Speaker: Josh Phillips Senior Malware Researcher
Online games, such as MMORPG's, are the most complex multi-user applications ever created. The security problems that plague these games are universal to all distributed software systems. Online virtual worlds are eventually going to replace the web as the dominant social space on the 'Net, as Facebook apps have shown, and this is big business. MMORPG game security is something that is very important to game studios and players, yet bots and exploits continue to infest all major MMORPG's, the creators and maintainers of the next generation of MMORPG's will need to understand software security from the ground up or face failure. The problem extends from software bugs such as item or money duplication, to mechanical exploitation such as botting, which leads to economic forces and digital identity theft. There is upwards of a billion dollars at stake, for both game hackers and game operators. Both Josh and Kuba have explored game hacking from both sides, and this talk presents a pragmatic view of both threats and defenses.

What a lot of people don't realize about games that have bots is that they GROW the economy by making gold/items/whatever more available, increasing the supply. Bots were definitely annoying in WoW when I used to play because they would make it harder to do daily quests, but really, it's not a big deal. the only time a bot really bothered me was when it was the same character camping the same spot for DAYS, making a daily really hard to do, every time I went there

That's the thing though - they don't need to be perfect at public speaking as long as they can get their point across. They aren't releasing a shiny new Apple product or talking about a new car line, they are talking about a minute concept for a specific platform. When you get into topics that are that niche the audience is basically expected to lower their expectations a bit because of how detailed and specific that topic is. It doesn't excuse the lower quality of their presentation, but given how niche the concepts that are being discussed are, it is much more understandable at least.

The part I wish this talk had was more info about the analytics systems the major MMO shops have in place, typically. I mean, back in the day, a game like SWG in 2003, we duped our asses off, and nobody knew about it. Duped items, currency, everything. Nowadays though, I think most major MMO's have some kind of analytics in place that say "ok, this guys account had a major currency spike", or "ok, this guy is in possession of x amount of this rare item, which is worth x value, this is abnormal". You can go on the EVE forums any day of the week and see a guy crying that he got his walled set to negative ISK because they think he received ISK from a known farmer. Obviously, these questions would be pretty difficult to answer unless you've worked on a major MMO recently, but from being banned from MMO's recently, it's reasonable to guess there are some kind of systems in place to automatically flag players for suspicious activity.

The comments on dupes were accurate. What may not come across because of the context is that ANYONE regardless of educational level and/or programming skill can find a dupe and potentially make a ton of money. You just need to find a quirk in the game itself, no knowledge of code is necessary.

Just letting you guys know they went with in game RMT because it so much easier to track things like - How you attained the cash How possible it is in game logic to attain said cash (such as intermediate logic checks like - did player a attack said npc for item, or attained materials to craft, also having a unique ID set by the server that doesn't call from the client is a good way to check) The bank/account/paypal being associated to cheating, etc. and Tons more, with more people speaking up about the hacks they used, it sets a new bar for hackers to succeed. I would like to add, by hacking (and I'm no anti-hactivist) you are actually allowing companies to attain the rights to snoop and or downright track all information sent by your clients, your programs, pretty much your entire network. These guys MAY say that game developers are "naive" they are wrong. A lot of game developers leave open code in the game, they do so to find and weed out the potential hackers. When a game is released, nobody can really have anything that can give them a leg up. With hackers, they find the immediate function that can be addressed and modify it. This is EASILY seen when using an authoritative server and can be used later legally. My point is, yeah you can make a lot of money hacking and exploiting. But it is extremely easy for the developers, who have experience in their OWN source code to see what is happening. Hackers only have a small portion or a basic picture of all the work behind the scenes but they do NOT have access to the authoritative servers or the back ups on databases unless they do some serious attacks on the server. This is also very easy to confirm and will net you actual jail time. All in all, Video game piracy, RMT hacks, client snoop/ packet adjustments, are all very easy to confirm. A lot of hackers make the misconception that if they don't get an immediate response from the server such as a ban notice or disconnect, then it is safe to proceed. Game developers will set traps along the way and set dummy code to entice the hacker to trigger the trap. This can be done by creating a dummy script with named variables, then a proxy script to deal with the variables before sending away to server. There are many more ways to detect than to hack. Keep that in mind if you are young and are serious about exploiting. I would agree with most to say that, with todays tools, its much easier to just make your own game create a legit and resourceful revenue stream through that. Video games started grossing well over hollywood revenues in mid 2008, we've come along way. Hackers have too. But unfortunately for them, with the way the worlds going, they will have no security of their own when trying to do their business and will suffer serious reactions. Again, I recommend you make your own games. Things like steam are available for people under the radar and can easily net you fame and legitimacy. Your customer base will also be of normal folk, and not shady players who could just as easily be hacking you for your money just as you are hacking the game for its money. Hackers are the one being "naive" in these situations.

@amthatwas

According to what Mercury said at the time (in the Glider forums), Blizzard actually came after him pretty hard. He said that when their lawyers showed up, he immediately offered to shut down Glider, but that wasn't good enough for them and they were pretty hell-bent on wringing some unreasonable amount of money out of him. I think he mentioned how much money they were trying to demand from him, but I don't recall what it was after all these years. In any case, it was an amount that he considered to be unacceptable, so he changed Glider's pricing model in order to raise funds for a big legal battle, and tried to fight them. I'm guessing that the reason they came after him so hard was to set an example. The guy was publicly selling his bot, as a legally registered business, and making millions of dollars. If they had let it continue, that would encourage other people to do the same. If Blizzard didn't make a very loud public stand against something like that, it would send a bad message to the player base. If he had just been selling his bot from the shadows, they probably wouldn't have been so inclined to come after him.

It's a pity they don't have a more accessible course. They could teach people how to hack their own game and no laws would be broken, and anyone that has ever thought "I'll make a bot" would be able to give them money the government and lawyers don't steal

game company sells you the game, then through a third party sell you the hacks to make it fun (pay to win with extra steps). then do ban waves so you will buy the game and the "new" hack again thats not bannable

(I posted this early in the video before he actually said he was talking about autoit): "I wanted to punch the dudes because it wasn't very... ...cool" -- I didn't see the presentation he was talking about, but he's probably talking about AutoIt, AutoHotkey, or something similar which is easy, practical (and essentially undetectable by servers because it doesn't access program memory) for any novice programmer to write a bot. Hell, an AutoIt bot for diablo 2 is what got me into programming. Before that, I always liked programming and had tried out a few stale boring lessons, but never really had a way to program in a fun way that could keep me interested. I recommend AutoIt for any gamer who wants to dabble in programming and start out.

the squeeze network trick is BS nowdays since they use player location on the server end which is why you rubber band back to where the server last saved your position regardless of where you are now - ex: Path of Exile
