Do I have any decluttering regret after I got rid of almost everything I own? This week I'm celebrating a huge milestone in my hoarder-to-minimalist journey, and I thought it might be fun for us to reflect back together on how far we have come. Letting go of all my stuff and becoming a minimalist changed my life forever. Simplifying has helped my family be happier, calmer, and make more space for the things that matter most and that's why I'm so passionate about sharing the joy of decluttering here! Thanks for tuning in to this very special 200k Q&A - hope you enjoy. :)

ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

I live in a very small two bedroom one bath house. I have two kids. Compared to most, I own little, however, because my house is small, it looks cluttered even tho I own less. So I agree, having space to have empty space would be appealing to me.

I am an INFJ also! I lost my mom when I was 16 and my dad 10 years later. For a long time I kept everything because I thought the memories would away if I did not have some item that belonged to them. I did not realize how freeing it was to let go of items. In my prior apartment, I had an outdoor shed that I had shoved boxes & boxes into…it was packed! My landlord wanted to use the shed for their purposes so I finally went through the shed. I thought it would take days but it only took about 6-7 hours over two days. Out of 60-70 boxes, I kept 7. 5 for me and one for each of my children. Ended up taking 3+ carloads to donation and tossed the rest. Once I realized how freeing it was, I went through my house…using the boxes from the shed and going from room to room, I took everything that was laying around and put everything into boxes, which gave me a quick win as the flat surfaces were clear, including the floor. All clothes that were not on hangers or in a dresser went into bags. Got rid of so much trash in the process. I then went through 1-2 boxes a night and did a bag of clothes on the weekend. It took a good 2 months but my resolve grew to where making the decisions to let go got easier and easier. I got rid of 30%-40% of my items. I ended up moving 2.5 years ago and did another sweep while packing & unpacking. I still find a number of items to where I am going to the donation center once every 4-6 weeks. It really is amazing how I feel after freeing myself from all the stuff. Your content is so relevant and I’ve continued to be inspired by all that you have shared.

I appreciate your staying true to yourself and your life work balance. You share details about your life that I resonant with so much with your honest revelations and your kindness. Today I decluttered a drawer filled with 15+ years of accumulated stamps, address labels, stickers, random papers and objects. It took me 3 hours to sort, organize, shred. I knew it would be a time consuming chore and that was the avoidance reason . I am so happy and commit to maintain it. You are a true inspiration.

Thank you for sharing. I found your channel in January. You have helped me so much in just a few months. I had a whole room in my house filled with emotionally hoarded items after the death of my parents. My clutter was stressing me out and making me uneasy in my own home. In the past two months, with your help, I have donated a dozen loads to the thrift store, filled several trash cans, and just this week started selling things online. I have also stopped the constant stream of items coming into the house. Now when I am shopping, I ask if this is for my "Fantasy Self" or if I am motivated by emotions and wait a few days before purchasing. Please continue to make content. You really are helping people.

I'm quite a bit older than you at age 63 and I feel like I relate to you so well! I also have difficulty making and keeping friends and I don't really know why. Part of it might be because I've always been hesitant to invite people to my home. Not because of the clutter but because of our family situation when I was a child. My dad was also an alcoholic but he was quite abusive, and he was an embarrassment to me! No, unfortunately the clutter in my house is the embarrassment 😢😢 Anyway, I just want to thank you for your channel because I look to you as being a very wise and motivating person in my life❤

I'm an INFJ too, no wonder I felt a 'connection' (which I thought was weird because who does that with a stranger on youtube, lol). Emotional/sentimental clutter is my nemesis...especially the kids' stuff. I lost so much when I was a child that I don't want them to feel that, and it's so hard to make decisions. My oldest can't let anything go and my youngest is much better at it, but I still keep asking 'are you sure, are you sure' because I don't want them to end up getting hurt or feel pressured to let things go, especially since for us a thing can represent way more than just the item itself. It's such a struggle. Thanks for being here, because it helps.

Just a small note on the size of the house: we move a lot (military family), and when we used to live in a big house we looked like great minimalists, now that we live in a small place (very small for US standards!) it feels more cluttered no matter how much I declutter. I'm definitely not a "real minimalist", more of a wannabe one, but in a big house it's easier to feel like you have less

Accidentally stumbling across your story helped me so much at the time we were having an estate sale for my deceased parents' home. And after that, the sale of the house itself. Your story of loss and learning to let go of material things - of our loved ones' things - really resonated with me. It gave me the strength to do the same, knowing that my parents will always be with me, and that I don't need to keep all of their stuff to keep their memory alive within me. I will always be grateful to you for that. Oh, and the moonwalking is on point.

Congratulations on reaching 200 K. You deserve it so much! Your videos are one of my very top 3 favourites! From watching your videos I have just decluttered another entire Rubbermaid bin of sentimental items. I’m finally at my goal after many ‘rounds’ of decluttering. I started with an entire room of items all sentimental from my childhood and earlier stages of life. About 15 years ago I got the room down to 8 large Rubbermaid bins. Then 5 years ago when I really started ‘minimalism’ and shifted my thinking and mindset and started watching KZfaq videos ( yours especially). I reduced to 4 bins and now I am down to just one large bin. I am decluttering items I never thought in a million years I would be able to let go of…my childhood dollhouse, my childhood stuffers some of them were like my ‘best friends’ because childhood was ‘traumatic’ and particularly my deceased Dad’s clothes, hats, ties, and gloves. I realized for me, fabric and clothing is so challenging. I had my childhood blanket, so much of my Dad’s clothes, an old boyfriend ( long and serious relationship) clothing items, and dresses from my grad and bridesmaid dresses. I never thought I would be able to but I cut my childhood blanket ( it was twin size)into just a small swatch (10”x 10”) and that’s all I’m keeping. And I had my Dad’s old work clothes and a couple of particular jackets that I never thought I could let go of but I did and it actually feels good. I took pictures of it all and made one photo book…that was what really helped me to be able to let go. Also, due to my stage in life, the ‘burden’ of keeping and storing the physical objects is outweighing my desire to keep them. I need to have the feeling of managing fewer items and to be more ready to downsize further at any point without the overwhelming stress. So I did it now so I could do it at a non stressful pace. I’m so glad you share and make your videos they have been such a key to helping me change my perspective and thinking which has helped me get to this point. A million times THANK YOU! ❤

I agree. I’m 73 and I know I can’t continue to manage all the stuff I have. It will over time become both physically and emotionally impossible as well as draining. If only I could persuade my husband (age 77) of that truth!

Wow congrats on the 200+K subscribers. That is awesome. Ahh. You are an INFJ, I am an ENFJ! This explains my long comments to you. That Mari Kondo episode with the widow was really good and she let go of so many things. I cried watching that one. Only 10% can curl their tongue like that? I know several (myself including) who can. That is wild that not a lot can do it. Your moon walk is so impressive. My friends always tell me they feel badly when I come over when they have messes or something and I always say, "Just be who you are." I went over to visit a close friend a couple weeks ago and usually she has things all over the place and it is cluttered, but this time it was so much better and I noticed she was missing so much of the stuff that used to sit around. She then said, "Did you notice how nice and clean my house is? When I was decluttering I thought of you and couldn't wait to show you." I never ever pressure my friends to get rid of their stuff so I find that endearing when they feel inspired by me without me saying a thing to them. I think my husband regretted decluttering one of his items, but I don't recall which it was. I think he is over it now though. I love letting go of things and never regretted it in nearly 17 years as a minimalist. I love seeing people make foods. Vlogs are nice, just to get a little understanding into one's family life, but that can be too personal for some to share too. Great video as always. Insightful and helpful.

Fun fact: those Myers Briggs tests were never meant to be a "judge if your personality" like how many people use them today. People are too complex to truly be broken down into such a limited amount of categories, and often people will categorize differently depending on the day and mood in which they test in. Instead, those tests are most accurately used IN THE WORK PLACE to help determine employee strength and weaknesses in order to develop a balanced and well-rounded team environment where each person's strength can shine. If you're (talking to everyone, not just Marissa) a person who wants to use them to guide your actions, go for it, sometimes people need to break themselves down to parts to feel they have control over their own lives (because life is chaos, am I right. 😆) But it's also always good to remember that even "within the categories" we are all complex and unique individuals and no one could ever truly be defined by one label. Just some psychology fun facts for this Sunday.

I declutterd by the Marie Kondo Method two years ago but your content gave me still lots of good ideas and motivation to look closer and go through my stuff again. Thanks for your content :)

Hi Marissa, first: congrats for having reached 200k subscribers🎉🎉!! So well derserved 👌 I am surprised that you have not yet been recognized in the public. I would definetely do if I happen to meet you in the streets of Berlin. Maybe I should keep an eye open the next time my husband and I visit our son in Berlin 😄. That would be a nice coincidence. Thanks for another interesting video 🙏 greetings from Hamburg

I had that exact experience!!! I was singing in a college solo voice class and had to stop singing as I had facial spasms!! I have never heard another person share this same experience!! I have since learned how to sing in front of people, but my professor had to be kind and work me through it. Thank you for sharing this!! I also always get told I look like "their brothers girlfriend", lol. My daughter can do a clover tongue pattern..but I cannot...this was such a fun video!! Thank you so much!! ❤

Very interesting video. I do tell people I'm a minimalist first thing. It's changed my life so much. I'm in Australia and I've found I get 2 reactions either they become defensive and justify why they like collecting stuff. Or they are very interested and want to know more. This helps me find people with like values and interests and expectations. Especially around gift giving and hand me downs. I live in a small one room granny flat. I love my grannt flat but I cannot take any extra unplanned stuff. And I don't tend to share my stuff because I'm using it all lol.

FYI: under links, if you are talking about the American shoes, Skechers, you've made the same mistake I've made for years. There is no "t" in the name. My apartment is less than a mile from a huge Skechers store. I think my brain supplied the "t" that isn't actually there. Love you & your content, only wish I had the follow through to actually do the painful emotional work. I even pay a person to come in 2x a week. We normally sit & chat 😢

You’re doing a great job, Marissa! I’m really glad you came back to the channel after your time out! 💖🤗 💐 I can relate so much to your experience in class. Also an INFJ. Thank you for this KZfaq. I don't know what a Vlog is... (video + blog?) Keep life simple is my suggestion...that is another reason I am trying to declutter. Now that I am retired I can spend time mixing that with other volunteer work or other things I am interested in. As I am not accountable to anyone for my time - I use a weekly appointment with my organizer to keep me on track. Very helpful - like a therapist. Slowly changing habits. I love the idea of being a minimalist ...still into what iffing...and finding a good home for things. Seeing your success gives me hope.

I cannot wait to see how my decluttering journey will be like in 7 years. I ve been living in a mess for almost 20 years and at this point of my life I want to feel good in my apartment. I find it easier to part with by "beautiful" and sentimental things now! I would like to get into conscious and sustainable living too but I ll take things little by little. Decluttering the material things is huuuuge step already that ditching sugar forever seems too daunting for me at this point. But I hope in time I ll be able to declutter more than material things in my life 😊 thank you for being on my journey. Your videos are helping a great deal!

I found your channel a month ago and subscribed almost immediately. I like your calming presence. I'm already quite successful at decluttering, but I find your content inspiring anyway. It reminds me to keep going. It would be great to see more content about your family perspective. Like, do your children want sometimes to buy something useless just because they want to, it's something everyone has and so on? Or they are totally on board? Do their friends understand them? Do your husband's relatives understand you? Do they bring you unneeded things sometimes? 'Cause, for example, every time my mother is spending time with my son at my house, she tries to bring A LOT of stuff I don't really need. Like, I'd had two mugs already and she brought four more 😂 Some minimalists seem to be loners and it seems easy for them to stay away from clutter, but when you have a family, it's not that easy. My son's grandparents express their love mostly by buying hundreds of toys, and it's haaaard to keep my little apartment from all this clutter (no, talking didn't help). Maybe, you have some advise?

Thank you for this video Marissa. I love watching shows about tiny houses, but don't want to live on one and my husband shares the same sentiment. And it's the reasons he doesn't like bungalows in camping sites coz he feels like he can't move. We want a big space but with less things. And also, we don't consider ourselves minimalists though we are constantly decluttering to purge our things, but if I use the word minimalism, my husband won't be on board, just like when I say we have to practice zero-waste, he is not on board, but when I say less waste, then he is for it. Hehehe. He says zero waste is very impossible, but less waste doable. ❤❤❤

Thank you so much for starting your channel. I had the same experience with this one season of Marie Kondo. I lost my Mom two years ago and my Dad left me alone to deal with all her stuff. I think because on the one hand he couldn't give her belongings away, but on the other hand he didn't need anything of her things. During my decluttering journey I found your channel and it helped me so much letting go. Thank you!
