I didn't mention this a few weeks ago, but Rousseau is now over 2 years old!! It's amazing to think how far we've come as a community in that time. I still remember those few weeks before uploading the first video that were filled with a ton of recording. I have not mentioned this before, but the original Clair de lune recording was actually the first video I created, essentially a sight-read test to experiment with video effects. I'll be honest, I was not expecting more than a few thousand views, and as of right now it has now been viewed over 19 million times. That is truly hard to comprehend. Now during lock down, reminiscing on those days, I decided it would be nice to spend a bit more time working on the piece, and remake the video in the 2020 style! I'm sure you'll agree, many things have been refined over those two years - one of the biggest things that stuck out to me was the velocity curves of the piano library being set too strong on the first video, making the recording sound like it's being played at f throughout, along with the color which quite a few people mentioned. I hope this one can be a fresh new take on the piece in this visualization style, that can please both the ears and the eyes :) Wishing you all a happy and healthy Monday, and two weeks ahead ♥

what i love about how rouseeau performed this piece is the lengthy pauses near the end. in those moments, even though the chords are in a major key and sound hopeful, you can hear their sadness. in the quiet moments between the chords you get overflown with such emotion, the sadness and dismay Debussy felt while composing this piece.

My grandpa died a couple years ago and when I was driving with my brother and now sister-in-law from the church where we held the funeral to the burial site, this piece started playing in the car. When I heard it, I knew it sounded pretty, but it was so much more than that. This piece really sparked something inside of me, so with my grandma’s help (who’s married to the grandparent that died), I learned Clair de Lune. What I came to realize is that the song is, in a way, representative of a lifetime, whereas in the birth of the piece there are simple, fundamental chords that lay out the trajectory for the rest of the piece. Then the piece goes through puberty and flowers into a fulfillment of its true potential with beautiful and complex chord progressions. The piece then nears its end as it grows old and reflects on life, where it combines the original chords from the beginning of the piece with some chord progressions underneath. Then, the piece goes through a little more reflection and dies. What’s interesting is that I always thought that death was a terrible, morbid thing, yet in this piece, death is presumably bright and happy. I found that the reason death is actually portrayed as such a beautiful thing in this piece is because without death we’d always have tomorrow to do what’s important, to grow our relationships, to involve ourselves in a rich and meaningful life. But someday there won’t be a tomorrow, so we need to do what’s important now. I finally found peace in the eternal rest of my grandfather, for, just as the light of the moon is the greatness that can be found in the death of the day, all of the great things I can love about not only my grandpa but all of this universe is found through the inevitable end to our lives. Thanks, Debussy, for showing me that death is just as necessary as it is beautiful. I've already commented this on one of Charles Cornell's videos but I figured I may as well share it here too. Also I changed everywhere that I wrote "song" to "piece." You're welcome.

When I was younger (age 4/5) I was forced into playing piano. I never loved doing it, to be honest. My grandmother used to play the piano and my mother quit when she was young. When my grandmother passed a few years ago, I realized I never got to know her. The piano was one of our connections. I started trying to get more into the piano. I listened to classical music for days, Clair de Lune always being my favorite. Now, I've been learning this song in hopes of connecting with my grandmother once again.

Same here, mate. Whenever you heard this song in the TEW games, you knew you were safe for a minute. Well... actually, you knew there was a 50/50 chance that there was going to be a terrifying boss battle ahead (for a first-time player, at least) and that you'd better just spend some green gel, cash in any keys, and save your game before moving on because there was no telling when you'd be able to again. I've just wrapped up the TEW2 in the wee hours of this morning. While I think both games are excellent, I swear, I'm starting to notice an unfortunate trend in horror games. Take Dead Space 1 and 2, for example (we don't talk about DS3 ever). The first DS game was pure horror with less focus on the underlying mechanics. DS2 improved on the gamplay mechanics but seemed to lose some of the first game's horror identity as it moved towards a more action-y style. The same thing with TEW, it seems. The second game was ridiculously easy even on Nightmare, although, I did appreciate the Void-like environmental design over that of the first game. (Void = Dishonored reference, floating "islands" in the sky, things frozen in time and space, etc.) Still, I love them all (Except DS3. We don't talk about that one).

I remember first hearing this piece on the list of set pieces on my old e-piano. I loved listening to it at the time, but I never knew what it was called. For hours, I’d sit by the piano with my head on the keys like any other kid and sometimes fall asleep when it was late enough. My mom had sometimes walked in on me staring into the air with my ears open to it. Playing the first few notes, she had told me to play it to her when I had learnt it fully. When I tried learning from the beginning, I stumbled across Rousseau’s original performance on Clair de Lune and it was still always on repeat for me. Regardless of how impossible it felt to play, my infatuation with it fuelled my practice. That was 3 years ago. My mom passed away back in 2018 from breast cancer. I never learned the piece fast enough to play it to her. I’ve always regretted missing the last chance to see her in person at the airport, where she left for her final treatment abroad. Since her passing, I’ve put off learning the piece. I understand the “story of life”-like experience most people feel when listening to Clair de Lune. It is undoubtedly a beautiful piece, and one of my tied favourites, but it has many other different feelings attached with it. Sometimes it fills me with bliss and bittersweet release. Other times it’s deep regret and self-frustration. I haven’t heard it in quite a while though, and since I’ve put learning it off, I’ve lost almost half of my progress. I’m not sure how, but I’ll try redeeming it back. Maybe she could still hear it from up there.

Same here boys. Currently stuck at 2:20 because my left hand seizes to work as it demands. I’m trying this piece out only 10 months into teaching myself the piano. Maybe I’m trying to much for where I am in skill but hey, I made it this far!

This guy is how I learned probably a dozen pieces. Reading the music just doesn’t compare to someone playing it as beautifully as he does.
