I kind of suspected a rod bearing(s) or a broken cylinder liner or 2 when you were trying to get it cranked up. My guess is someone ran it out of oil before the last owner got it. When a Detroit *QUITS* leaking oil, you better check it and add a few gallons!! Probably salvage the trans. and the diffs, etc. and scrap the rest. Better luck on the next one!😁

I bought a fleet of 8V92TTA powered trucks in 1979. I ran Rotella straight 40 ONLY! We dropped the rods and mains at 675,000 on our test engine which was our first addition to the fleet, and the bearings had very minor traces of copper showing. the DDA dealer in Memphis was so impressed that they sent the bearings and an oil sample to DDA corporate for evaluation.

None of those bulging tire cages came that way from the factory. My dad told me of one mechanic in the motor pool at Ft. Richardson, in Anchorage that wasn't using a cage (they weren't that common in the early 1950s). One of those Dayton wheels came apart and cut him pretty much in half. No one in that shop ever forgot... that was an expensive training session!!

You can also get conversion wheels so you can mount regular 11r22.5 tires on those axles. We used to do that all the time. Ive also changed hindreds of split rims over the years. The biggest thing is that if there is any rust on them that they get thrown away.

The old widomakers are banned in Nova Scotia. $10k fine per rim IIRC. However, if you want to convert the spoke wheels over, you can just use standard dayton rims which take a modern 22.5" or 24.5" tire. As for comming apart, back in the 80's the owner's shop was doing one in the shop and the ring embedded itself into the ceiling, and they never could get it down.

Polish that journal up still in the truck with some shoelace and sandpaper (or whatever your preferred sketchy method is) and throw a new bearing on it. All you have to lose is an hour and the cost of a bearing. Totally worth it to blow it up in grand fashion at the truck pull rather than whimpering its way to the scrap yard.

4:29 technically, the split ring isn't the widowmaker, the R-H5 style is. It's the one that the 2 sections lock together in the center. Here's a vid that explains it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNt2lLGnnt-WaZc.html . of course the lock ring wheel can be dangerous too, and any large truck wheel should be inflated in a safety cage

I had a few trucks with em on the farm. Changed tires for years, until I saw a a circle cut out (filled in/patched) in the local coops wall, (limestone wall btw), where one blew and cookie cuttered thru stone. Now I say new style wheels are a way better idea.
@DigitalBenny
@DigitalBenny 2 жыл бұрын
There's actually a specific type of split rim that's called a "Widowmaker" They still make split rims for road trucks, they're not illegal or banned or anything of the sort. A "Widowmaker" wheel is a wheel where the "split" is in the CENTER as opposed to one edge. THOSE wheels are no longer made, and are (technically) "banned" I've been doing tires for over 2 decades and in that time have only come across an ACTUAL "Widowmaker" wheel once. If you ever see one in person, you can understand their danger. On a more common split wheel, you can inspect the lock ring from a (relatively) safe position as you begin to air it up. With a centersplit wheel, you have to get down and put your easily detachable skull in the blast zone. And THAT is how widows were made.

Haha, "widowmakers"! We just called those spoke wheels. We used to balance them by putting a tire hammer on the ground next to the tire, spinning the wheel to see where it was sticking out more (which we would determine by seeing which sector of the tire came closest to the tire hammer as it was spinning) and then tightening with an impact wrench.

The rh 5 wheel is the widow maker. Split ring wheels are used in America to this day on old trucks. Mostly chassis though. Steer tire split rings are a no no. The frame situation is a no go here also. Parade truck / antique truck should be OK. No trailers . I worked for iloca in Illinois and MBT for years on trucks and trailers. I'm excited for this build. Vvg brought me here. Good luck with this. I'm subscribed now.

Was great you attempted & succeeded in getting it running. It’s a shame that the previous owners didn’t use the right oil & wrecked some rod bearings. I like the idea of a pulling truck. Keep searching the scrap yards. & use the F tree kitty to trailer it. But please stay on the cab over Detroit road. Mega cool points!

At least you have a sense of humor about the oil-viscosity issue....but yeah, that old Astro is beyond salvation aside from perhaps the transmission and some cab-specific items for another Astro project.

That steering colum though!! It looks cartoonish but its likely comfortable to lean on. I never got a chace to drive an astro. I think theyre great looking old trucks. That frame is nutz!!
