Is the Toyota Prius still a good option to buy? Sales are dropping and people are considering the Prius as "just another car" but it actually remains the mother of all Toyota and Lexus Hybrids.
In this video we'll take a full technical deep dive into the current generation Toyota Prius to see some of it's technology and construction highlights.

After that we'll do an exterior review. Followed by an interior review of the Prius.
I will share with you some things that I dislike about the Prius.

@@GFS695 at 270k miles the first battery finally wore out. It began consuming a bit of oil around 225k miles. I replaced battery with a refurbished unit for about $1K and it lasted to around 325k miles. At that time my daughter was driving it and the shocks were pretty well worn out as well as the interior was showing significant wear. By this point it was consuming about a quart of oil every 1k miles. I decided to help her buy something newer with lower miles. Probably with a fresh battery and some suspension work it could have gone to 500k miles as long as you monitored the oil level very closely.

@@JHuffPhoto a quart of oil per 1k miles is still within the 'to be expected' range, at least if Volkswagen is to be believed. I understand you though, I also had a car with a lot of KMs, and it's not really about how long you can keep them on the road, but more about how long it makes sense to do so econonomically.

@@raftermanhoward1883 well losing more than 25% of your oil capacity every 1k miles is not good. Oh and why would I trust Volkswagen? Up until around 200k miles it used little to no oil. Still the most impressive car I have owned

Although this generation is showing its age I actually think that’s a plus for 2022. They’ve been able to master this generation and I would advise people to buy a car at the end of its generation versus the beginning. You’re likely to get a much better car, one that is more reliable despite the fact that it may not have some features that other cars may have.

I actually love how the prius looks because I don't look at it with that sporty mentality of dominating the road. I look at the prius with the mentality that it's in perfect harmony with the environment. It almost feels like it glides through the road as if instead of traversing forward, it were not really moving at all because of how connected it is with the road and the world outside the cabin. It is the definition of feeling genuine peace when driving a car. The prius carries the soul of a true electric vehicle even though it is a hybrid. Forget about being one with the car, or making it all about you. This car shows you how to reconnect with the world, to step outside your notions and socially constructed ideas about the world and reconnect with nature. Most people are not sensitive enough to understand any of what I just said. The soul of this car is truly far ahead of its time. This is the car of the distant future, a future when humanity has stopped its obsession with agressive insensitive exhilarating driving and has begun to understand the meaning of joy, the meaning of actually enjoying the scenery that is all around us. I'm really not trying to be poetic. I honestly wanted to return the cat 3 days after I bought it because it did not make me feel like an encapsulated king, but rather a citizen of this beautiful world we always zoom by without ever truly paying attention.

I love my Toyota Prius 2022. It feels like I’m driving in a luxury car even though I’m paying economy price. Maybe it’s just because I’m coming from a CX nine 2012. I’ve been really happy with it and I have consistently gotten over 55 miles per gallon on the average. The other reason I bought it is because of its reliability. @@markburch5851 The engine is the same. The Prime just has a bigger lithium battery that allows it to become a plug-in hybrid. This basically gives you a 25 mile range on battery only. Because I am retired and don’t commute far; I can do a trip of less than 25 miles and the engine doesn’t even start up. I basically have an all electric car. After playing in traveling bands for 20 ish years and traveling in a bus to carry the PA, I became a solo artist and used Toyota vans to carry my PA which was state of the art and much smaller but sounding phenomenal none the less. That went on for another 20 ish years. Those vans got me 300K miles each (2 of them). I retired from the road at 65 and soon after, I bought a 2013 Prius. I LOVE it. it now has 80K miles and is in pristine condition. I just had to replace the 12V battery last month. I've done nothing else to it whatsoever other than put gas in it. And not much gas compared to other cars. When I first got it I drove it very conservatively and could get anywhere from 55 to 65 MPG. But in my old age I've gotten a bit frisky and I now run it in the power mode most of the time and it gets about 48 to 50 MPG. I don't travel much anymore so I can afford the luxury lol! I LOVE this car. At 77 I'll drive it til the wheels fall off or I die, whichever comes first! Oh, I forgot. I did replace the tires once. And did I mention how good the sound system is? Like being in a giant set of headphones!

Great Prius review!!! I owned a Prius 2012 and now own the Prius Prime 2022. It's been a blessing to own now that gas is $5/gal and up. I can plug into a regular 120V outlet I can get 32 miles on a single charge (just enough for my work commute) and in gas mode, I average over 63MPG! It's much more pleasant to drive than my 2012 with a lot less road noise. I can now easily hear my podcasts while I drive whereas, with the older Prius, it was difficult to hear my stereo. It's not a power horse but it has more than enough power for my needs. I'm a very satisfied 2022 Prius Prime owner. Note: Out the door with taxes & license (with the $4500 rebate) I only paid $24K for my Prius.

Will keep it for many more years because it is a low fuel consumption car, real average 3,5l/100km year in and out, spacy, roomy, comfortable, very good outlooks and really reliable. haha...after owning one for 15 years (Gen 2), yeah sometimes I punt the little bus down a twisty road pretending I'm in a sports car. Despite this it really never drinks no matter what I do....rolling average of 4.1 l/100 taking it easy....as much as 5.3 l/100k worst case, without any care. I've just bought a 2019 top spec, so will be interested to see what's improved. The heat exchanger will be great as we live in a cold clime and the car has to work climbing hills from a cold start daily.

@@danmarjenka6361 In my 17 Prime, to have the mpg drop to 42mpg, I've got to be driving 84mph or I've got to be camping/sleeping overnight in it a few days in a row without plugging in. Even the most terrible winter conditions don't drop me to 42mpg. At times, I've "driven it like a sports car" and very few cars can keep up with it on twisty mountain roads. Actually, pretty much nothing can run with it on mountains with big descents and many hairpin switchbacks, after you put good tires on it, pump them up, and aren't afraid to be continuously either at full throttle or regenerative braking. Cars which are "much faster" end up with their brakes smoking if they try to not let you past. Typically, I'd catch up to a car, they'd speed up, and I'd just keep pressure on them going into every corner until I smelled or literally saw smoke from their brakes, then I'd pass them by being able to brake later than them in the next corner, finally using hard friction braking rather than mostly regen. Obviously it's not the fastest car on straight roads, but it's surprisingly good at beating people off the line, basically going 0-30 before you're even across the intersection.

Fun fact, first toyota hybrid that had efour drive was Estima since 2001 when first hybrid version of that car was introduced in Japan. But it is good to see that more models offer that enhanced hybrid 4 wheel drive. It is really working great on slippery Road conditions. So far had no problems with driving off on snow with my estima. It also had the exhaust heating of the coolant to warm up the engine faster and my car is from 2013. Was thinking that all hybrids from around that time have it too. That headlights auto leveling system is mandatory in Europe for any car that has factory HID(xenon) lights equipped.

I would add... a used Prime is one of the best ways for middle class Americans to get an EV. Due to our geography and city layouts, it just fits right in to that sweet spot of EV 80-90% of trips and no dead-charger problems on road trips.

Love my 2017 Prius, but it takes some getting used to, especially when I stop at a stop sign and the engine shuts down. The other disconcerting thing is when the brakes transition from electric to mechanical, it feels like they are failing for a brief moment. All in all, a wonderful vehicle and I’m glad that we bought it!

Since about 2015 many gas and diesel cars in the wealthier European countries shut off when the car stops at stoplights, in stopped traffic etc. Stop starting in heavy traffic takes some getting used to at least with the Prius if the battery has charge it much quieter.

As usual, love your videos, especially on Priuses. I bought my first in 2008 (2nd generation) and then traded in for a third generation in 2010; convinced my wife to get one in 2011, which we still have but passed to one of the kids. Then I got another one 2017 but my wife balked at the exterior appearance so she bought a 2016 Prius C. What I noticed is that the Prius C got a lot less mileage than the regular Prius and its engine seems to labor. I was looking at a RAV4 hybrid in 2019 but found out that there's huge class action lawsuit against Toyota because of complaints that owners are not getting the mileage as advertised, not even close. One thing I would definitely complain about the Prius starting with the third generation is the driver side headlight. It's a simple task of removing the light bulb (regular or high beam) when I need to change it but it's a pain in the rear to get my hand into the tiny space to unscrew the light bulb and I don't have huge hands. The passenger side is so much easier as there is ample of space.

Very refreshing to get a solid technical perspective from a person who spends much of their time actually working on these cars. Pleased to see the rigid frame member hopefully denying thieves the CC. The highlights you present are so practical and well thought out…they are incredibly knowledgeable and solidly affirm Toyota’s reputation for quality and longevity. Agree with you as to visibility, particularly if you are over 6’. May I also suggest you might consider adding to your very done walk through, by adding a bit more detail on all the dashboard tech that is a bit bewildering at first. I’m still getting used to the rear fire mirror placement and limited visibility. Having just purchased a new 2022 LE after a (six month wait), my goal was to buy the best in class vehicle that will reliably provide the best mpg and be as reliable and long lasting as my 2000 Land Cruiser - but a whole lot less thirsty! Many thanks for all you great work, too. You are a credit to your industry and we are all lucky to have you on our side!

This review is about AWD-e model. An interesting fact about this model about the muffler's shape, color and position. It is positioned lower (so low in fact that there is very little value in the heat shield above it) and painted dark. I owned 2021 Prius AWD-e myself and just recently (after 2 years!) noticed that when looked at friend's Prius Prime of the same year. The Prime's muffler was shiny, sat higher: very close to the aluminium heat shield at the car's bottom. The hole area was then tightly covered with plastic to improve aerodynamics and protect from the dirt. It did feel like Toyota's engineers had to come up with some hacks to allow the exhaust pilpe get under the rear differential to a point that everything does not look as sleek. This muffler's position and the cover-less design were likely responsible for the lower fuel efficiency and lower bottom clearance in the back of the car. Other ideas?
