This is a protest song about the Vietnam war! Ian Gillan was a brilliantly trained singer and even Pavarotti was a fan! Deep Purple are one of the most slept on bands of the 70’s !

This performance makes me think of the saying "LIFE ISN'T ABOUT HOW MANY BREATHS YOU TAKE, IT'S ABOUT HOW MANY TIMES YOUR BREATH IS TAKEN AWAY" !

Some of you have to react to this band with tape ... us old folk got to see them live! Add in Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Queen ... all in their heyday! Yep we were blessed.

This is real handmade music. I‘m happy to could grow up with this. Today i turn the radio off, there is nothing which can compare with this.

Great band and song. In 1970 i was 11 years old and Deep Purple was already one of my favourite bands. You really need to react to FOCUS with the "song" Hocus Pocus from The Midnight Special 1973. You will be surprised in a good way i promise you

Lying on the floor of the Cardiff 'top rank' concert venue...stoned...drunk...waiting for Cardiff band 'Budgie' circa 1982..the first time I heard this. It took me somewhere magical, weird, and exciting. I never went back.

This was nr 1 in the top 1000 of all time, for atleast 30 years in The Netherlands.

It's funny how time (sometimes) changes your perception of these things. When I was in sixth form at school, there was a fight every break for who got to put their mix tape on the stereo system. Sometimes, I'd win with (early) Queen or Horslips, and other times it would be Made in Japan by Deep Purple. At the time, whenever this track came on, I just heard it as 'screaming'. But you get wiser as you get older, and I recognise now what my school mates did way before me - that it is a masterpiece. I saw Deep Purple a few months ago (with Gillan). I've seen them several times. He can't hit anything like this range now, but he is - and certainly was - a brilliant vocalist. It's important that younger generations get to hear it, because there's absolutely nothing at this level today. One by one, all the legends are leaving us.

Music of the Gods, I was listening to this since I was a kid thanks to my amazing Dad. I saw them live 3 times (not in the 70s lol, not quite that old) and was so grateful to see them with John Lord before he died. Bloody awesome band!

Everybody is blown away when they hear this track for the first time. I'm still blown away every time I hear it.

Problem is crap corporate radio and media have ignored Deep Purple apart from Smoke on the Water. One would think Purple were simply one-hit wonders. There is a treasure trove to be mined in the Purple catalogue.

This is why people of my generation (I’m 63) pay absolutely ZERO attention to the modern music scene. We grew up with this. I’ll add a single caveat to that statement. A Japanese metal band called Lovebites have restored my faith in talent based music. Their (half of twin) lead guitarist is a classically trained pianist. The band plays “heavy metal” (their description) in its purest form. Miyako (pianist guitarist) has recently released an EP of piano covers. All metal. The last track is “Burn” which is another DP song you MUST react to. I really enjoyed this reaction. Very nicely done.

Also, so many people only know Purple for Smoke on the Water, but, growing up with this music, Smoke on the Water never registered with me as one of their best songs. There are so many Purple songs that are far, far better in my view.

This is such an iconic song and live, every instrument on that stage shines and played to perfection, it’s an instrumental and vocal masterpiece. And then Ian’s voice is so angelic at times and then does stuff that shouldn’t be possible. And the transitions during this song just keep coming. Epic performance.

This album must be played with the volume turned up to eleven, the house will then shack on its foundations.

Deep Pueple , Led Zeppelin the pioners in heavy and then metal. Just check the àlbum from DP Made in Japan, live , it's gonna blow your mind with : Lazy , Highway star , The mule with and amazing drum solo, It's a Rock'n Roll jewel to be in you discography.

People grew up with this on the radio had less access to it than you have now. You just have to choose to listen to it. 😊

I've seen a load of people in Hyde Park (London) including the Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, T.Rex, Jethro Tull, Roy Harper, etc., etc., Those really were the days to be living in.

This is why we believe we had the best music around especially in the uk

There were also 'pirate' radio stations which played music the mainstream didn't. For example, Radio Caroline which ran from a ship moored just off the coast.

Deep Purple is such a great band and rabbit hole to check out. However to be blown away again, you may not be familiar with the group Rainbow. Richie Blackmore the guitarist, left Deep Purple to form Rainbow and featured the vocals of Ronnie James Dio. Check out the song "Stargazer", another epic song with insane vocals.

People always comment how subdued the audience was here. But my understanding was they were told to sit still and be quiet because the performance was being recorded. Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, all musicians supreme so ahead of the rest it was painful. I miss Jon Lord to this day. Don't get me wrong Zeppelin and Sabbath were legendary bands but for me Purple particularly Mark 2 left them all in the shade. So glad you checked out something beyond Smoke on the water.

In the seventies rock radio was different. Rock radio was called AOR (album oriented radio). Rock stations would receive an album and would play the songs they wanted or were requested by their listeners. Deep Purples original members reunited in the 80s and put out the album Perfect Strangers. Check out the title track and Knocking At Your Back Door from it. 🤘

From Australia , great reaction to the legendary DEEP PURPLE , the best British classic rock band of the late 60s early 70s no question about it , to see them live at that time was unbelievable , all individual virtuoso musicians of there instruments , Peace from down under.

Music of my teenager-time..... We had no internet, no smartphones but always knew what was going on in the music scene...... Certain radio-station were preferred, and the music directly recorded from radio (horrible quality of course). Mouth to mouth propaganda, going to concerts, reading music-newspapers...these had been the main information sources....... I remember Child in Time was a difficult song to dance on......slow beginning....cling-time !!!!....and then the -we called it "steam-rock" part....time to play air-guitar.....and then the final...cling again or not???? But now you may understand what expectations my generation has when it comes to "good music". Furthermore you may understand why Nightwish has a lot of fans in the elder generation....... To quote uncle Henk Poort: Good music is good music.

Highway Star and Child In Time are play list for me. Zeppelin, Sabbath and Deep Purple were known as the "Unholy Trinity" of hard rock in the 70s....worth going through their catalogues they are all masterful.

yep. That was pretty much my reaction when I first heard this song and saw this video only about 3 years ago. Mind. Blown. Have watched it 100s of times since then; never get bored of it, nor of seeing the reaction of other people seeing/hearing it for the first time. Great reaction!

This is the kind of reaction the song deserves. Luckily you have the live in Denmark 1972 videos to go through (Highway Star, Lazy, Strange Kinda Woman), and the California Jam 1974 stuff with David Coverdale and GFlenn Hughes singing (Burn, Mistreated). And trhen there's all the off shoots - Rainbow, Whitesnake, Gillan. Enjoy.

IMHO Deep Purple is the most musically gifted among the Unholy trio, which includes Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Beyond Smoke on the Water, there are so many great tunes from this killer band that aren't played on the radio enough!

Huge Nightwish fan here, but I am first and foremost a Deep Purple fan! 💜 My Deep Purple story It was the summer of 1989 and I was 13. My friends were all into the big 80s pop, hair metal, etc., so I was into that scene, too. I didn't know I had a choice. I didn't know what else existed, to be honest. One day, my ex-stepfather (who was only very briefly in my life) was doing something in the garage, jamming to some music. Bored, I wandered in and asked what band he was listening to. He was incredulous that I was unfamiliar with the song that was playing. So, he sat me down on the concrete garage floor (felt cool on a hot day), put gigantic headphones over my ears and fired up his 8-track player. From the opening second of Deep Purple's _Burn,_ I was hooked. Out poured the most powerful, transformative sounds I'd ever heard. The experience literally transfixed me. I had never heard anything like it, and it was magical. I ended up listening to the entire 8-track in one session, without ever getting up from that concrete floor. Through every lineup and stylistic change, I've been happily hooked on Deep Purple ever since. 💜

The studio version from “Deep Purple in Rock” is jaw dropping as is the guitar solo .. possibly Ritchie’s best studio solo … improvised over two takes when they only had 20 minutes left of studio time to finish the track. The live version from made in Japan is a beautifully recorded snapshot of this band at their peak. No one could touch them live. Saw them in 1972. Still the best live musical experience I’ve ever had.

We ve been rockin with this all of our life's and also with Burn, Highway star, Storm bringer, Fireball, Strange kind of woman, Hush, You keep on moving and many many many more of Deep Purples catalogue. And also Smoke on the Water... Why not? One of the greatest ever.

As a child of the 70’s, we had the most outstanding music of all time…no auto tune, just straight out amazing musicianship. Each of the bands of this era built their success on originality. Not sameness, but true Rock and Roll creativity. Thank you for recognizing this. My 70’s of listening to this music was truly amazing

Life long Deep Purple fan (and now Nightwish!!! ;) ). I'm 62 and grew up with this band. "In Rock" (the album this song is from) was the first album I ever bought. My personal favorite Deep Purple song is "Lazy." I'm obviously biased, but I think we grew up with the best music of all time in the late 60's through the 70's with the bands who were the titans of rock

That was a great reaction - i was 17 when i first heard this song and couldn't stop listening to it i think it was 5 times straight off! Someone needs to mention to you that there were multiple personel changes with deep purple - this version is mark two ( my personal favourite) with ian Gillan on vocal , roger glover on base , jon Lord on keys , Ritchie blackmoor on guitar ian Paice on drums. regarding mark one DP Hush is the best track to listen to.Regarding mark two anything from 1972 - the made in japan live performances are great. Ritche Blackmoor controlled the band and is rumoured to be very difficult hence multiple changes and then the band morphed into Rainbow and White snake before re-emerging as Deep Purple - current line up has ian gillan back with Roger glover but no Ritchie blackmoor, yes they arestill going!! . They sadly lost Jon Lord . Probably easiest if you read the history on Wykipedia for the full details . i'll leave it to someone else to tell you about the other incarnations. Everyone has to decide for themselves which versions they like best. Highway star , black night, strange kind of woman all good. I think that you are in an equal state of innocence about led zeppelin- if you dive deeper you are going to be blown away. Also you need to go further back ie the sixties - rolling stones, Beatles , Cream, Yardbirds , Animals, the who and many more . The thing about these bands is that they are as good as people say they are - it isn't hype .If you dive back further you will understand how this music evolved. Deep Purple are still touring, with the same singer, drummer and bass player. They are all in their late 70s and still rocking!

They have so many great songs, Highway Star, Lazy, Strange kind of woman, Perfect strangers, Knockin' at your backdoor. I'm 45 and grew up on this music including the many classic greats like Jethro Tull, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and grew into Nightwish, Ayreon, Epica, Jinjer, Unleash The Archers, and Arch Enemy. It's crazy how much the music changes and talent grows through the years.

Once upon a time in the 80's I saw him singing live, during his stint with Black sabbath whilst Ozzie was in the naughty corner.

Seen them in concert back when I was a teenager, saw many of the greats back then when you had to be able to play instruments and sing to be able to get up in front of a crowd, God bless

I was lucky enough to see DP live twice. They were in the Guiness book of records for the loudest band back then.

I Was a pre teen back then but loved even then the music taalantvout there for tou and your GENARATION to still be listing to this it warms my heart to know it's still appreciated and loved listened to some 5 decades on

You're right dude, I was a teenager during the '70's and the radio only played these songs when they were requested because they didn't fit the 3 minute time slot like all the pop songs at the time so i didn't really listen to the radio a lot since I was too busy buying all of these amazing albums that included Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Black sabbath, Uriah Heep, Alice cooper and Pink Floyd then later on Steely Dan, Return to Forever, Al Di Meola, Jean Luc-Ponty. The radio was playing a lot of The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, Elton John and other commercial acts. We were spoiled for choice, it was a great time.

Better late than never. Been a deep purple fan from the beginning. Managed to hang on to a few LPS and one 8 track. And on this side of the pond we had Iron Butterfly. Another Hidden Gem Iron Butterfly hit it big with the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida 17 minutes of wow Epic drum solo. And Butterfly Bleu. For most it was their introduction to the talk box. There's a video of them performing butterfly Bleu on live television commercial free for over 20 minutes. Don't say you were told ✌️🤠🏞️🐂
