Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down House Of The Dragon.

Season 2 is now officially here and this video we're gonna go through it all. I've gone back through the book and re-read the histories to as in-depth of a breakdown on the episode as I can. This contains easter eggs, hidden details and changes from the work as well as where we think things are gonna go. As always we'll be saving the spoilers until the end of the video so I'll give you a heads up before that that Spoilers are coming incase you knerr nothing.

Now before we even start the episode we have a brand new title sequence to discuss. This is a chronicle of the targaryen lineage and we start off with the tale of old Valyria.
The capital of the Valyrian freehold this southern was a home of the dragons. Because of their superiority in warfare, Valyria had conquered much of a lot of Essos. Its empire had taken down all its opposing nations and it rule over half of the planet.
Feels weird saying planet in a Game Of Thrones video but moving on.

She has always been hinted and portrait as someone who wanted the life Rhaenyra had; perhaps at the beginning she did not mean to cause her friend harm, but as an adult she no longer cares for her in that way. At least not enough to prevent a war.

Absolutely, it left me feeling extremely disappointed at the end of the episode. I thought they would do the scene better than I was imagining and they somehow made it way worse. Coulda been a crazy moment but it made me feel nothing.

@@emosam07 Because they are intended to be rat catchers. At this time they would have used the dog drive the rats into the traps. Had they not had the dog, it would have aroused the guards curiosity and suspicion....given that they were already on a floor they weren't supposed to be on....they'd have been fucked. As it turned out, the guards were all drinking with the King. Apparently, the motto "Be Prepared"....isn't exclusively popular with boy scouts and Lion King usurpers.

I find the split on blood and cheese super interesting. As an autistic adult I found Heleana’s response to be very realistic, the obvious dissociation and acting in silence as opposed to anything more ‘appropriate’ was strangely chilling 🤷🏻‍♀️

The blood and cheese moment was way to tame, Helena reaction was odd and it didn’t really pull at any heart strings. Telling her mother “they killed the boy” made it even more disconnected

I think it played out that way because of Halaena having prophetic visions. She saw this ahead of time and told them the correct bed thinking it would save the boy, but as is all too often that case she misinterpreted what would happen. That's why she seemed so shocked. As she walked around looking for help she was almost smother her daughter against her shoulder as well. The "They killed the boy" felt like shock at which child was killed and her trying to understand how she messed up.

@briengakaplan-b1550 A theme of the books is that dreams and prophecy are notoriously always misinterpreted. They are leaning into that with her, she knows something bad will happen, but not what and not necessarily to whom. I do think she thought telling them Jahaery's correct bed would save him though, she seemed genuinely shocked that they went for him after she told them that bed.

At this point, I think Alicent was mad at Rhaenyra because she got with Ser Cole before she had a chance to make her move... Season II, E1 was based days later, which makes me believe, she and Ser Cole BEEN sleeping together, with every single time being the last time, until the, "Next Time"... That been going on, soon after she saved him, the show just decided to physically show their encounters now... She is definitely a jealous, hypocrite, mad Rhaenyra had options (did want she wanted), while she wore a mask (portraying herself as judgemental & perfect), having to sneak around to squeeze in her wants, in between being "Pimped Out" by Otto...

I don’t feel bad for the greens. They are such hypocrites, each and every one of them. But alicent really gets me, she wants anything that rhaenyra has. What was even worse was her lighting a candle for Luke… (like girl wtf). I feel so bad for Helena, she is the only green that did not deserve this atrocity.. But damn the greens do not make their case any better. Although selfish, and brats the blacks are open about their hypocrisy, and they know they’re in the wrong a lot of the times. But the greens are not, hide underneath their lies. Just so they could snake their way up to the throne.

It's very common for GoT and now HotD to use the soundtracks of familiar places and people when they're spoken of. You can also hear their respective musical themes when Winterfell comes into view and when the Velaryons are first introduced in the episode.

Either way, the B&C scene will get some serious talk. You go full dark and show everything, that will cause controversy. You go a bit tame, book fans will be disappointed. They chose a route, and I respect that. I think the buildup and sound of the kill was already disturbing enough (even tho the scene was more darker in the book). We, the audience, should get the gist of it already regardless if you read the book or not. Overall, a solid first ep to start the 2nd season imo.

I've read that they also wanted to protect the child actors from hearing or going through all of that, as well, which makes sense! Apparently the hand that covers the kid's mouth is even the actor's own father, to minimize his trauma. That's so thoughtful.

I disagree. They could change a few thing in that scene but now it's a mockery and shoved into one episode. Helaena tried to give B&C her life instead to save her children but they changed it to her necklace? I think the show compared to the books definitely leaves it open to interpretation.

Really good episode overall, but the Blood & Cheese scene was pretty underwhelming in my opinion. It was way darker in the book, and I know a lot of book fans were excited to see how it was going to play out on screen. I think the way the show portrayed it is going to cause a lot of discussion.

I mean, thats a form of parenting, and analysis, but generally we note that consistently provocative characters doing provocative things means that their actions are themselves provocations. I don't think Helena's visions are that difficult to decipher. Beware of the beast beneath the boards was definitely about the coronation and the queen that never was bursting through the floor on her dragon. Helena saying she's scared of rats is obviously a reference to the rat catcher "Cheese" so I definitely believe she had a vision of sorts about the death of her son

I don't agree with those who say it was too tame on the v*olence (youtube rules) - just hearing the sounds of a child getting sloppily b*headed just out of view is more than enough and arguably more horrifying. What I lacked was the emotional element that Helaena's choice would have added, or the sheer horror of not knowing if they would all be killed.

They seriously toned down the most messed up moment in the books. The kids were awake and had to witness their mother make the choice, they were not asleep like in the show. She chose the youngest to be killed since "he was too young to understand what was going on." Blood and cheese being twisted, killed the oldest instead. Not before taunting the younger one about how his mother wanted him dead. Most of the horror comes from them being awake and seeing their mother choose which of them should be killed. The showrunners seriously thought halaena walking in on her mother and criston getting nasty with each other was more interesting than staying faithful to the books. Noice. I was looking forward to this scene cuz of how dark and twisted it was but of course hbo being so woke or something, played it safe. =/

Right....yes there wasn't a second son but you got twins who looked so much alike that these men couldn't tell them apart. They even pointed it out and couldn't add more suspense that they'll off both cause they couldn't tell so she better choose. She offered a necklace and that was it? Refuse a bit more, please so it feels more like you didn't have a choice....maybe it's the dreamer thing so she grieved him long ago...

The scene itself was yes, still chilling.... but it needed more pain...and that ending scene just ruined the moment 10 fold

@@SouthernPrincipe Tbh I think the showrunners feared of backlash or out cry over how dark the original scene was in the books. The scene in the show was kind of chilling because you can hear them sawing the kid's head off but everything still felt muted and should have been the red wedding scene of the season. I guess I'm just lil ticked off cuz it wasn't how I imagined so that's why I'm being harsh. The premier was cool, but I'm going to wait until all of the episodes are out.

Their depiction of Blood and Cheese was ok but they were never after Aemond, specifically. It kinda makes the brutality they used more of an act of necessity, which makes Blood and Cheese a lil less frightening.
