This is a test of the 125 gr, 4 blade modular VBS Broadhead, by Vector Custom Shop--both the 7/8" bleeders & 1 1/8" bleeders.
For sharpening, consider using the Stay Sharp Guide "C" Sharpener, for curved blades.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of the VBS (7/8" bleeder) posted in parentheses as well.
Total VBS 125gr w/7/8" Bleeders Score: 88.47 = 9 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 15.13 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score (1.19 +.875"/2.5" x 7 = 5.78 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score (5.78 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score (1.19"/2 x 6 = 3.57 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18.1 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 125 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +50 grs=9/10=8.1 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Pen Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 pt is deducted from 10
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grs of pressure
A utility razor blade: 200 grs
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
...
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (5/10=1 pts) Use the Stay Sharp Guide "C" Sharpener.
4. Penetration (20%, 17.09 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (7.25" = 7.25 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score (61 layers=7.84 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 18.65 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8.5/10 = 4.25 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (8/10 = 2.4 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thick, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
VBS 7/8" Bonus: +1 excellent flight
+1 extra sharp blades
+1 modular design
+.5 extra thick blades (.057")
Total Score 7/8"= 88.47 = 9 Golden Arrows
Total Score 1 1/8"=87.47 = 9 Golden Arrows
Price = $23/head (Use Discount Code: LUSK for free ship)
Grading Scale:
90-100 10 Golden Arrows
85-90 9
80-85 8
70-80 7

I use Iron Will and they are a very hard A7 tool steel. The hardness of these broadheads are less prone to rolling over. I had a pass through breaking two ribs and burying about 8" into the dirt. Broadhead took no damage and only took roughly two minutes of sharpening to get a razor edge back

I'm guessing all these configs net out to the same weight, hence the venting for the wider secondary blade, and some shape difference for the primary blades. This would make sense from an engineering/trajectory standpoint, but I think I would explore other options to keep each secondary blade option in the same durability zone. Separately, THANKS for the discount !!! You really take care of us.

One thing I'd love to see added to your tests is flight noise. I know I'll probly catch flack for saying this is of all my hunting and reading. That a deer hears the arrow coming vs "jumping the string". The few experiments I have done I found broad heads with no holes are alot quieter. Anyhoo thought it would be a great thing to add. How to fully do it not sure? Maybe put a microphone next to the target while your doing the flight test.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have sure considered doing it. But there are a few obstacles. First, I don't have a long enough quiet place to do that test. Outside, there is so much variation in ambient noise that it would be difficult to really compare the noise of one head to another on different days. Inside, I need enough distance away from the sound of the shot....and also a very quiet place. I don't have that. On a separate note, I really don't worry about arrow flight noise at all. Bow noise is huge cause an animal can pinpoint the origin--you! But a moving object could be a bird or bug for all they know. I've taken hundreds of animals and never seen it to be an issue. It may be...but I just haven't seen it or see how it could be. And I already use loud vanes--Blazers attached helically, so my arrows are already pretty loud as it is. All that said, if I have a choice, all other things equal, I'd choose a solid blade over a vented cause they are quieter.

Unless you're shooting some 80lbs monster bow or a crossbow i'd choose a smaller cut for hogs, more chance for passtrough and even an inch wide cut will kill the hog if you hit it in the vitals.

One other thing John is I feel that there is a design flaw in the VBS. I know I can't shoot these with HIT's due to the rear of the bleeders are tight against the end of the arrow shaft. I was practicing with one and after a few shots into foam the bleeders left divots in the carbon. If I decide to shoot them I will have to go to a sturdier outsert. Probably the sharpest broadhead out of the box I have EVER tested!
@LuskArcheryAdventures

I received these and the MD3's. My sharpness tester showed the same thing ....crazy sharp out of the box for the VBS but not so much on the MD3. I am sure the steel is SO hard that it's tough to get them "razor?" For some reason my VBS impact low at 50-80 yards compared to my Iron Will's 🤔....I wonder if it's because my VBS are the vented model (100g/1.25"/7/8") and have a little more drag vs my IW being solid single bevel left?

Just got mine in the mail and I'm a bit disappointed...the blades aren't sticky at all, they dont clean cut paper nor can they even cut a hair
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures Жыл бұрын
Well that is disappointing. They’re not very difficult to sharpen, though. You can use any cylindrical or round sharpening rod and do it by free hand, or use the Stay Sharp “C” sharpener for curved blades.

@Lusk Archery Adventures Ive sent a email and hope they can make it right because I really like these heads, until then I guess I better order the "C" Sharpener

I'm thinking 1-1/2" with 7/8" bleeders make awesome big bear, moose and hog head from any bow or crossbow, 👍👍👍

Out of all the fixed broadheads that’s you have test which one do you think has ultimately done the best overall in your test?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures Жыл бұрын
Good question, and really impossible to answer--cause set ups and shot distances and sizes of animals can all vary so much. That being said, I do rank them all in the Overall Score and I am posting a spread sheet in a couple weeks, on my annual Year End Summary video, that will have ALL the scores for each test category for 2022. It can easily be arranged in a ranking of any of the scoring categories, so everyone can make those determinations.

On his podcast with Aron snyder he continually remarks the qad exodus as the best broadhead all around. Price, durability, cut, flight, it's a great head for the money

@@feelsgooddoit my opinion is that it’s the best fixed head to. I made the switch to them last year after watching bunch of his videos and they met me expectations. Really don’t have anything bad to say about them and nothing but praises for them

@@eckertoutdoors6194 I personally don't use them, I have an affinity for really pricey heads. The qad and alot of similar heads will all fit the bill. Top heads for me l, sevr, swhacker, cutthroat 3 blade, valkyrie, md3, although I've never gotten my hands on the md3 because they are out of business.

Can be for sure. But Stay Sharp Guide’s “C” Sharpener is designed for all curved blades. That helps. They also sell replacement blades.
