Jane and Tony had lived on a sailboat when they were child-free and loved it, so when their landlord raised the rent on their 960-square-foot apartment by 19%, they decided they wanted to avoid payments and they started thinking about boats again. Though this time it would be with their 5-year-old daughter.
When they started looking at boats on craigslist they found a lot on offer. After looking at over 40 boats, they settled on a 43-foot Chris Craft Corinthian for just $14,000.
After the initial investment in their 46-year-old boat (it needed some work), they pay less than $400 per month in slip fees which includes the mooring, as well as electricity and water. They're hooked up to the Internet and have cable tv. The only convenience they're missing is a flush toilet (they use an electric one which has to be pumped out).
Jane and Tony say that their families don't fully understand their choice to make a boat their home, but for the couple they wouldn't feel right living any other way.
Original story: faircompanies.c...
A postscript from Jane: "About a month after this was filmed, we were motoring on the river and split a seam. Our boat sank, taking with it everything we owned. Thank God none of us were hurt, but it did put us in the scary position of being homeless."

When I was a teenager, we were homeless and I never knew it. Family of 6, my dad bought a river boat/house boat that was kinda like a studio apartment on the water. It was a 35 footer, $10 a foot for the slip fee, and my dad made it work for us for the three years it took to get a home. I loved that life, it was fantastic. My brother and I had various dinghies that we would row around the harbor and take to the beach. We had to live in close quarters sure, but dad did what he had to to keep us off the streets, in our schools, and made it seem like we were just having a nautical adventure in our lives. Never once did he tell us we were homeless, until we we were adults and realized what he had to do for us. We weren’t the only family either in the water. It’s a viable life style, and one I dream of doing again now that I am an adult. My siblings agree, these were the best years of our lives. We grew apart when we lived in a house, but for 3 years on the water, sharing very little space, we were best friends. I am glad my dad was quick thinking after we lost our home. I would be a very different person had I not lived on a boat.

Best thing I've heard in the past year! We never had to lived on a boat or in a tiny house (although I wouldn't mind) but we did homeschool for about a decade. Those were the best years of my life. My kids (mostly adults) agree and talk about "the good old days" often.

Excellent story. THANKS for sharing. I wouldn't say U guys were homeless at all during your time on the boat, a "home" is a "a place" of sentimental value. It can be anywhere. A "house" is tangible and it takes people to make it into a "home". Your Dad provided a SUSTAINABLE "home" that happened to be on a boat. Nothing wrong with that. He was smart enuff to get off of the grid.

My family lived on a 40x15 foot monk for 3 years while I was in high school. Some of the best memories are from that time. It was 2 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 parakeets. We had fun rowing out in the dingy all year long. Used bathrooms and showering up on land in a building. This was in the 80's. Our boat cost $12,000 and moorage was like 100 a month with water and electric. Hated northern storms as we would get sea sick. Only once did we have to find somewhere else to sleep for the night. Fun times!

Me too. Hoping they had boat insurance. My partner ALWAYS gets tow insurance and insurance for other boats since it’s more so he doesn’t damage any other boats because his was under $6000 and a little smaller. Some of the boats in the yard we’re at our more than a house 😱 Really hope they are ok though. That’s scary.

@@notcomatose6602 A 43 foot chris craft like the one they bought costs 240,000 dollars new. Being 14,000 dollars should be a sign it was a major renovation project. It is like buying a 45 year old ferrari for 14,000. You are buying someone else's problem or failed project. Decayed luxury goods like this are worse than worthless, they are a money pit. Nobody would sell that lovely boat for 14,000 grand without it having major problems. A new small 3 person fishing boat can easily cost 14,000 grand new.

@@scottpowell6145 Just for you Captain Powell. Having spent your life on the liberating waters, it must be pretty stifling now. But take heart; you certainly have gone through many and quite unexpected life experiences. And you sailed right through them (matter of speaking) to bring you through 7 decades. Quite remarquable, you must have lots of life stories. Captain Powell, this is another life experience you are ajusting through. This one, however demands your internal compass to be used with as much clarity, patience and a certain abandonment to the fact that life can always bring us great joy. The journey of the great man you have been just goes on, if you allow yourself to look at it with indulgence; though such big adjustment cannot be easy... but doable! I lived on a 45 foot houseboat for 10 years, (except winter). I had a wolfdog who was the mascot of the whole community, and elderly women would steal him to take fishing at night. All the lakes in the TVA system just got so crowded, especially in summer that I sold the boat, right after the old wolfdog passed. I have a 28 foot cabin cruiser now, (and something to tow it) and am about to start traveling, again, places like Minnesota, Maine, and any of the remote lakes where I will find few people. I Will travel with the seasons and finish it out to suit my lifestyle after I get on it. I never want to get stuck in one place again. There is a new love in my life now. A rescue animal, (Madison). She is probably pure 3 year old grey wolf. She has adapted well to traveling, and loves boats. I have been camping on Islands where I can let her run off leash. I have a 10 foot inflatable that I can tow along behind the boat, or deflate and store onboard. Life has begun to be very good again.

Qonita Badeges Docking fees vary from $50 a month in Tennessee up to $100 a day around Boston or Maine. I pay $295 a month near Charleston SC, but there is free wifi and cable which I don't use. However if you own a river or lake front lot it is free. A lot of people buy worthless swamp land then build a walkway out to their boat. Use an incinerator toilet, and legally dump your grey water overboard. You can use lake or river water if the water quality is ok, filter it, for washing and cleaning, then run the hot water side through a reverse osmosis for your drinking water and ice maker. You will have sterile pure water. Living off grid isn't hard on a boat, and if you don't like the neighbors, you can move the same day.

Community is a great feeling. I have solar and havnt paid for power for 16 months. I guess what i am saying is, don't let a disablity hold you back. A smile goes a long way.

Very nice family, beautiful boat. When you're a boater, especially a live-aboard, you need to know the lingo: 😊 Pointy nose = bow Kitchen = galley Dining table = dinette Bathroom = head Bed = bunk I'm so terribly sorry you lost your boat. Those Chris Craft Constellations are such beautiful boats (just look at that cabin!) but those wood hulls are hard to upkeep. I hope and pray things worked out for your beautiful family.

Our daughter who graduated from college and her partner who graduated from a Maritime Academy sold most of what they owned and bought a Working sailboat. Our kids did it because they love the water and wanted to become debt free earlier in life. It’s no different than living in a tiny home. This family is ingenious. Good for them. I hope they learn their boat. Their daughter will be richer for spending this type of time with her parents. God Bless.

It is so sad that this boat sank; glad that they survived. I'm a little confused about the logic of buying a 46 year old wooden boat. You can see all the pieces of wood pieced together on it. I don't know much about vessels but this doesn't make sense to me.

I've been living on my 56foot x 15ft Aluminum hull houseboat for over 4 years now.... I pay less on my 50 ft covered slip than my sister does on her monthly HOA fees. Between my $350/month slip fee (that includes free water and high speed WiFi and garbage) i probably don't spend more than an additional $80/month ( and that includes a $35 pump-out fee every 3 weeks or so) on basic boat maintenance. But, owning an all wooden boat is just too upkeep and too many unknowns.... but, i highly recommend living on any fresh water lake. But if you don't know boats.... Please pay to have a professional do a boat survey before buying it (it will give you more bargaining power). It will be the best $400 to $500 you will ever spend. Life is too short for regrets, enjoy.
