I agree, Dave. I was about 12 or 13 when Pyromania came out. I do remember having High N Dry when I was about 11 and nobody in my 6th grade class liked them. I laughed when they ALL loved Pyromania and specifically this video on MTV 2 years later. Cheers!

Speaking as a drummer, one of the most impressive things about Rick is the fact that after the accident (with one arm) it never changed his sound. Who he is as a musician never changed. If you don't know when each song was released you'll never be able to tell by his sound. Impressive!

Rick Allen is a great drummer. His best work can be heard on the first two albums, On through the Night and High and Dry, especially High and Dry. As far as his drumming on Pyromania, Hysteria for sure, this is not Rick Allen playing. It is a Fairlight instrument sampler (drum machine). Rick did come back and play the real cymbals on Pyromania but they programmed a drum machine for all his parts on these albums. This at the time (1982) had nothing to do with his arm as that event took place on New Years eve, 1984, two years later. So not to burst anyones bubble, but the reason his drumming didn't change was it was not him.

What about the legendary drummers Frank Beard (of Zz Top) and Phil Philthy Animal Taylor (of Motorhead) cuz they're both at least to me slightly better than Rick Allen. Rick Allen is still one of the greatest drummers of all time but so are Frank Beard and Phil Taylor as well.

I just wanna say R.I.P. to the RIFFMASTER Steve Clark. He was their guitarist before he sadly passed away from alcoholism in 1991 at only 30 years old. If it weren’t for him, Def Leppard wouldn’t have these amazing bangers that they had in the 80s. Just listen to that main riff! Inspired by Led Zeppelin’s “In The Evening”. Musical genius gone too soon! ❤❤❤

When talking about 80s Def Leppard, fans often forget to mention Robert John "Mutt" Lange. He produced the albums High 'n' Dry, Pyromania, & Hysteria. Even co-wrote all of the songs in the latter two, which are both certified diamond in America, plus Adrenalize except for one track. Easily one of the most successful music producers of all time, generating or co-generating other diamond & multiplatinum albums for Shania Twain, AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars, Bryan Adams, etc...

The opening line for this song ( Gunter, glieben, glauchen, globen ) was done by producer Robert “Mutt” Lange. It’s is nothing more than German sounding gibberish to represent the traditional “1, 2, 3, 4”. It made the song sound much more intriguing and mysterious and it definitely did the job.

I remember Jordan reacting to this song. And when he reacted to The Offspring's Pretty Flie For a White Guy, he immediately recognized the intro line of Rock of Ages. I still don't know what is being said and what it really means. I heard in an interview that music producer Mutt Lange (Shania Twain's now ex-husband) got tired of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, so he made up this phrase and for some reason it is on the record. Def Leppard sometimes jokes about it and says it means we should buy their albums.

We still use these categories today. AC/DC of a course head banging Rock, Pink Floyd psychedelic Rock. Def Leppard check the number one spot in the party rock. Their music was the anthem of my generation because we so loved to party in the 80s. Later we had to put in the category stadium Rock. And shuffle a few things around. I'm 45 so the 80s was definitely my era, and what I find interesting is that all the young folks in their 20s are wearing band shirts from the 70s and 80s. I think there's a reason for this. There was a study showing that the standard deviation of musical notes in music today is considerably lower than it was 30-40 years ago. To phrase this more academically, music today lacks creativity and harmony. You can't just strum a guitar and bang on drums randomly, right? There has to be a message and synchronicity and harmony and it all has to flow together, and when modern music fails to deliver that, people look for alternatives and since the future isn't here yet they're looking to the past. I think this parallels the movement of society to idealize acquiring as many things that have already been invented rather than to actually invent them. The world is becoming increasingly corrupt.

"It's better to burn out than to fade away" they haven't done either. Still kickin' it on the stadium tour!!! Check out "Kick" and "This Guitar" off of the new album "Diamond Star Halo".

DL are great people. They have been through stuff. Their drummer losing an arm from a car accident. A guitarist that died and one that got cancer. With every thing they went through they stayed together. In the case of the drummer and the guitarist that got cancer they waited for them to get better and rejoin the band. They did not replace. That does not happen much now. Great band.

When i saw them in concert way back in the day as a kid, we the audience would all shout…”LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL!”…then “IWANT ROCK N ROLL!”…the next day at school all the kids had a def leppard tee shirt.

The phrase spoken at the beginning, was actually (producer) Mutt Lange who came up with that," Allen said via a video posted to the band's official account. "He was getting so tired of saying '1,2,3,4' whenever we counted in. He wanted to inject a bit of humor in there." As for the specific language, Allen says that it was also Lange's creation. "I guess 'Gunter gleiben glauchen globen' is some Germanic-sounding language.

according to Def Leppard, it is German gibberish that Mutt Lange came up with in the studio.

This song was my intro to Def Leppard. I ran to my dad begging him to get me electric guitar lessons. He didn’t think I was serious 😅. It’s on my regular playlist to this day.

The 80's were great, I was about 13yrs. old when this came out in 1983, I'm so glad I grew up in the 80's. I had a friend I grew up with, and his parents were great, they would let us have a good time, we had a backyard full of people and his parents would play their music they liked, like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, which was great because it exposed us to great music, and they danced and partied with our music, so it was like there was no us and them old farts, because they were still teenagers or young at heart. Music can bridge all divides, whether its age or race, and I'm glad I learned that at a young age. The other great thing also was my friends Dad worked at the Arena, and he would get us a couple of free Tickets for all concerts we wanted to go to, so thanks to him I seen pretty much all of the bands from the 80's on their early tours, and some were opening acts, before they were headlining their own shows, for example Guns n Roses opening for Aerosmith, Motley Crue opening for Ozzy.

Y’all have done some great songs from Def Leppard. You have gotten through many of their hits. May I recommend some of their early music, as well as some of the songs less heard because they weren’t released as singles. Yet, Jay loves his harder rockin music! The farther back you go, the harder Def Leppard rocks! From High n Dry: Let it Rock, Mirror Mirror, Switch 625, Their debut album: Wasted! (Jay will absolutely love it!), and from Pyromania: Too Late for Love, Die Hard the Hunter, Comin Under Fire, Billy’s Got a Gun (Amber will love Joe’s singing on those last four). You gotta do it!

So glad you both say how that your now converted. Rock and Roll is not just a genre of music. It is a look. A feeling. Rock and Roll is an attitude. A state of mind. Rock and Roll is a way of life. We are glad to be here with ya, every single day. I may not comment every time, but you can bet, this old rock and roller is right here supporting you's two guys, each time you bring us a new pick. Watchin and lovin ya. Keep a Rockin, guys. Take it easy. Go with God. Peace and love, y'all. I will be seeing you on the next.
