This week we head to the iconic El Questro station, our last major stop on the Gibb. We cut our Gibb trip short because this place was closing and hope it won't disappoint us.
We started by taking the 25km of BITUMEN from the Pentecost river to the station. After getting rattled to bits on the Gibb you have no idea how nice it feels to be on Bitumen roads again.
Once at El Questro, which changed ownership a few years back from being a privately owned cattle station, to now being part of the G'Day Caravan Parks group, we went straight to Zebedee Springs. The water here is a comfortable 32 degrees Celsius all year and even though we only planned on being here for about an hour, we were still basking in the bathtub warm water when we were asked to leave as it was almost 12pm, which is when the private tours get Zebedee all to themselves.
So we packed up and headed over to Amalia gorge, a hot but very picturesque walk to a dried up waterfall. Not many people go here as they try and rush through all the main things at El Questro but this place has a nice cool waterhole at the end and if the waterfall was flowing would have been an absolute gem!
After checking in to the campground, we were told about a little swimming hole close by and we went to check it out.
The next day we took off for what we will call the highlight of our Gibb trip, El Questro Gorge. To get there you have to traverse a 1m deep water crossing, which the Mog made look easy (normal 4wds were drying out their footwells in the camping area for days). The gorge itself is absolutely stunning! It is hard to describe in words, so we will just let the raw experience (no music) soak in our video. It was one of our favorite spots in Australia!
The next morning we went to watch the sunrise at pigeon hole lookout and spotted a huge saltwater croc in the river below us. On our way back down in daylight, we realized how steep and rough the track up there actually was! Afterwards we also checked out Branco's Lookout. To get here you get close to the The Homestead, the luxurious side of El Questro (but also very expensive). The crossing of the Chamberlain river is very rocky and rough, but has a beautiful view. El Questro is closing for the season today, so we head back, take another quick swim in Zebedee Springs and head to the gate (which was locked haha). We ended up making it out and heading back to the Pentecost, where we will start our next adventure, the Karunjie Track!
PS: Please do some research before hitting the tracks, since they can change quickly and might be closed again!

Come to Australia: where everything is trying to eat you. That croc and the spiders would be enough for me but you guys seem happy to glide through it!!? The drone is great for those inaccessible places too - well done with that. And the music choices are smooth too. For some of those off road sections I would have used the 1812 Overture or the ride of the Valkyries!!!X

Haha yup that's Australia. Once you get here you quickly shrug it off though, except for the crocodiles, they are serious. Sadly we are limited in the music we can use through the license that we hold, so some things aren't available.

I can't believe our government is so shortsighted and inflexible that they can't give you both an unlimited visa to stay in the country. You have done so much as Europeans to advertise this country as a unique travel destination, both in the past and for future travellers. You are worth a fortune to Australia. We do have Australians making travel videos, but that is nothing like having Europeans describing their travels here with the credibility of commentators unbiased by parochialism. You also deserve praise and admiration for the way you adapted to the COVID limitations by bootstrapping yourself to build your own brilliant Expedition Vehicle, which I am sure has been both an inspiration and education to others to do the same. I also admire the way you have adapted to fruit picking to finance your stay. I did this myself when I was young, so I know how physically demanding and mentally stultifying the work is and speaks voumes for how much you were prepared to suffer to enjoy this country. I presume you have explored the option of going to New Zealand and applying for another tourist visa as so many of my university students have? Failing that, I wish you both all the best for the next stage of your lives. If the German Government was blessed with insight, they'd buy you a modern 535 Unimog with a Helgeth 6x6 conversion, hydrostatic suspension and Expedition Camper and let you loose on the world to demonstrate the superiority of Unimogs and German engineering. At least you wouldn't have your teeth rattled anymore by a 40-year-old Australian military vehicle trying to cope with Aussie corrugations.

I wouldn’t risk driving a modern unimog stuffed with delicate electronics in Australia at all; it would fucking break down there. Modern Unimogs suck.

Yes it has been a challenging road, and while we try and stay away from politics on this channel, we do agree that politics these days are too reactive instead of being proactive. Instead of planning ahead they seem to just react to what seems like the "most pressing subjects" at the time. Sadly the same is happening in Germany and many other countries around the world... As for new Unimogs, I actually like the simplicity of the older models, granted there is some room for improvement (especially in power), but we are actually planning another futureproofed build so stay tuned for that!
