Same with pretty much all makeup. What’s mostly visible is the color and technique and what matters is that it stays on your face/ has good formulation. That’s why I buy most of my makeup from the dollar store. I copy the techniques and use the same colors as influencers on Pinterest and it looks the same! also getting the same “aesthetic” with clothing using what I already have in my closet and styling it in a way that’s on trend. My straw purse was bought at goodwill a decade ago and I think it was a Walmart brand purse but has that same look that she’s talking about for “elevated beach bag”. I use it every year lol it never goes out of style

I really wish more people learned how to diy instead of shopping so much. "But it takes time and skilllllls" YEAH that's the point. Instead of mass buying random trends, you use your time to learn valuable crafts, which also means you pick more carefully what you're gonna diy and how. You also get the opportunity to work on your creativity instead of blindly copying influencers.

exactly! I am glad cosplay and costumes and sfx makeup are becoming more popular, not to even mention the instagram and TikTok designers gaining platforms. Clothes are an expression, they show who you are and people should be encouraged to gain the skills necessary to be competent at taking care of and making their own garments. I only do small mending right now, but I am saving up for a sewing machine from Facebook marketplace and I want to make my own jackets, bags and dresses. Also crochet and needlepoint are fun; really textiles in general are so fun and creative and at the end you get art you can wear and enjoy and feel proud of.

A lot of diy looks diy and garbage lol. That’s how you get the dollar store churners. I always giggle when I see garbage digs at the thrift. Then since they only spent a little money on it, they have no issue just purging and rebuying other junk.

I love the tiktok generation's trends because they are like a more fun version of shop your stash. Tomato girl gave new life to old reds from the back of my wardrobe. My sparkly glittery eyeshadows were too much of a hassle compared to my shadow stick, then boom, mermaidcore made them fun again. I never wore my cheesy middleschool good citizenship award dog tag (but never threw it out either lol), but the Y2K thing makes it seem so cool and authentic that I kinda wear it a lot now. If I don't already own the trend (zero hot pink for Barbiecore), though, it is clearly for someone else.

The way products/colors, etc. are renamed to get us to buy more is an interesting thing. Not only with the hair colors, but also with things like "lip glossy products". The term "lip oil" has really caught on lately and any of those I've tried would easily be called a lip gloss. Companies really are finding ways to make things that have been around for a long time seem new and exciting.

when you said summer only lasts 10 weeks that's actually a really helpful benchmark- like i'm bad with my sense of time so "summer" seems kind of nebulous. but 10 weeks!!! that's not that long !!!
@emilynordt153
@emilynordt153 Ай бұрын
Make sure you are evaluating the length based off of where you live as well. 10 weeks is a decent benchmark but not the exact number for everywhere. Canada and Northern US are going to have a shorter summer season than somewhere like Florida and Arizona.

I remember going shopping with my mom in stores and we would buy a few things at a time. Like we'd see a shirt that we liked and buy it. I got one of those charm bracelets (I think people now call them italian charm bracelets) 10 or 12 years ago and it’s one of my favorite bracelets, it’s flat and comfortable and very customizable. But I have to add that I didn’t get all my charms at once, I collected them over the years, some were gifted by family and friends, some I got while traveling so I think that plays a big part as well.

I know my biggest struggle with consumerism is my hair, which honestly sounds so silly as I type it. I have very curly hair and never grew up learning how to do my hair and also just feeling like my hair needed to be fixed sooo that’s to say advertisements for curly hair products always get me especially when they have a model who looks similar to be ( I’m biracial but grew up in a not quite diverse area) so this year I’m having to battle with myself about shopping to try to fit into a trend vs. shopping because I ran out of something. And also trying not to spend sooo much on hair appointments. It’s still a struggle so I’ve just been watching all the deinfluence videos I can to help me stay encouraged. Great video!

first: Love how I stumbled upon your channel! Second - I'm glad someone finally mentioned the hair colors being an endless "trend", it's expensive to get your hair done professionally- and with these trends you would want it done professionally to get it accurate to the "picture" you're showing. I'm at a point where I just know what colors look best on me - Browns- and I don't get anything else because 1) I know I'll get sick of it and 2)it's such a pretty penny to spend over something thats gonna end up "fizzling out" as a trend until the next hair color comes along for "the new season" its such a toxic cycle. I love how you talk about this stuff on your channel - more people need to hear this.
@shawnaripari
@shawnaripari Ай бұрын
definitely agree with your take here. It is super expensive to get done, and the cost alone is enough to get me to think about making any changes, especially things that are more trendy. You (or I) may enjoy it for a few months but when you're sick of it, it's going to cost quite a bit to do something different.

The saddest thing is that you’d use those short term items, like something core or aesthetic only for couple weeks and then leave them on the back of your closet. So, usually people keep that in mind and therefore prefer to buy cheaper things from companies with very shady reputation, who may use unsustainable practices, using child labor and so on. And in the end, people have less motivation to find things a new home, resell or recycle them because they were so cheap it’s easier to throw away. I also notice those urge to find items cheaper if I don’t know if they suit me or if I’ll be using them. In that case I try to find something alike second-handed, because I feel like at least it already has served it’s purpose and I’m also helping someone to get rid of stuff they don’t need. Though I know the most sustainable way would be not to buy anything at all, just rarely works for me to overcome that unbearable urge of consuming

I follow trends to the extent that they already fit in with my existing style. If that makes sense. My own style is a bit ecclectic and ranges from either a boho vibe to pretty simple, classic cuts and styles. So 'today'- the 'cottage core' and what are they calling it... quiet luxury? FIT IN with what I ALREADY WEAR. so... its great! Especially with the 'cottage core' type stuff there's a lot more stuff and variety now, which is fun. And I will continue to wear it long after its out of 'style'.

I’ve had an SPF sun hat on my wishlist for the past couple of years. While I know that the idea is sound for the sun protection alone, my issue is… I have a hard time wearing hats! The only hat I wear semi-regularly is baseball caps when my hair is super dirty or, on occasion, to style for a more sporty fit. Honestly I still grapple with this one, but so far, still haven’t pulled the trigger

Bought one. Didn't wear it 😢 Baseball caps would be good to keep sun off your face though? :)

@@ClayScarlett yes! And then I always say to myself, Well, maybe it’s because it wasn’t the RIGHT hat and that’s why I don’t wear it? 🙄 I consider it progress that I can recognize the mental gymnastics and just continue to delay buying the thing. I’m sure caps are better than nothing, but I took my kid to a derm to ask about sun protection, and they specifically recommended wide brim hats and not baseball caps. Probably because it doesn’t go all the way around your head. But still, I’m pretty sure that if I don’t wear the hat, that would equal 0 SPF 😅

At the same time I think that there are also other types of chunky sandals that go in and out of popularity every few years? Or perhaps, like you've said that certain styles find new audiences

I have some thoughts about the core fashion trends. I think that it is important to look at core fashion trends that have substance behind them. For instance, dark academia, and cottage core both have lifestyles behind the fashion movement. And intern, I believe that they have staying power because all of the trend genres that have came before that seem to work the same way. The hippie movement was way of dressing, but also was because of a bigger topic. So I guess my point is that some, I predict, will really have staying power.

It is big enough to hold sandals, bathing suits, and sunscreen, which is all I need it to fit since we can carry our towels. The only things we end up buying most summers are sandals and maybe active clothes (which includes a swim suit for me), because we use them enough to wear them out. I don't like having too many options when I get dressed in the morning, so why would I buy more shorts or mini skirts or sun dresses when I already have just the right amount of clothes I enjoy? I will say, check your expiration date for sunscreens. I can't tell you how many times I thought I was covered for sunscreen and ended up getting burned because the sunscreen I used was expired!

the sunscreen expiration reminder is a good one! I got burned last year because of this as well

By law it should still be at 90+ percent potency even if expired? Other drugs work that way.

@hcf4kd1992 sunscreen is already a difficult one to formulate as it is, even before accounting for user error. And the amount of SPF written on the label is only if you use it perfectly before it expires. I got myself burned yesterday because I used sunscreen (in the proper amount, used as correctly as humanly possible, because I tend to be a little obsessive about such things) that was less than a month past the marked expiration date. And I was also wearing a hat, and my nose still got burned! If it was still 90 percent effective, I don't think that 25 minute jog in part shade would have burned me. But I am not a cosmetic chemist, I don't know all the laws surrounding all that.

I do think that some of these micro trends make sense if, say, you have always been wild about western wear and now it is having a moment. Go out and stock up on stuff that will make you happy long-term, if that's you. Me? I actually think the asociation with coyboy stuff is the one thing that might stop me buying something that might otherwise look like like cute farm-style vintage. I'm not a huge fan of most mainstream country music and the political implications of glorifying cowboy stuff feel like they might be some form of wingnut conservative stuff that I can't endorse. Something really artisanal might work with what else I've got, but the folks who make that have deep roots in their art styles and folk traditions and their work is to be used for life. They may be riding the trend, but you'd still want that stuff after it's supposedly "out" and they'll still be there making it.

this does make sense if something IS your style and items are hard to come by. For a few summers I wore a cowgirl hat and ran that thing into the ground. I could not find a replacement at the time so teenage me would love this trend rn 😅

Yeah, I’m in Canada on the prairies. Need three distinct levels of clothing, for me I wear a lot of dresses so I need short sleeve or sleeveless in summer, long sleeve but not thick for spring/fall, and sweater for winter! Haha.

So you’re not wrong that we don’t need to buy new clothes every season but i will say, (this is definitely not the target demographic for these videos btw) but for me i have to buy new summer clothes a Lot because i just gain weight during the winter time and im gaining weight a lot due to medical reasons. And rn im trying to get the weight off meaning im going to have to buy MORE clothes. Granted, i shop secondhand for most of my stuff. I only buy pants firsthand because i can’t try on pants in the thrift store. But for the most part i think that it’s such a hard thing to decide if you need new clothes or not

Western-inspired style has/will never go out of fashion.... IF you live in Texas. If you don't know how to jump a barbed wire fence or ride a horse, whaaaat's up? Love this video BTW

Also yeah, you only wear cowboy boots in the summer if you're riding a horse lmao. The heels keep you in the stirrups, the jeans keep the dust/dirt/gravel/twigs off your legs and out of your boots.

In most Texas cities you can go to a fancy event in cowboy boots if you really want, ESPECIALLY DFW. Tuck them into your jeans (boot cut, no holes), wear a nice belt and a button-down. Texas semi-formal.

I grew up and live in Houston and people in the city very much wear cowboy boots in the hot, sweaty weather. It’s the opposite of Canada here…in Texas winter is 10 weeks (if you can call random cold fronts a winter) so the cowboy boots are out at all times, lol

I've worn the same clothes for 15 years. The only new things I've bought are my undergarments. I've never cared about trends nor had the extra funds to "fit in" It's made life genuine. Poeple like me for me amd not what I have. I've never understood buying things just to have them. If it doesn't serve a use, why have it? Why go into debt trying to impress strangers. Maybe its the Gen X in me, but I have never cared what others think as they dont feed me., F me or pay my bills.

I live at the beach. A good beach bag is a wonderful thing. But these straw, raffia, loose-woven etc. are total sand magnets! They will trap and hold all sand nearby and it’s almost impossible to get the sand out. They may look good, but they’re a huge PITA. The smoother, more tightly woven the material, the better. OTOH, gotta say, cowboy boots with summery dresses has been popular summer wear in Texas for at least 40 years. What’s amusing/silly is seeing people in certain big cities, far away from any vestige of “western” life, adopting these new clothes just because of a certain singer’s recent hit.

Not me sitting her in my comfy, blue and white spotted cropped pyjama bottoms, seriously wondering if I'd have the nerve to wear them out 😅 Edit: this is NOT because I've been influenced by the trend, but because I could happily live in my pyjamas. Any excuse to wear them is fine by me and this has made me realise that if pj's don't look obviously like pj's it could be possible to wear them as day wear 😊
