I'm glad you said it yourself in the end: you DID do some preparation for this nightmare run, just by virtue of knowing the map and all its secrets. The more I see of your nightmare endeavours, the more I'm thinking nightmare is a really fun difficulty for when you've played a map to death. Might give it a go myself some day.

I've been finding UV -fast to be a good intermediate challenge for if you're no longer excited by UV but not quite up for NM. Idk if modern source ports make -fast more accessible bc I play Chocolate Doom lmao, but in Vanilla/Chocolate/etc, it does require a little extra work to set up (I have a batch file for each episode of Ultimate Doom and one for Doom 2 to start me on the first map on UV -fast) but once that's set up, it's even quicker and easier to start up a game than usual bc I just open the batch file and it skips the menus and pops me right into the game. There's a pretty big downside in that it doesn't seem to save properly; when I try to save a game on -fast, loading that saved game crashes the program, so that forces me to play the entire episode/WAD in one sitting (which works for me bc that's how I like to play anyways, but I know I'm unusual in that regard). But I've gotten so used to playing on -fast that when I was watching Decino's most recent Arrival video, I didn't even notice -fast was on until he mentioned it lmao, I think it's a lot of fun and I recommend giving it a shot if you're looking for more excitement than regular old UV.

It's for sure a nice change of pace. With the respawning enemies making kills a temporary convenience rather than an end goal, your priorities change RADICALLY.

Man...containment area. THe very first time I played this back in '93, I spent a couple of *hours* hunting secrets and items! Didn't know what the next level would be, so I just had to slog!

absolute favourite IWAD map, this is peak Doom dungeon crawl. big respect for it having no hitscan, makes the berserk reveal that much more amazing. must be a nightmare on... Nightmare, lmao.

I uniquely enjoyed this one. This is my #1 go-to map for all occasions and I ALWAYS do it punching only, usually UV-fast 100% including lost souls but it's sure fun on nightmare too. Great work here for having not practiced!

This has always been a favorite of mine too. It's a bit of a pain the way it's so spread out and you have the big crate maze but I just love all the close quarters combat. Lots of quick one shot kills around every corner with the shotgun and berserk pack. :)

Oh my, yes. Part of me thinks E2M5 might be worse bc it's so spread out, but E2M6 has so many tight hallways with turbopinkies and barons so it's hard to say which one will be worse, but I totally agree that they'll both be pretty challenging.

I've had a bit of a break from all my activities and could play vidya again. Thanks to this series, I picked Doom. Feels good to revisit the OG, it has a certain purity of purpose and the architecture has for the most part really stood the test of time. I don't think I've ever appreciated episode 1 and how Romero designed it so much before. Although I _am_ using his E1M4 and E1M8 replacements.

Oh, one of my all-time favourites for UV play! Can't say why I love this map so much. Maybe because it kinda plays with my fantasy - I like to imagine how this one would look in modern engine. Or maybe, it is aone of that things that lays deep in childhood memory (although the same can be said for any D1 map from first three episodes). Must say, you done this one really well.

Your playthrough has inspired me to start another run through Doom 1 and 2. I'm not good enough for nightmare and I would play UV Fast if I hadn't already completed it. For me, UV Fast is at the point where it is doable, with a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and restarting, and I don't want to waste hours on Thy Flesh Consumed when I could be playing other wads. So I'm just doing normal UV 100% kills and secrets, and because of you, 100% items and chainsaws. And so far I must say that hunting for a single armor bonus amongst all of the zombiemen corpses is hard work.

You see this is exactly what I'm talkin about here. I don't understand why people don't like this map. I however do because using Berserk Punch is fun to do and even though Lost Souls are annoying at least they don't respond like other monsters in Nightmare Mode at all which is always a good thing. Box maze isn't really annoying if you know the layout by now and I still like it for what it's worth. Again no hit scanners as well which is again, a good thing! Yeah this is why I still like this map IMO! Well despite the forgotten practice you still did an excellent job beating this map. Many more videos to come! 😄✊

5:10 or whatever, OMG! THAT WAS THE SECRET I WAS MISSING! DAMN IT! i feel so silly now looking at it... (i think i also saw this from you or another person already. and i forgot. oooh im sooo dumb lol) i should have just wall humped on uv..... that gives me 12/12 but i should have found that myself... darn it.. great play man... overall, this level was very on point.... no real practice you say for the level and you just killed it... im so jealous of that skill lol GREAT STUFF man

Ah, containment area or as I like to call it "storage zone". I always wondered the why of those uac boxes, what might those contain? weaponry? ammo? supplies? ...I dunno. This map used to scare me a little, cuz at times I take a corner and bam I have an imp or a demon right in front of me. Still, I like it!

This map is the closest I ever got to ragequitting doom back when I first tried it. I dunno, the exploration just really screwed with me. Repeat playthroughs are much milder obviously. Just wondering, which map are you most worried about?

I think that nightmare difficulty is what the game is intended to play with. spawning demons brings so much more the hell feeling. you have to constantly move and you can't go back.. because there is just more demons. It's like the Doom cover art.

E2m2 is one of my favorite Maps in episode 2 mainly because of my love of big explorable maps at least to me and the music is just childhood nostalgic what whatever I see this map the music immediately pops out of mind and this is the map that I see For the First Time The Lost Souls after I get the chainsaw. I know some people get lost in this map but me personally I never get lost a map even in the first time that play it as a kid because I just love to explore and find all the secret for myself with no help of any kind with no internet something you don't see that nowadays.

The room at 3:00 reminds me of those raising platforms in The Factory or The Chasm where if you don't hit the boundary box just right the floor raises without removing the damaging floor part. I can't remember but did your analysis of the Damaging Floors, etc. cover that bug or is that just a GZDoom thing?

Geezus I do not remember this map having 12 fraggin secrets Is there any map in OG DooM or DooM II that has more than 12? I would guess not but could very well be wrong.

None in Doom 1; Episode 1's maximums are 9 in Phobos Lab and 7+2 in Toxin Refinery + Military Base. E2's next highest is the 10 in Deimos Lab or 10+1 in Command Center + Fortress of Mystery; Episode 3's maximum is the ten in Unholy Cathedral, but you're better off just skipping to the exit and avoiding that place; no level in Thy Flesh Consumed has more than four secrets. Haven't checked Doom 2.

right, every sector of a staircase (I think it's the staircase) in a secret in E4M3 is tagged as a separate secret. I checked by map hopping in GZDoom and it corrects the secret count in that level.

I could never play this game on Nightmare!. I consider vanilla Doom on UV a cakewalk, but Nightmare! is just a different story to me.

I think Arrival has disproportionated every Classic Doom item counts. Back in the day, 48 Items was a lot to find. Nowadays, 444 Items is a lot.

lol i've been playing the mapsofchaos version of this map so long i'd forgotten that the rocket launcher room isn't supposed to be full of revenants and the exit switch isn't supposed to be guarded by barons lol.
