One day we should have a discussion on how Degrassi neglected their black characters. They could have done soo much with Tiny and Shay's storylines.

Maya was 100% right to tell Mr. Simpson about Tristan and Yates, but I feel like Tristan gets too much hate for his reaction. Tristan never really understood that he was being groomed, so it makes sense for him to be extremely upset and not handle the news well. Obviously, he shouldn't have lashed out at Maya like that, but once again, he was groomed, so it makes sense that his anger was misplaced.

It’s crazy how Craig was meant to be the first bisexual male character on the show but they trashed the idea. I think they knew it was ahead of its time. Then Peter was meant to be and they canned that. Then they finally graced us with Miles Hollingsworth. I think they did the right thing.

zig has the most bizarre glow up in the entire show

Maya has one of the most interesting character arcs of the whole series. I love the choices made for her reactions after Cam's death, as non-typical grief responses are so common yet so... stigmatized? Looked down on? Definitely not shown on TV very often?

I think Maya is definitely one of my favorite people in the entire Degrassi universe because her character arc is nuanced and believable-especially compared to the other Next Class characters. The way her struggles with mental health evolved through different experiences during her adolescence was depicted with so much care.

Maya was absolutely 100% right to tell Principal Simpson that one of his teachers was grooming and statutory r*p*ng a student. It is later revealed in the episode where Miles and Tristan first kiss that Mr. Yates had also attempted to assault other students (Winston says so). She saved other kids from being victimised by Yates, and Tristan from being further victimised as well. Maya is often perceived as "nosy" and "too much" by all the characters in-universe but this behaviour of helping people even when they don't want it is a clear symptom of dating someone who unalived himself - as you said, she tries desperately to save everyone from themselves from this point on (Miles, Zig, Tristan, etc) because she felt that she could have done more to save Cam. She and Miles are my two favourite characters of this generation of Degrassi, full stop; They are both complex and well-written, morally grey, and purely human characters - a writing strength on Degrassi that flourished in early TNG which, to be honest, was a bit lost in later seasons (in my opinion at least - unpopular opinion: it got better in Next Class than seasons 13 and 14, but never reached the same level).

I know they knew Cam's storyline from the very beginning and it was always going to end that way but it hurts me to this day. I adored him so so much. Eli being the one to find him has always been so perfect to me though because it so easily could've been him in that spot earlier on in the show.

I actually enjoyed Maya in the last two seasons of Next Class. It really showed how much the bus crash affected her, the good and bad. And I don't know, it kinda felt like she grew up a bit, too?

Your voice while saying 'Because a lot of people in Degrassi are in plays' I felt that...it's a lot.

Also, a lot of people hate Maya but I never understood why. I have the biggest soft spot for her. Nobody ever talks about how nasty Zoe was to her, how horrible of a friend Tristan was, how Cam's death affected her, and how Zig & Miles both were trash. 😭 I was just happy to see her finally gain some peace on the last season so everyone could stop messing with her.

Maya was 100% right for telling Simpson about Mr. Yates and Tristan. As someone who has been in a situation like that (not a teacher but an adult coworker while I was 15) I wish I had Maya as a friend back then. When you’re young and an adult is grooming you, a lot of times you don’t realize how bad it is until much later. Will forever love Maya for telling!!!!!

Ok while I do agree with where I stand that season 1-7 is the best, I honestly did forget how really intense these later seasons of degrassi were, great video as always!

Maya was completely in the right for reporting the relationship between Tristan and Mr Yates. It crosses every single line, and this relationship was a culmination of every insecurity Tristan had about himself and his ability to find love. This teacher has clearly done this before and knows how to manipulate younger students. In several '90s movies featuring a gay male teenage protagonist, he would have his first sexual encounter somewhere taboo like a street corner or with an adult with authority; however, this show was written in another time and could have had a lot more to say, like the trauma Tristan must have experienced after the fact. Nuance wasn't needed for the story, because Tristan wasn't operating pragmatically. On the other hand, Tristan's first sexual experiences do mirror a lot of gay teens', mine included

Sometimes I really feel like I’m the only person who really didn’t like zig😂 granted I only watched season 13 and 14 once and never rewatched them like I rewatch 10 11 12 and even next class

Maya was one of the best Degrassi characters in the whole series. Olivia Scriven did a great job portraying her

you are so real for this. The things you say, especially about Maya are things I’ve been waiting for other people to bring up instead of just saying “ugh I hate Maya”. Her reaction to Cam’s suicide was so honest to me, like TV shows and movies have this like immediate drama following a character death or just some sweet closure scene, like the emotions express themselves that easily. With Maya, the non-responsiveness is exactly how I was when someone close to me died. It makes her so relatable and the entire grieving process more authentic to my own experience with grief than most of what i see. She was so young too, and the writers do a good job of writing in the long term effects of cam’s death into her relationships and her own mental health.

i really wish cam got more story :( I wish he at least lasted a season. He was such a great character. I understand why they ended him that way and i am glad that the storyline happened, but i wish he was more than maya's boyfriend and maybe they did a bit more with him before they killed him. He remains one of my favorite characters in the show. Can't wait for the next video, I actually liked a lot of the final cast, even if they annoy me a bit.

Honestly Maya is my favorite and at first I really did think she was annoying but by the end I just grew to love her

Miles is the best character in this class his family sucked and always just brushed him off whenever he tried to explain his dad’s abusive behavior and other things he was going through.

I always knew Winston and Miles are really good friends even if it's offscreen but I never once realized that Lola in a Play is something both he and Miles have in common.

Half the characters from these classes honestly feel like someone condensed people I knew in school down to their core personality traits

31:34 Off the bat, absolutely Maya should have told Mr. Simpson about Tristan. Recently a docuseries about teacher student intimate relationships premiered on Hulu called “Keep It Between Us” and it shows how these teachers who may be “younger” have predatory and disgustingly s*xual behavior towards children and that’s what Mr. Yates did. While it was gradual, he still pretty early on invited Tristan to his personal home with intentions of s*xual acts to happen. Children/ minors cannot consent to adults because they aren’t yet aware of how predatory and inappropriate this behavior is but the adults always know how inappropriate it is to hold power over these children. I honestly would have been upset if Maya never said anything or if anyone didn’t say anything. I get Tristan is mad because he felt like he didn’t have anyone who liked him genuinely (unfortunately this happens often in the gay community) but this situation could have gotten so much worse if Maya didn’t intervene and he would have had trauma he would have had to deal with in his adult life. Like I know it’s just a show but this happens too often in real life and it is so unsettling. To be honest, grooming in media is often shown as aggressive or scary when in reality it’s people getting others to trust them over time, validating them, isolating them slowly by saying they’re the only ones who care or who sees the real them before they start their predatory behavior and start slowly guilt tripping their “prey” into inappropriate, non consensual acts with them. In short, Maya was absolutely correct for saying something.

Thanks, I haven't seen this version yet but I'm happy that you made these videos, right before new Degrassi comes, There is not enough videos/reaction or reviews of this franchise. I started watching it at the ending episodes of season 11. Saw degrassi Manhattan, loved spinner he became my all time male favorite character, while Manny was for females.

Love these videos, you put so much work into them! Cam and Maya were so cute together and they were probably my favourites from this class. I think Maya absolutely did the right thing by telling Simpson about Yates. He was a predator and she was protecting her friend. Tristan was an awful friend to her.

It's hard to choose a favourite there are so many good characters but I will say this I HATE Tristan(long rant ahead) he was the worst most horrible character Degraassi ever created. I blame the writers for not showing any growth with him. He is sassy and narcissistic from the get go he only really cares about him self and his needs. When he was introduced he tried with Bianca whom immediately shut him down. He was constantly jealous of Tori and Zig that he tried to break them apart. Then season 12 he pretended to be maya and catfished cam which was extremely creepy. He's constantly about finding his true love and falling in love but he shows little to no respect for his fellow human beings it's disgusting. The start of S13 he ditches maya for because he's on a fanboy high when he sees Zoey, Maya the same friend whose supported him and been there for him through thick an thin. If I were maya I would've dropped his ass so hard (to be honest I wouldn't even have been friends with him in the first place). Maya was right to talk to simpson but as much as I hate Tristan with all my power I understand his over reaction. Then there is his relationship with Miles who was clearly confused he wasn't sure if he was into guys or girls but Tristan took advantage of that because his feelings for Miles was much more important to him than helping miles figure him self out. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT when Miles lost his shit on Tristan during that intervention episode. Tristan deserved it 100%. Then when Tristan gave that sorry speech to miles about using people, OMG TRISTAN SIT YOUR ASS DOWN NOW! Tristan is the definition of a user he constantly uses his friends for his own benefit. I was so angry when they put miles with Tristan again. Miles deserved so much better than that worthless piece of trash. Miles and Maya should have been end game both of them are so good for each other especially Maya she is a great influence on miles.Tristan should have died on that bus crash it would have been the perfect ending for a worthless character. It's solely the writers fault they never cared to develop tristan outside of "Me me all a me and my love interests" . We briefly got to see his caring side but it was so brief the writers could have pulled a Holly J and have him grow into a better individual. Problem is after a certain point Degrassi only cared about introducing an endless amount of new characters versus developing the existing ones. Sorry for this long ass comment but I had to voice my extreme hate for tristan (it took everything out of me not to use swears LOL)

I just watched them graduate and I have to disagree with you and say that Maya was one of the best parts of Next Class 3 and 4. I didn’t really care for her until then. After seeing what they do with her arc, I say she is one of the best written characters in the whole show. And ZOE. What a transformation

omg i LOVED dark-ish maya in her last season, i found it much more entretaining than the bubbly happily ever after from other characters even when they're in touble because "everything will be alright". well maybe it won't how about that. i feel like that's what they tried with her, and even though her more promosing final scenes felt like a pretty natural development, i wish we had seen more of the side of her that was not afraid to be bleak
