve paid him an extortionate amount of money and he wants to keep them sweet. He probably still charges them to spend time with him after their book is finished.

The kind of people who think they're going to pay £3k for a book about themselves aren't poor, vulnerable battlers; they're wealthy narcissists. Not really. Have you ever published a book? £3k is about right. Now £9-10k not so much. The idea itself isn’t terrible AT a fair price cause people do leave behind family like if I died, maybe some day my great granddaughter or great grandson could read about me and feel like in a way they know that part of their family. Reading between the lines the writing is clearly on the wall - people are going to have an almighty shock when they realise how much they have spent, then it will be too late. Smooth talk can achieve too much from the gullible.

It would've made more sense for him to say that he charged 3k in total which included 10 home visits and 2 copies of the book where 50% was paid up-front and the remainder to be paid on completion. It at least incentivises him to work efficiently. Charging a daily fee of £300 is just asking for people to be milked.

@AndreSantos-kk8jq 9 ай бұрын
I completely agree. The flat fee with visits included is a fairer way for him to work and the customer gets exactly what they paid for. The daily fee charge on top of the £3000 is extortionate. Vulnerable people who may be lonely, naive or isolated will pay £300 to this man to visit and that’s how he makes his money.

The unfortunate thing is: I don‘t even think that guy takes advantage of vulnurable people on purpose. He might actually think that he has a non-predatory business. Because true scamers, people who know that they are exploiting people with business models like this, would not want to get in front of legit business people AND in front of a camera with it. Doesn‘t change the fact that his business is hugely problematic!
