This is a test of the 125 gr 3 blade Deepower 1.25" Solid Broadhead, sold on Amazon. Here is the link: www.amazon.com...
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the 125 gr Deepower 1.25" Solid posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Deepower 1.25" 125gr Solid Score: 85.11 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 15 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Deepower got 15 pts.
2. Cut Size (20%, 15 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.875" = 5.25 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.875" = 5.25 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.65 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 250 grs = 9.5/10= 9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +50 grs = 9/10 = 8.1 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (10/10=2 pts replacement blades not sold at this point).
4. Penetration (20%, 16.46 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.75" = 6.75 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(60 layers= 7.71 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.75 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (4.75 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: +1 for incredible price
TOTAL SCORE: 85.11 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
Price: $4.66/head on Amazon, link posted above

The key with the 344 is to make sure u get each edge to 44* and a burr with the 240 grit before moving on to the next grit. Most the work is done changing the original 60* angle to 44*. Once u hit 1200 they r really sharp. Take them to 2500 then polishing oh boy three blade heads can get very sharp.

So you can’t lay the head down flat? I’ve gone from 220-1000 grit, cuts paper great without folding over the paper but I can rub my finger across blade and not cut my finger. How do recommend getting the right angle if you can’t lay the head down flat on the sand paper? Thank you.

using these currently, performed great with higher FOC arrows but i increased the durability of these MIM (metal injection molding) broadheads by heat treating and tempering them in the oven 400* 1.5hrs. holds edge retention and sharpness a lot longer and the tip hardness is also improved. imo the rock hardness improves from common kitchen knife steel to something closer to tool steal.

Sharpness doesn’t really affect penetration nearly as much as people think. I’ve dulled broadheads with a file and they penetrate almost the same as those that are razor sharp. Sharpness does affect bloodletting though, as it cuts tissue more effectively and cleanly.

I got the 100 grain version after watching your review of the previous model. Out of two different packs I had some very erratic flight upwards of 10 inches of variation out of a bow that shoots larger fixed blades very well (magnus stinger). Maybe I just got some bad heads but they spun perfectly. Only thing I haven’t done is check the weights but I wouldn’t expect to miss my target entirely from a slight weight variation. Might try them again because I like the design and obviously the price.

@@greekmaster1001 that was my old bow so I’ll try again but it would stack magnus and alien heads on top of my field points then about half the deepower would fly way off my point of aim. Some of the deepower heads would fly well, others would constantly hit in the same spot off the mark but in different spots depending on which one I shot, leading me to believe the bow wasn’t the issue.

Well, I cannot test every batch. I can only test the ones that I have. And those performed as shown in the video. But anytime you are purchasing a lower cost head, there is usually going to be a quality control difference versus a very expensive head.

I'm sceptical with the use of stay sharp guide. What did it do to the pyramid tip? I imagine that the pyramid will be hollowed on all of its three sides causing the pyramid to be weakened considerably. The previous strength test is all nulled and void!

It didn't affect the pyramid tip at all. And it didn't affect the durability by any quantifiable amount. You'd be surprised by how little steel is removed...just a few grains.

I’ve watched some penetration tests and through these tests they found that if a broadhead is longer than their cutting diameter then they got deeper penetration. Have you noticed this at all with all the testing you have done? Also, it would be nice to weigh each broadhead in the packs you receive to see how closely they compare. Do you also do spin tests on all the broadheads in the packs to see if they are all straight? Thank you for all the testing that you do. It really does help with choosing what broadhead I will be using.

i been waiting for this test. i have 18 heads that are VERY similar in design. they have been great, i found the easiest way to sharpen them is on my flat nicholson single cut file, only takes a few strokes to shave hair. these style heads are by far the best deal going. i would honestly choose these over QAD exodus...and i did. the only thing i dont like is that they eat up expensive foam broadhead targets REALLY fast.

I bought the Deepower pack of 100's over a year ago. I have the soft foam Hornet broadhead targets & I didn't want to pull that head back out of it. I have a couple of self healing foam targets by SEVR that I shoot my Valkyrie broadheads into. If I shoot a Valkyrie into the foam target I actually have to shoot it with 2 Hornets stacked one in front of the other & back it up with a bag target I made. Just don't want to shoot any arrow that goes through everything & then hits a backstop behind it. I'm on flat ground @ 🏡 & I do shoot 3D targets from up in a 🌳 so there's no backstop needed there.

@josephtreadlightly5686
@josephtreadlightly5686 Жыл бұрын
@@yourmomma2995 Yeh, the 3D targets I use my field points. The Valkyrie system is very different. They make field points with the same Centerpin system that the broadheads have. That means they r match grained to the broadheads. Both the Broadheads & field points have a very high tolerance type of steel that they fly the same as long as all your arrows r the same & tuned perfectly to your bow. But with that system with the field points I have 4 to 5 inches sticking out the backside. It's great for training your brain where the exit hole is when shooting @ different angles & distances from up in a 🌳. More people should very doing it so u get familiar to what is a good shot & what is not. It's not about distance but angle. I use the smaller Delta McKenzie targets so everytime I'm up in the 🌳 practicing I can put 1 in the heart & 1 double lung shot. That's 8 arrows & then I come down from the 🌳 & check the backside of the target.

In that case quartering to I hit the deer in the chest to the side of the shoulder closer to the neck so the arrow exits right behind the opposite front leg. The deer is close so I am ready & waiting for that front leg to be back & not in a forward position. That way the angle of the shot allows the head to cut through the thoracic cavity & since the opposite side front leg is forward it exits on that side well in front of the diaphragm. Over time I can get every shot along with the deer going down on video. Sometimes the deer gets just out of the view of the camera but u can hear it crash. I hunt tight quarters & a dead deer going 100 yards due to property lines has lost me the ability of a recovery. But everywhere I hunt I have to hunt the fringe & it's always gun season in my area during the rut. With over 30 deer per square mile the opportunity is there but the methods I use dictate whether I can hunt there or some city slicker that just moved into the area to shut me down for good. It's the reality I live in.

I can't remember the last time I hunted a high fence place...but I have no problem doing it...especially for hogs.
