If you DO have the bigger equipment...USE it!! Past years I broadcasted the seed and hoped for a rain to get it washed in. Last year no rain for 3 weeks after broadcasting. I planted 1 3/4 acre (4 plots) of turnips and rape last Tue. & Wed. and planted into soil moisture. I have a 10' IH disk that I can adjust the pitch of the blades and set it for about a 1/2"-1" soil mix after broadcasting. One week later and the surface is turning green with turnips and rape. Looks like 90%+ germination so far! I'll have a good 4 weeks jump on last years planting. I won't do the broadcasting and hope for rain again.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
With the exception of a no till drill, you need rain either way to germinate the seed. Even with a no till drill, no rain for 3 weeks equals dead seed, unfortunately. In particular small seeds like clover and brassica.

You should do a honest seed review and put 1 acre of your seed vs 1 acre of a bad seed blend/company and 1 acre of a seed company that's in box stores that is good (from what I seen of Domain there seed looks really good)
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
All you have to do is read the labels 😉 "insert matter" of more than 15-20% = very bad. Rye grass is bad in any blend. Oats and rye or wheat mixed with a brassica blend is very bad. Sugar bears in a brassica blend is very bad. "Seed coatings" of more than 10% is very bad. The point is man, I wish I had plots to throw away to test those blends. But after doing this for 3 decades I've learned not to repeat my own mistakes or those of others. Again, all you have to do is read the label...

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I get that it would just be cool to see maybe 1 plot that has them in just to show what a good plot vs non good plot.. sometimes it's easier to follow seeing the side by side but I 100% get not wasting food plot potential and messing up a spot maybe somewhere down the road in some way you can show case your seed vs others it would be cool to see

I've never had stands in my plots unless 1 in a corn access BB lowing my scent back across the corn for a hunting plot in the early season...very specialized and strategic setup. I always walk thru plots to get to stands ..if during the daylight when the deer aren't there and you can't spook deer. Then NEVER during dark hours... NEVER. I've been consistent with that stuff and not walking thru plots and having blinds in plots or where you can spook deer on plots, since 1995. Sorry Travis...but you get an F for today 😉 I've never had blinds and stands in plots...never walk thru plots during dark hours...never spook deer off of plots. All facts you missed... There are many bad, food plot hunters out there online and on TV...most of them. I am not one of them 👍

Is it possible to just broadcast and seed the weeded and grassy area then spray the 2 qt glyphosate and 1pt 2,4-d per acre rather than spraying 3 times then planting on the last spray. I’m also supplementing the soil with lime and fertilizer so if it’s knee high to waste high weeds and grasses is it possible to get a good catch rather than spraying and killing 3 times?

Once a year for a good fall hunting plot?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle, it is not. The dead and dying weeds will shade out the plants and not let them grow, and some will keep the seed from even reaching the ground. I truly wish you could! Also, the 2-4D lives in the ground for up to 2 weeks and can kill germinating broadleaf plants...like clover, brassica, peas, buckwheat, etc.
