Today, I decided to run these two zero drop running shoes back to back to back to back in order to figure out which one was the right shoe for me. The contenders:
Altra Torin 4.0 🠞 amzn.to/3htRaXX
Altra Escalante Racer 🠞 amzn.to/2Qoca6r
Which did I decide and why? Well, you'll have to watch the video for that!

Sorry... I referred to the Escalante Racer as the Escalante Race. Brain problem. Lol. But I figured you know what shoe I’m talking about so I didn’t see the need to redo the entire video! I hope you understand.

Great review and comparison! I also run in five fingers sometimes as well as Luna sandals. Love them both but sometimes I feel like I need that bit more cushioning (as I'm still a novice level runner)...but not as much as 'traditional' running shoes. After discovering how natural minimalist shoes feel I hate the cushy, bouncy, artificial feel of big brand shoes I used previously. Anything with a firmer feel when you can feel the ground and feel your muscles actually working is awesome. The Escalante Racer sounds perfect from so many people's reviews. Interesting that Born to Run coach Eric Orton and co author Chris McDougall recommend these in their new book Born to Run 2. Thanks for making the video...these reviews really help the rest of us decide without buying a dozen pairs of shoes!

What a fantastic review!! I use the Torin 4's and Escalante 1.5's (not racers). As much as I loved the Escalantes I also bought the Torins and they are my shoe of choice for any distance. That brings me to my new runner tip. Rotate your shoes. So use both because that gives the shoes a chance to dry out and bounce back between runs. :) Have fun with them.

Nice vid, very timely find for me. Like you, I do most of my runs in minimalist shoes and sandals, which I've been doing for 3 or 4 years, and alternate in Altras for my longer runs. I have the Torin 4s and find they hurt the arch area of my feet (one more than the other), after a few miles, becomes pretty painful sometimes. I suspect I my foot muscles from wearing minimal shoes daily, as well as running in them, just don't jive with all the support in the Torin. I also don't love how squishy they are, likely because I'm not used to the feeling. The midsole may also be a bit worn out by now as well, though they've held up really well overall. I've been looking at the Escalante and Racer, so this was a great comparison. I suspect the racer will better fit the bill. Appreciate the content! Good luck with your running.

Same age most likely and I’m also an avid runner… Used to run with Nike, Adidas or Asics Kayano. Just purchased one month ago my first pair of Altra, the Riviera 2 and I’ve never felt so good while running. I’ll stick to Altra shoes now onwards!!! Very interesting video!!!

I notice from your videos that you’re heel striking which makes me wonder how did you ever manage to run in vibrams without pain? All of these shoes- minimalist as well as zero drop with some cushioning- are created for mid or forefoot striking form.

Nice review! I love the camera work while running. Did you use a drone for that? I have had the Torin 4s for about 3 weeks now and love them. They are like a swiss army knife shoe that can handle just about any type of pace/distance you throw at it plus has solid traction for light trail use and/or wet roads. I haven’t run in the Racers yet but i’m sure i’ll be looking into buying a pair down the road for speed workouts!

Sounds like the Toren are good for winter runs and summer walks. The escalate are more a summer running shoe.

They both have a place in your lineup. These shoes are night and day. Personally, I’m a escalante racer guy. I run in nothing else so I’m bias towards the racer.

Cool experiment. Now I have to really think about what I want vs need here. I like the idea of performance and breathability over cushy and comfortable I think. This leans me toward the racers too but we'll see. Again, thanks for the cool vid!

nice review, but what's the point of using zero-drop shoes if you heel strike?
@jefreywith1f924
@jefreywith1f924 3 жыл бұрын
Because the zero drop shoes maybe not immediately but over time can help change your mechanics to a midfoot or forefoot strike. If your heel striker, go run barefoot on the grass and you'll probably won't heel strike. Nothing wrong with heel striking, but runners with knee or hip problems could benefit more from a midfoot/forefoot strike. On the other hand, it's better to transition gradually to zero drop shoes. This way your less likely to develop ankle or calf pain due to not normally using those muscles and joints when running in higher drop shoes.
@HenryChinaski11
@HenryChinaski11 3 жыл бұрын
@@jefreywith1f924 zero drop shoes can and will change your mechanics only if you run the correct way, which is forefoot first. and no, the vast majority of heel strikers automatically change to a forefoot strike once they take off their shoes. landing on the heel without shoes that encourage you to hurts and is awkwardly difficult to do barefoot or in zero-drop shoes. and sorry but i disagree, there are plenty of things wrong with heel striking

@@jefreywith1f924 even from just the first sentence of the article you can understand how ludicrous it is...'Even though 95 percent of runners instinctively strike the ground with their heels'. wrong. they instinctively do it only because of modern shoes being introduced by nike in 1972 that have a higher heel than forefoot, which brings the heel to touch the ground first. the vast majority of people who run barefoot, if not everybody, INSTINCTIVELY touch the ground with their forefoot first. we evolved to run long distances barefoot.
@jefreywith1f924
@jefreywith1f924 3 жыл бұрын
@@HenryChinaski11 First off, I said running barefoot on grass not concreate as a experiment not a routine and for a short period. Instinctively means not thinking about it. In the study 95% of long distance runners (like it or not most distance runners wear shoes with moderate/ high cushion drop off) so it's not crazy that most would instinctively heel strike maybe not all of the time because speed and fatigue also play a role which can change the length of your stride and can affect foot strike thruout your run. Early man and remote indigenous people mostly land on their heel when walking but land midfoot/forefoot when running barefoot or with minimal foot covering. Nothing has changed. It's about the evolution of the technology of the shoe. When Nike developed the Vaperfly 4% to break the sub-two-hour marathon. They at one point produced a prototype with the heel mostly striped off to save weight. All the elite athletes hated it so they went back to the chunky soft heel model. Comfort is more important than the specs, material and foam. You said heel striking is bad. That's theoretical and anecdotal. No current study has shown that a specific running shoe has ever been shown to reduce injury. Most elite marathoners are heel strikers therefore it doesn't affect performance neither. However; When it comes to sprinters heel striking doesn't work well. I'm just being objective. I personally instinctively land on the balls of my feet. I get injuries like everybody else and I wear Altra Escalantes and Sketcher Razors. But my injuries are ankle and foot related not knee related. I have bad knees and other shoes make my knees hurt. It doesn't matter where you strike. It has more to do with striking and then like a pendulum rolling to your toes. Not stomping. No hard feelings. We can agree to disagree.

Yeah, you won't really know until you put some mileage on both; thats when any real problems will surface. Why not both? Torin's for long easy days; Escalates for uptempo quicker runs. Unless all your runs are similar paced? By the way, no modern day running shoe should have to be broken in; they should be ready to go, and at their optimum right out of the box.
