Victoria and Héléne take us on a brief tour of their incredible Land Rover Defender pop-top camper conversion on their 110. RR Concepts and ExTec have done an excellent job of converting this 110 to one of the coolest campervans we've seen so far. All the fittings are by Extec from Germany and finished to a very high standard. Possibly the best overland vehicle?

Yeah,it better be for the price it cost.A costumer of ours had parts of this interieur for his 110 and it cost him 13K Euro.....not fitted.Just in pieces like a big buildingkit.

I'm a bit of a Defender fan, and boy this one has a lot of good stuff squeezed into it. It is beautifully kitted out. I'm off to watch Part 2 in a moment. My own camper is Toyota Troopy, and here in Australia we most prefer the warmer weather camping [Sept to April/May]. I must say that I really like the sound of that diesel heater to enjoy the snowy areas.

I really like the system to close the cabinet. 110 is very made for camper conversion. I would like my 90 become a 110 :p

Marco_au_boulot we had our previous 90 setup very nicely with a custom sliding drawer. Worked like a treat. You're right though, 110 are perfect.

Awesome vehicle, i've always felt the biggest design flaw in the defender is the rear door not being closer to the full width of the rear, say for, slide out drawers. Apart from that i love it.

Hi I have a similar conversion on my Defender, done by Alucab in Cape Town. We have used it in South America for the past year. But it was cold, and we urgently need a heater. What make and model did you use? And how does one istall it? Is it a DIY job? Thanks

Hi, the heater is an Eberspacher, but I don't know the model number (it is not our truck), but we did a test drive/camp which might seem familiar to you vehicle-wise: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d82obNyl05PXg5c.html It may be an idea to approach the builders of the vehicle (in France): www.rrconcept.com/V2/toit-relevable-defender.html, using the kit from ExTec (in Germany - who designed the conversion): www.ex-tec.de/ It does seem like a challenging install - unless you're rather brave or a seasoned DIYer (which most overlanders are, by necessity in my opinion)... I follow 4xOverland and the Alucab conversion looks to be of similar quality and usability (not much out there in camperland that wasn't dreamed up first by a Saffa or Aussie?) Icarus looks rather cool... Let us know if you have a blog on your South American adventures, love to read/watch it. And - if I am correct - I should be able to sign off with: 'hoe lyk 't daar...',

This is so cool. But ive always thought that roof top tents or even this system are not really the safest place to sleep in because its fairly easy to break in. What do you think about that? In thinking about doing this to my defender but that stops me a bit.

I would agree they are not as safe as a closed RV - in major towns and cities, which is where you normally have a bigger chance of running into trouble with theft 😕 . However it could be argued that the idea here is to find the most remote places, off the beaten track 🤔

Amazing conversion. Out of interest, where would you store your clothes and extra food? It looks like every inch is already being used

Between the front seats is the large 'box' with seperate section above. Also the bottom cupboards of the kitchen area and underneath the seating can be utilised as well as the cupboard they use for their caméras/laptops, but you could naturally have a couple of soft bags for clothing. Pretty generous if you're creative... Nicely finished, and a good alternative to a fullblown van. Cheers for the comment 👍😎

I don't think there's anything particularly special about it honestly, but it uses the better (that's obviously subjective) system of mounting the bed on air struts as well to get it out of the way like some other companies also do. That's the easiest part of a pop top build though and you could even do that yourself to a build like the one in this video. Making a larger sleeping platform and adding two struts to it shouldn't be that hard. The important part is the build quality of the outer part of the pop top itself. You want it water proof, you want it safe, you want it light, you probably want to be able to put solar etc. on top of it etc. That's the important part to look out for, and I'm sure you can get any pop top company to make the exact type of bed that you want as that's easy compared to what else goes into a pop top.

Same old design faults, can't swing a cat in it, as she says lacks leg room and space in the rear. Table too small, have to cook outside on the tailgate, (hopefully not in the rain but probably wearing your coat!) shower outside, weather permitting and despite spending all the money - you're still shitting in the hedge!
