In 1983, Def Leppard's 3rd album 'Pyromania' was literally selling at #2 on the US charts behind Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' (biggest record of all time) and ended up selling 10 million copies thanks to MTV promotion... Def Leppard went from young band to superstars in just 4 years. This album was recorded in 1982, before drummer Rick Allen's accident in late 1984 in which he lost his left arm... original guitarist Pete Willis recorded 'Pyromania', but was fired before it was finished because his alcoholism was affecting his studio performances. Guitarist Phil Collen joined and added some guitar solos & finished the record... he appeared in the music videos and on tour, and is still in Def Leppard today. Def Leppard played their first shows after Rick Allen's accident in 1986... the 'Hysteria' album was finally completed in 1987, but the band had lost the commercial momentum from 'Pyromania' being gone for 3 years... 'Hysteria' initially sold 3 million copies, which was not enough to recoup the studio costs of making it... Thankfully, the single 'Pour some sugar on me' exploded in the summer of 1988 and 'Hysteria' eventually outsold Michael Jackson's 'Bad' album... It was the last album to feature guitarist Steve Clark, who succumbed to drug & alcohol addiction and passed away in early 1991... Def Leppard's 1992 album 'Adrenalize' had to be recorded w/ Phil Collen playing all the guitars - both his and Steve's parts, which had been written before his death. More Def Leppard - "Let's get rocked" ... 'Armageddon it' ... 'Tonight' ... 'Work it out' ... 'Promises' ... 'Rocket' ... 'Too late for love' ... 'Let it go' ... 'Hello America'... 'Wasted' ... 'Gods of war'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘

Vivian Campbell replaced Steve Clark in 92. He is amazing, great fit, and a heck of a resume (Ronnie James Dio, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Lou Gramm, Billy Gibbons on his solo album, etc.). Last I heard he was being treated for Hodgkins Lymphoma. Hope he is doing well 🙏🏼

A big key to Def Leppard’s sound was notoriously meticulous producer Mutt Lange. Mutt produced their next LP “Hysteria” which propelled them to superstar status. He also produced AC/DC’s “Back in Black” album and went on to produce for (and marry) Shania Twain. They later divorced.

Did you notice that this was pre-accident, when Rick Allen had both arms. Just listening to him before and after, you wouldn't notice the difference. A tribute to strength of character with a little help from his friends.

Oh man, we were all so young! Def Leppard is one of my favorite bands, and the first time I was actually older than the dude I was crushing on - I’m 3 months older than Rick Allen.

Saw them play Hastings Pier in '79 or '80, when I was 17 and they were probably a few years older. All poodle perms and lycra/leather. A lifetime ago. I think Tygers of Pantang were on the same night. Started at 7pm probably, and we were home by 11 or maybe earlier!!

1980s videos and lyrics were so creative and over the top, this album made people go nuts due to heavy rotation on MTV

Good song. This came out in 83 and Rick Allen's accident happened on NY eve of 84. their lead guitarist Steve Clark died in 91 sadly. He pretty much frank himself to death. I remember when these guys first came out with a song called Light Brigade. I loved it.They were like 16-17 years old.I knew they were gonna be big.

I got Pyromania the week it came out in '83. I was a Junior in H.S. and it was a hit at our school. I eventually had it on cassette, vinyl and CD. All at the same time.

"I wish it was louder", what everyone who has ever listened to Def Leppard says. Which brings up a conundrum, I had to ban myself from listening to Def Leppard as a kid because I started having ringing in my ears and got scared for my hearing. Always put the speakers of my boom box right up to my head. They didn't originally call themselves "Deaf" Leopard for nothing.

Pyromania came out in 1983. About a year later, Rick Allen had his accident in his Corvette and lost his arm. The seat belt ripping his arm off.
