Do you like robots? What about Magic: the Gathering? If so, then this video is for you! How do we go about defining what a "robot" is in this game?
#mtg #magicthegathering
I'd love to link my socials here in the description but KZfaq won't let me sorry! You can find me most places as @iwriterobots or at iwriterobots.com!
In 2023 I joined a discord server full of a bunch of other magic nerds on the internet. The premise of the server was that none of us were able to attend MagicCon that year, so we’d all hang out online and kind of run our own. Folks were invited to create and present their own panels, so I did. A year later, at MagicCon Chicago, I had some folks ask about the presentation, but I didn’t have a good way to show it off. So I’ve reworked and improved a few things and converted the panel to video format. This is that presentation. Enjoy!
Special thanks to the folks who saw me perform version one of this presentation live. You guys are the best.

WHOOPS! I only realized post-production that it should be "Card Type" not "Supertype"! Oh well. :)

Akshually 🤓 supertype is correct because it includes things like legendary which would be the perfect place for a robot supertype
@axelostlund2348
@axelostlund2348 Ай бұрын
@@Amphibian42*Pushes glasses through skull* Aahckshuelly, supertypes are niche descriptive types that has direct rules tied to them, which defines the card's use in the game. (Legendary allows only 1 of each permanent in play, Basic allows any number of copies to be played, World is like Legendary, and snow defines snow.) There is currently no rules presented for why a robot supertypes would be needed. Robots can be defined through the game system by type (artifact) and subtypes, just fine.
@Amphibian42
@Amphibian42 Ай бұрын
@@axelostlund2348 i know but due to the variety of creatures that cam be considered robots with no actual limk between them, a supertype similar to snow would be good if they were to ever tie them together
@axelostlund2348
@axelostlund2348 Ай бұрын
@@Amphibian42 While that could be a possibility, Supertypes aren't just given out to define cohesion or art, there needs to be a distinct mechanical reason. And currently I am not certain what that would be. One possibility: if a "robot"(artificial?) Would produce mana, you can choose for it to produce colourless mana. As a sort of way of saying: this creature is living and has a connection to leylines but in a different way than traditional living beings. Main point: Supertypes aren't introduced without mechanical significance. In fact there aren't more than 4 in a traditional game of magic (Basic, Legendary, Snow, World.)

I believe the artifact phyrexian creatures can be called synthezoids, "living" creatures made from inorganic materials, much like vision from the MCU. Very close to robots in a sense, but not created to work.

The sheer number of one-liners and references to both Magic as a game and its lore, as well as other robotic media, is just staggering. Bravo! Also, given their in-story origin as man-made constructs rather than forces of nature, I would in fact classify golems as robots, as they otherwise would have to fit alongside elementals and wierds, and that just feels weird to me.

Fun watch! I also have a bit of hesitation about how the Robot subtype came about, but I think a great way they stay distinct is they are based generally on our own universe's physical realities of how an automaton functions; engineering, electronics, computers, nuclear energy. These are not wholly conducive with Magic's native multiverse, so I think Robot as a subtype will stay comfortably on the outskirts.

Im really enjoying this video, your voice is very relaxing to listen to! And I’m a bit of a robot fan myself, so the subject matter is appreciated! I’m not 100% finished the video, so perhaps it will be addressed later, but I do have one small nitpick. Breya isn’t a true Robot. Breya is a human native to the Esper Shard of Alara whose body is augmented with metal. Closer to a cyborg than a robot I believe. Esper is weird like that.

Dr Who lore: The clockwork droids don't skin people to blend in so much as blend in to skin people. They were essentially repair crew on a ship in the far future called the SS Madame de Pompadour that became damaged in some way. They were programmed to keep the ship functioning at all costs, so when they ran out of mechanical parts they started harvesting the human crew for biological parts (nerves as circuitry, eyeballs as camera lenses, all lovely stuff). Also, for some reason they decided to use the ship's warp engines to rip a hole through time into the bedroom of the real life Madame de Pompadour because they got it in their heads that only her brain would be perfect for repairing the ship's central computer, hence them dressing up to infiltrate a french masquerade ball. Idk what magic creature type would really convey "repairman;" honestly, robot might just be the most evocative creature type in that specific scenario.
@casteanpreswyn7528
@casteanpreswyn7528 Ай бұрын
The Assembly-Worker type is exactly what those repair bots are/would be for Universes Within.
@LuciferLuckless
@LuciferLuckless Ай бұрын
@@casteanpreswyn7528 An assembly worker is someone who works on an assembly line or otherwise in a factory, assembling at least part of a full product. To me, that doesn't really fit with maintenance work. Something like Engineer would fit better, but I don't think Magic has that as a creature type, favouring Artificer instead.
@casteanpreswyn7528
@casteanpreswyn7528 Ай бұрын
@LuciferLuckless while I would normally agree with that definition for an Assembly-Worker worker, the flavor text for the card "Assembly Worker" almost perfectly describes the repair bots. "With their factories long destroyed, some of Mishra’s creations still toil in remote areas, endlessly performing and reperforming their last orders." Replace "factory" with "ship" and they are no different. It is also the closes to an in universe type that they could get outside of "construct".
@LuciferLuckless
@LuciferLuckless Ай бұрын
@@casteanpreswyn7528 But from that flavour text it seems to suggest that the Assembly Workers aren't trying to maintain their old, decaying factories but are instead still drilling or sawing or welding or whatever random bits of metal they find to keep making the machine parts they were designed to manufacture. It sounds similar, but I personally view it as quite different. They were still performing the job of "Assembly-Worker" in the past, and still sort of are, whereas the Clockwork Droids never did. Let me give you a clearer example. Let's say there was some magic card with art that depicted an automaton with cleavers at the end of mechanical arms and it was pouring a pot of hot oil over some poor victim. The card's flavour text is something like: "With the Great Chef Zambini's restaurant's all closed down, some of his former kitchen staff still toil in remote areas, endlessly performing and reperforming their last orders." Would you say such a creature should have the creature type "Assembly-Worker"? After all, if you just substitute a few words in the flavour text for entirely different words, it sounds a lot like the flavour text for Assembly Worker, and that is an Assembly-Worker. But I think most people would agree that a chef-bot doesn't really feel like an Assembly Worker. Saying "well if you just change them working on a ship to them working in a factory, they're just like this other Assembly Worker" doesn't really mean much. If you swap the "ship" in the art of Admiral Beckett Brass for a "factory", then she'd be doing her job in a factory. That sounds mighty like an assembly worker to me.
@casteanpreswyn7528
@casteanpreswyn7528 Ай бұрын
@@LuciferLuckless yes, because the important bit about Assembly Workers in mtg isn't that they work on an assembly line, it's that they follow their orders/programming even after it is pointless to do so, it's all they can do because it's all they know how to do, just like the repair droids. Yes, those kitchen staff would be Assembly-Worker type if they were unable to really do anything else, otherwise they're just weirdos. Lol

Interesting video and well made! I do think there are some weird lines drawn, Breya and the other artifact creatures from Esper definitely fall in the cyborg camp as they are born wholly of meat and enhance themselves with etherium. And despite the cultural innaccuracy, strictly looking through a magic lens golems are likely one of the "robot" creature types. Unless you want to draw a line between what is "living" or not. I would argue that Karn is alive and has a "soul" but I could see the case that Bronze Walrus is a simulacra of life - then I could see golem not being a robot creature type

So to me, Golems are non-living materials kept alive with magic. Robots are kept alive through non-magical means. Robots can be jumpstarted with magic or even their energy source is magical in nature, but it's the moving parts that need to be moved by non-magical things. This allows for robots to be made of wood if built correctly or for golems to be made of metal.

I absolutely love robots and robot-like things in card games. My favourite Magic set is Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and I find most card art with knights in especially heavy and/or ornate armor very appealing because they look like mechs. i recently got into Cardfight Vanguard where like 80% of creatures are robotic regardless of what it says in their name or creature type. And I've always loved Digimon, where it's basically the same thing with high-level creatures. I think that part of the beauty of Magic is the fact that it can be literally anything, and have literally anything in it, and still feel like Magic so, the way I see it, robots and mechs and knights in huge robo-like armor are more than welcome.

This was a really awesome video! I am glad that their are others out their who want to give robots the love they deserve! Something that I wanted to add to this conversation to increase its complexity is the idea of cultural relativism, the idea that how we view the world differs depending on where you are from. So much of how we understand the world is based on how we view the world, as you mentioned in regards to the mechanical lizard in Kaledesh "life goes so far beyond the organic." To those on Kaledesh the artherborn and that lizard aren't robots because that is just life as they understand it. However, with the example of the phyrexians the compleation that they go through involves replacing many of the organic parts with mechanical substitutes. So while Atraxa to us might not look very mechanical or robot like, I am certain Elsh Norn would consider her to be one of her machines. I think a similar argument could be made with cards like solum simulacrum, a neon dynasty solum simulacrum would have a very different cultural understanding then a solum simulacrum in dominaria.

Barbed Servitor comes to mind for an artifact construct that brings to mind a mechanical function of a humanoid form, irregardless or maybe even in spite of its depiction looking more demonic than mechanical (as is reasonable for a creation for the cult of Rakdos), dyou know any more mtg cards robots that can be understood as robots irregardless or even in spite of their art?

@iwriterobots
@iwriterobots Ай бұрын
I would call Cyborgs their own classification, like I touch on briefly when I talk about Phyrexians. I'd say the reason we have the word Cyborg at all is because they *aren't* robots, but rather something organic AND mechanical, hence needing a new word and classification entirely. Taxonomy is hard, hahaha. Now in magic terms: I imagine if we ever got "cyborg" typed creatures, they'd classify as robots depending on if they get an artifact card type or not. That would be the big qualifier for me, is if they are "machine" enough to be considered artifact creatures. I could see it making the robot subtype shortlist for sure :)

I think you might need to do some more research on the lore of some of these cards. Breya and Silas are not robots at all, they are born humans that then changed themselves with mechanical and magical parts (at most cyborgs) Karn is a robot because he is an utterly artificial being created by a human. He is called a golem because the word has expanded beyond its original meaning.

I think youre really misguided here, but this deffinitely is an interesting topic. Heres my two cents on the topic... First and foremost, I need to get out of the way that high fantasy golems are (generally speaking) not the same as jewish golems. Comparing them is like comparing fantasy pirates to actual pirates. High fantasy golems are (generally speaking) literally just robots but with a different flavor. They are constructs created through varying means depending on the setting or story, which are animated through magic to preform work or tasks. Many are protrayed as more explicitly like robots or even as machines themselves, but theyve also been protrayed as actually just being made of stone or some other element. Golems in magic follow the general idea. Now that being said, MTG has a pretty defined difference between what a "construct" is and what a "golem" is for the most part. Generally speaking "constructs" are machines or something mechanical in nature, where as golems are not. Karn for example is not a machine, he is a stone man animated by urza through magic. Even then though, "golem" and "construct" arent the only terms used for robots. "Construct" itself can even just refer to a machine or something mechanical which isnt a robot in the first place. Myr and Gnomes are both destinct creature types refering to types of robots. Some robots arent even categorized are just "artifact creatures" and youre supposed to sorta just get the point. (Edit: some grammar)

I really dont think mechs count. Mechs arent robots, theyre like suits of armor or tanks. Theyre not artificial life.

Glad you touched on the non-artifact robots. Especially before we got colored artifacts as evergreen/deciduous a lot of robots that aren't artifacts at all, like Slag Fiend and many of the other creatures from Mirrodin/New Phyrexia/Phyrexia.

I wonder if "Plane of origin" could also be part of the checklist when paired with creature type. like, there are some planes where it's a lot more likely a Golem is a robot than a clay/earth construct.

@@alexortiz9777 That's an intriguing idea for sure! I'm not sure if I like how much prior information that requires. Additionally, a lot of the "robot" golems that are metal are sadly more akin to like, animated steal than a robot? It's kind of a fine line, which is why I defer to artistic representation over like "lore" accuracy. E.g. Sometimes Solem Simulacrum is a robot
