For those of you who may be inexperienced at fishing Robert gave a great display of how you reel down on a fish without putting slack in the line or taking the bend out of the rod. Super job as always DeerMeat, halibut nuggets for days. What a thrill. My uncle was station in Kodiak with the Coast Guard during the middle 70s. They would catch those beasts on the reg and would shoot them boat side to get em in the boat, hey it was the70s, so shooting was always on the table. 🤣

I was more focused on getting to the spot and getting started… it’s pretty sketchy taking a little rental boat 30 miles into the gulf of Alaska. I was paying ultra close attention to the motor function and boat…. Luckily, due to darting countless alligators, I’ve become halfway decent at getting things out together quickly. Once I saw it was a big one, I loosened the drag so it could start going back down slowly until I got ready… it all worked out and I’m thankful for that!

Rob amazing fish brother. When I was younger myself and 2 of my cousins pulled in a halibut that size over in Norway in a Norwegian rowboat. How we did it without flipping the boat God only knows. And we were not using rod and reel. We were doing traditional Norwegian drop line handline fishing. 3 teenagers and muscles. We got lucky and we caught it right outside of the harbor of the small fishing village where my family is from. Ongrats on your PB brother. You can get a lot of the same fish in them same cold waters in both Alaska and Northern Norway where my family is from. Fishing was our hustle when I was there and we had a fish processing plant right on the dock in the village. So by the end of the season it paid for my trip over and my trip over the following Year. If I wasn't working on families fishing boats. Me and my cousins were out there in a rowboat. Lol I wish I was in the shape I was in back then lol. But once again great video. Only wish I was there and in better shape than I am now after surgery. Stay safe safe travels and God bless you Sarah the girls and your crew brother. I'm on a long road of healing right now and I know that it's gonna be a ruff road. But I'll get there one day at a time.

That's right, I forgot that in my story of longlineing out of Homer Alaska. We would make 4 or 5 sets, and I would toss out a handline, using herring, bacon and tinfoil. No, I'm not kidding. Caught my biggest barn door doing that. About 145 pounds. We were getting $1.00 per pound in 1972. I was 14 years old and the fish weighed more than me. It was actually a lot easier to bring up than with a rod and reel. Our step mom caught the biggest of all of us. 242 pounds, out of Kodiak, in the 80s.

I’m so jealous of this guy, I’ve been a North Atlantic commercial fisherman since the early 70’s , an accomplished chef, a carpenter , a bartender and all around people/seafood/maritime lover now working in a seafood shop in St. Augustine, Florida and just can’t imagine being able to do these adventures. And I love the relationship and he has with his little girl, she so cute and smart, not to mention one hell of a fishergirl. C’mon down to St. Augustine and we’ll go catch some Mahi, Yellowfin and Swordfish together, as I haven’t done it yet but know this skipper could put us on some fish 🎣 God bless you Capt!
