I actually saw an image in a video with a bunch of submechanophobia video. Surrounded in darkness, barely lit, damp and motionless. It was the sea monster. I instantly recognized it.

This is very much what it's like to work in professional theater. We pour our hearts into a set, and then rip it down when the shows end, some goes into the trash, other stuff gets recycled into the next, repainted

If they sold those subs for $10k a piece they would have been bought and appreciated and the park could have made easy money.

Kamon Skye We were in the mermaid lagoon. It was underground which made the experience even scarier because we feared the ceiling would collapse. I even remember specifically being in “Ariel’s playground” playing with my brother on a fake sunken pirate ship (I think I was like 11). The ground started to sway and I thought it was a fun effect they added, didn’t even realize what was happening until I got down and saw people running and screaming.

I would argue that kids don't know what they want until they see it. I was enamored with the 2000 leagues under the sea ride as a kid and I had no idea who Jules Verne was, just that you were in a submarine and you were attacked by a giant octopus. Sounds dope to me.

I'm still holding out for a Mary Shelley themed park. Only shallow pedantics worship Verne over the true goddess of sci-fi.

You could have the ride be the voyage too and back from treasure planet. From the start with leaving the space port, to the black hole, to arriving at the planet, and then the ride ends with having to flee as the planet explodes before returning to the space port

Yeah but it's a tricky title innit? "30 Miles Above the Land" sounds like a rocket being shot into the sky but could also be about someone running for 30 miles. Of course you can't go 20,000 leagues straight down into the sea but I would legit argue that most people didn't and still don't confidently know how long that distance actually is nor concern themselves enough to learn it. We mostly just assumed that a submarine goes 20,000 leagues down into the depths, I know that's what I did.

20,000 is also quite a specific number for a voyage of distance - it does sound a lot more like a depth measurement. I imagine it would be quite tricky to go exactly 20,000 and be like "well, thats the end of the voyage then, that was good timing".

NicoNicoleinTokyo I went to Tokyo in 2015 and visited Disneyland (didn't have time to visit Sea). But I'm hoping to move to Japan and I'll visit Sea sometime. Tokyo Disneyland was great, but super busy because it was August, lots of long queues.

Here's a sobering thought... Sometime in the future...even Star Wars Land will be remodeled or even...torn completely down. It will be interesting to see if Defunctland is still around and what platform it will be on, as well. ;) Who can guess what things will be like in, say, 50 years? Any guesses on when Star Wars Land will finally come down? I give it...oh...30-35 years which will include it being repurposed for other themes. I think that might be generous. :/ Figure that we might have maybe 15 years tops for more Star Wars movies being regularly released. Even _that_ is generous. In general, what is the length of viability for an attraction after it's source material fades from public perception? I think we have enough examples that we could come up with a formula for how long something will last at a theme park... :) "...with strange aeons even death may die..." ;)

It was an idea a little before its time. It would be pretty popular now I think. Though if they had done it right it would be pretty timeless. Love the days in Disney when they would make up rides that had little to do with a popular film.

The problem beingm can you find about half a million more people like you to ride the ride? And do this in the late 90s? Nobody knew what steampunk was back then. Steampunk really didnt take off until the late 2000s reaching into the early 2010's. Abney Park was one of the pioneers of steampunk music.

Don't forget that Tony had his own share of failures. The original Splash Mountain logs were too long and couldn't negotiate the curves in the flume and would bottom-out at the bottom of the drops. They all had to be scrapped and redesigned causing the opening of the attraction to be delayed several months.

You’re probably like me. I’ve got submechanophobia, the fear of large, man made or unnatural objects in or under water.

For some reason, I was much more freaked out by the mermaids who were gathered around the sea serpent? Underwater, they were truly haunting. Whereas the sea serpent was kind of par for a Disney ride? Also I remember the way the diver was pulling at the turtle with this rhythmic back-and-forth, back-and-forth. The movement was so unnatural and robotic! As the submarine sloooowly went past one of the other divers in his diving helmet, I suddenly thought to myself "That animatronic doesn't have a face under there," and it chilled me to my core. So ultimately, I think the fish and the humanoid characters were a lot more startling than the serpent, at least for me. Ugh, especially the fish. (Not surprisingly, I now have phobias of both fish and of animatronics. Thanks, Childhood!)

I think there are a great many things Walt wouldn't approve of in our modern world.

I'd love to see them resurrect the 20K ride. That ride is how I got interested in the book and the character of Captain Nemo. And it's one of the movies that put Disney live-action on the map. So I'd like to see them bring back the ride in the way Tokyo did--by not having the subs actually be underwater. That would solve a lot of maintenance problems and allow for more elaborate animatronics. (And I'd like to see the Grand Salon restaurant idea resurrected as well--with, of course, Captain Nemo himself playing the organ and singing to entertain the guests.) Maybe now with the good Captain playing a role in Once Upon A Time, we can get the ball rolling on projects like these.

"Boring" drop ride? How is that boring? Have you never felt the rush of adrenaline (and, in some cases, fear) from suddenly being dropped from a great height? : / I'd enjoy the Journey to the Center of the Earth either way if I could go to Disney Sea, but I don't understand what makes a drop ride "boring"...

Martin. I've been riding drop rides since 1984. They are a linear and predictable drop, not a coaster. they are all very similar are not exciting in this day and age.

I wonder if this person has been to Tokyo DisneySea, but I appreciate that they included this in the video. I was worried they wouldn't since they aren't defunct. Either way, I think Journey to the Center of the Earth is more interesting as is than if it was a drop ride. The ride itself is interesting and has parts of other rides, but is unique on its own. However I felt like the ride was a bit tame...just a bit. Like every time you thought it was going to go all out it would slow down. Still a fun ride though.

I was never on the original, but when I was there in 2012, I asked the "Journey into Imagination" gift shop attendant about the old ride, and she was a pretty old worker. She said "the original tracks are still under the parts of the ride, ie. part of the track is under the gift shop floor."

That was Dad's favorite ride at Disney for the longest time, and he was really bummed when it disappeared. It'd be nice to have a Defunctland about it to show others who never got to go on the ride.

There is nothing wrong with a little kitch. I was never happy with Eisner. I always thought Epcot was a huge waste of money. It was a sort of nothing burger.
