Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down House Of The Dragon.

The first episode of Season 2 has just come out and it ends in a big bad way. Featuring the entrance of Blood and Cheese they've come to collect a son for a son. The ending is pretty messed up but its actually even worse in the books.
Throughout this video I'm gonna discuss it and talk about what exactly happens in the work. Obviously there's gonna be heavy spoilers here so if you don't want it ruined then I recommend you turn off. Ok so the episode culminates with Daemon arriving at Kings Landing by boat. After entering the strong hold he catches the attention of blood who he gives coins to to pass through the gates.
This is something touched upon in the work with it saying:
Let it not be forgotten: in his youth, Daemon Targaryen had been the “Prince of the City,” his face and laugh familiar to every cutpurse,
whore, and gambler in Flea Bottom. The prince still had friends in the low places of King’s Landing, and followers amongst the gold cloaks.

Kind of a bummer they cut Maelor from the show, it’s more gutwrenching that she picks him because Jaeharys is the heir and then Cheese fucks with Maelor about mommy wanting him dead before Blood lops off Jaehaerys’ head. The idea that the surviving child knows their parent chose them to die over their sibling would really mess with their head. It was much darker and intense in the book.

Why is everyone saying it’s worse in the books Dx how is slowly decapn a child while he’s awake/aware and being suffocated not worse than a quick lob of the head I get that the addition of Maelor and the mental torture was maybe a little worse (but cmon the kid probably didn’t understand a thing)

The book is also written from the perspective of unreliable narrators so we can't 100% assume that every such detail is the truth.

Idk i had subtitles on and something about the captions when it was happening just made it so much more messed up for me idk. I wish they would have done it differently but i don’t hate how it was done. Still made me feel uncomfortable which was the whole point right?

But I’m always just in awe of how intensely f’ed up of a picture George can paint… like if anyone were to make a show that portrayed word for word what George writes you could probably only watch it on the dark web or something

@@stephched4270 yeah in the books everything is not an accident😂 people were actually cruel, greedy for power and how that greed corrupted them and made them do evil things which destroyed lives and weakened house targaryen beyond repair. The dance of the dragon is not remembered fondly by the people of westeros.this is the time where the house targaryen was at the height of its power after jaehaerys and viserys nearly 80 years reign. Both these factions destroyed everything that their predecessors worked so hard for.

@@mattcollins3591 Not all the events are disputed - some are more truthful than others...Eustace and Mushroom's accounts may differ, but the events at their core did indeed happen. You'd know this if you actually read it.

In the books blood and cheese insisted "a son for a son" when Helena begged them to kill her instead. She was given a choice, kill the eldest hair apparent or the new baby boy. She chose the baby to die probably because she thought he is still unaware of what's happening and it will be less traumatic for him. But blood and cheese killed the eldest because they thought he was her favourite son if she chose the baby to die. Gradually sje couldn't bare looking at the baby not hold him out of guilt she chose him to die. Eventually she due to increased depression she jumped to her death in a ditch, impaled by spikes. The blood and cheese assassination was a big mistake. It severely weakened the black faction. When Aemond killed luke it opened a path to the blacks to rally more lords to Thier side because look was only a messenger and killing a messenger is considered taboo. But when when the assassination committed by blood of an unarmed child in his bed is 10 times worse shrinking the possibility of more lords joining the blacks.

Good point. The thing I wonder is how did anyone find out about what happened to Luke? Aemond was the only witness so I assume he told what happened but I wonder why he would do that? It was basically an accident after all, vahgar didn’t obey. Did Aemond just want to get credit for the death? Wouldn’t he know how it would be negatively viewed and how his mother and grandfather would be upset? He should have just kept his mouth shut.

@@janesfilms Ah it's different in the book. In the book in the Barathehon right after Luke leaves the sister who wasn't chosen by Aemond mocks him for letting Luke go... She probably was envious Aemond chose her sister over her so she taunts Aemond. "Did he cut your balls too? Thank goodness you choose my sister over me, I prefer a man who is intact"... This caused Aemond out of ego or perhaps low self esteem to pursue Luke, the attack was impulsive and intentional. Aegon had a feast for Aemond once he got back to Kings Landing... Could be to celebrate he betrothal or him killing Luke. The problem is it was perceived by the blacks as if Luke's death is celebrated. Otto got angry at Aemond and said to him did you loose your other eye as well... Because otto realised this could lead to war when it was attempted to resolve the matter diplomatically. The Greens didn't have enough lords at thier side yet and as I stated killing a messenger is considered taboo and could make it difficult for them to rally more lords to thier side.

And without that sound? The scene has nothing else. The book doesn't even do all that, it's a clean quick chop. The show wanted to drag out the killing when they should have dragged out the bargaining and negotiations and have kill be quick and off screen.

heonstly, not having maelor makes the greens and Daeron look better. having maelor be torn apart would not be pleasant, and it make Daeron look bad for slaughtering the entire town and lady because of it.

Idk why they changed the necessary elements from the book! Helaena choosin the wrong son and them killing the other one was the peak horror of that part. I didn't expect HBO to show the whole scene cause it's really messed up, but changing the order of the events also wasn't a good move.

The actress who is playing Helena. Didnt sell the end scene for me . I know the character supposed to be odd. But I didn't feel her fear. On the positive side, i really liked that they were there for Amend but the plan changed

For me, the show was more horrifying than the books. Hearing them sawing the child's head off instead of doing a quick, painless, one swing death really fucked me up. Reminded me of that scene in Hereditary where we hear the mom cutting her own head off before we actually see it. So disturbing.

I really appreciated the show version. They’re definitely leaning into haelana being a seer. She chose her son because she knows her daughter will be key to ending the Dance. Also: remember that F&B was written as an imperfect history by authors with agendas. The fact that they take snippets from the book, while largely honoring the spirit of the book, really helps expand the story and I think they’ve made some great creative choices.

Ooooohhhhh, interesting that she may have foreseen something that indicated keeping her daughter alive was more important in the long-term. It never much seemed to me that she understood her visions last season, but I saw a clip that reminded me there was a younger actress playing the character at that point, so it was a very different performance.

I haven’t read the book, although I heard some snippets. I really expected the scene to have more tension. I didn’t expect them to just walk around in front of everyone. Rather I thought the scene would be quieter, darker, and full of tension. I felt so happy seeing the north. When that music came on I 🥺

I think the show's adaptation was a decent alteration since while the book's was far darker, it also perhaps leans too much into the trope of trauma porn and instead depicting the sounds of the child's death and subsequent decapitation as well as the despair and loss in the eyes of Helaena as she made her choice was just gut-wrenching to behold. Why would anyone want to witness a child's head being taken? The trauma alone in the show from this act will reverberate for the rest of the season. Also to cut Maelor out might have been a smart move since in the books he's later torn apart by a mob, which is a much worse way to go. All in all I think the show did a pretty good job in emulating the source material with some decent alterations here and there.

Maelor wasn’t even in any of season 1, having a random baby in the scene without any context as to who it is wouldve not landed (except for book readers of course) the scene was fine

Also the fact that she left without screaming after hearing her son being killed and beheaded and just went to her mother and said "they kill the boy" like they killed someomes else son . I don't know it felt very off to me . I don't know any mother that loves her children that will react like this in such a situation.

Still hoping they have something up their sleeve, a reason for this that will make sense down the line, but if there isn’t one, yes, I’m disappointed by the change. The grief haunting Helaena after choosing to kill Maelor, and her suicide possibly being because the sight of her own son haunted her, is so good-not to mention the pretty significant role Maelor goes on to play. I REALLY hope they don’t cut Maelor entirely. Is it possible they’ve shifted the timeline and Helaena is pregnant right now? Is there enough time for her to have a child around the time she dies?

ehh I disagree. Maelor doesn't really contribue anything else, besides dying and the sackign of tumbleton, which doesn't really do anything for the story besides showing the desperation of the commonfolk, which we would already be seeing in king's landing, it is rather redudant. It also makes Daeron, who is supposed to be the more noble and good Green also look like a jackass for killing everyone in tumbleton

Whoever decided to have Helaena walk in on Alicent riding Christon immediately after this scene deserves to be banned from ever working on film or television ever again. It immediately takes you out of the moment and is absolutely unnecessary.

that was my other major issue with that scene. Do we really think Daemon is dumb enough to send the Wet Bandits to assassinate Aemond Targaryen? Nothing about that makes sense.

Jaehaerys had a custom habit of playing in the library. Helaena couldn’t control her son. She didn’t love her son. So what the heck, she just pointed at her son anyway. Now her daughter will become “the Queen Who Never Was”. It’s a repeat cycle.

i think they are going to make Helaena a more prominent character. Maybe the greens actually start listening to her, I also heard the tapestry she was making is a death veil for whichever child would die since she saw it in a dream. She really is a fascinating character. I hope they develop her more on screen than in the books. Her character to me was let down.

I have the book but haven’t read it yet. (Plan to after the shows end) but as a non book reader, this scene was fire. Of course HBO isn’t going to “show show” it so that should have been expected. I think Helena Acted as she was written for the show.

Why make it clear that Aemond was the target? The only reason to explicitly make Aemond the target is to absolve Rhaenyra of any wrongdoing. Are we supposed to believe that Daemon would send one soldier to kill Aemond?

The show runners are stans for the Blacks. They’ve been sanitizing the worst aspects of Rhaenyra (remember her black, gay husband from season one who they staged a murder of an innocent person to allow him to live free and allow the show to avoid the “bury your gays trope”); while amplifying the worst aspects of Aegon and Alicent. The Dance in the books was about the lesser of two evils. The Dance in the show is about “yes, slay queen”. When we get to Rhaenyra’s time as queen with the high taxes, disastrous campaigns, riots in the streets and slaying of the dragons in the pit by the smallfolk. I can already see the showrunners framing everything as not her fault. So far, Rhaenyra is lacking agency in her own story. It’s a bad look narratively.

When the uprising of King's Landing happen and the dragon pit is stormed and all the dragons die. The showrunners will again paint Rhaenyra as not responsible or powerless to effect the plot. They are removing her agency as a character to preserve her image.

As far as a scene goes, it was fine. I had no real emotional connection to Helena or the kid, so I had to draw upon the act itself as being terrible as opposed to me STILL having nightmares over the burnt screams of shireen. Yeesh

I think the changes the show made will still have the same impact to Helaena and the story. Helaena looked absolutely traumatized after the incident. She didnt even register what her mom was doing, she was so much in shock. Hell, even having to hear the sound of it made me nauseated myself. I think Helaena knowing she chose one of her children to die is more important than B & C playing mind games with a child. The guilt of that choice will still probably drive her into madness with grief. And the surviving sister still may also be traumatized knowing her mother made that choice too. Its equally horrific imo.

I hate how they did it in the show! Blood and Cheese could have been a key moments of Season 2 and one that people will remember like the Red Wedding. It's disappointing. And Helaena's reaction to the death of her child was also super weird! I hate how she just calmly said "they killed the boy".

The book version was miles darker and kinda disappointed me that we didn’t see that, but tbh they took the correct approach. That would have been way too much shock value especially when we know team black is the eventual “winner”

Man, I can’t believe they wussed out on this deliciously Shakespearian twist to Blood and Cheese. The it is not the Red Wedding but it really helped justify the escalating brutality of the the Dance. By the end of it all you have this feeling everyone is just is waiting to see who will cut off more of their own arm.

They have obviously chosen to switch the emotional trauma and guilt of Helena’s Sophie‘s choice onto Alicent, by changing the storyline from her choosing between her two sons to alicent sleeping with Cole while he should’ve been protecting the princes.

It's a shame they didn't keep it more similar to the book, but the scene still worked. It was brutal, heartbreaking and it didn't really change anything important. Real happy with this first episode, which is awkward to say considering it ended with a child's gruesome death..

Blood definitely doesn’t just let the servant go… when he looks up and notices that she’s left, he immediately grabs his knife and gets up with purpose! Had he not run into Cheese with the Queen, he would’ve kept looking for that servant who saw his face. 100%. So next week either Cole will find them and kill them (both?) before escaping the Keep, or the servant will provide a description of Blood that spurs a manhunt in the city

People are giving Phia Saban a lot of backlash and saying her performance during this scene was underwhelming. I don’t mean to sound mean, but I have grown up around a lot of close people with autism, and it’s no secret that the show has chosen to portray Helaena as someone that’s *probably* on the spectrum. I think her reaction is a very real life reaction of how someone like this would react. You’re in so much shock and your thoughts are going a million miles a minute, you don’t even know how to react. I thought she was perfect

I'll say this. I've read the book and for me the show was more impactful but the books account is more vile. I just didn't feel anything reading about what happened in the book. I definitely felt what happened in the show. There is knots on my stomach just remembering it the sound of them sawing his head off. Overall the episode did it's job. Though I'm Team Black, makes you realise in this show, there are no heroes and villains and the reason Dance of the Dragon is my favourite event in Westeros is that it is a tragedy through and through. A LOT of horrific things are going to happen, this is just the start.
